ILE 4/8 trackers

I've never done anything like this before. But who else would be interested in doing a mail project? I.E.: Putting a track down and mailing it to someone who can put a 2nd track down and so-on so we'll have some ILE virtual bands?

Like, I could post that I have a tape with a song or two, one guitar track only. THen whoever asked for it first would get it in the mail to add whatever they wished. We could have lots of different posters starting different tapes and then sending them to one person in the end to mix down and put on the computer.

I know, I'm talking crazy shit. I blame it on the coffee.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i got an 8 track, yo, and i'm not afraid to use it.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

My live-in bf is a poster too and he has an 8-track. So if someone sent something to our house we'd get 2 tracks down. BOO-YA!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I found my 4-track yesterday after looking for it for 3 years! whoot!

(still shit at the guitar, voice, bass etc. though :/)

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I would be into this.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Would we have any method to this madness?

Perhaps, whoever wants to could start one and then post when it's ready or simply email someone else on the list and ask if they'd like it next...?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm interested but i don't have a 4 track. We could do it digitally though by sending wavs/MP3s to each other?

dog latin, Friday, 31 January 2003 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone who knows the answer to dog latin's question to thread!

I suppose if someone sent me a wave file, I could put in on 8-track... But personally I don't have a computer program that allows multiple tracks. We have Cool Edit on the Computer but this version only has one track (well, two if you count stereo). Maybe I should just see how much it would be to buy a newer version...

What do you use, dog latin?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

my 8 track is a digital thingy, so that be fine for me.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I will dance.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be like Bez from the Mondays. The dancer with Maraca's. Can I have this job. The official ILX dancer?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i suppose that means we need someone to point and someone to laugh, then.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone here like to make music videos? We could go all the way with this.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Then Dang remixes it all at the end into "ILX Song (Do Not Perv If You Lust Us Filthmix 2.0)"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

You can send each track as a wav and import them into whichever recording solution (digital or analogue) you desire.

Sarah, you could download Pro Tools free which allows 8 track if you desire.

Ed (dali), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

i spent most of 1998-1999 slaving in front of a warm four track and have a safeway bag full of master cassettes to show for it. i occasionally produce demos for bands on a 4-track and the sound isn't that bad really.

i tried to start a project like this back in the day but it didn't work because we were all across town. if people do a project like this they *ALL* have to be committed and can't be at all bad about sending the tape around.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Awesome.
and then in the end someone could do cover art.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

you could download Pro Tools free
Off of their site? Or where?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Kazaa.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

those wav files are gonna be huge. i'd think you'd want to encode to mp3. unless you were mailing cd's with the wav's. i think the computer idea is better, cuz i see it as problematic if people had different types of analog tape recorders.

pro tools free on the digidesign site, works on win98 only, i'm pretty sure. i know hanley said he uses it, you could ask him abt it.

ron (ron), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It'd be better to do it digitally, and with the BPM kept consistently marked.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, there is a free pro tools for mac too, i just looked. i bet it is for os9 only, as the osx version of protools is not out yet

ron (ron), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Off their site It works on WinMe and MacOS 8.6 and 9.x too.

Ed (dali), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I will do it if we stick to tapes (4track/8track). Maybe we need two different projects to decide the ultimate format, analog vs. digital.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatchoo need? I'll drop some accordion, melodica, theremin, banjo, white-boy flows, fakey qawwali singin', cartoon samples, Speak-N-Spell, Hit Stix, whatevah you need I got it mang!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I will do it if we stick to tapes (4track/8track)

err, mine uses zipdisks :/

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Nickalicious needs to contribute that ineffable x factor of flava.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

and a loop of someone saying "yo"

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a song on a 4-track tape in the "archives" (shoe-boxes on the top shelf of my music-room closet) that I did entirely with a keyboard sampler and a sample of my friend saying "yo"...it's called "Fugue in Yo Minor". It really is as stupid as it sounds. :D

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

If you email someone that you have something ready, you can discuss the format you have it in. Maybe the next person at least knows someone with that equiptment that they could access. If not, they could say so and you'd email someone else on the list.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

it's called "Fugue in Yo Minor"

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Nickalicious IS a weapon of mass destruction. Well done. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I photoshop cover art using all contributers faces? And put them on pictures of old swedish bands.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

this is what ADAT is for. i don't have one though

ron (ron), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Count me in.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 31 January 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I will collaborate on 4-track songs.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

and send me your master tapes and I'll make nice analogue CD versions.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I aim to please, Ned. :D

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose if someone sent me a wave file, I could put in on 8-track...

yes, that's what i meant. If we send the files on it's easier and we get to use the intraweb too.

What do you use, dog latin?
Till recently i used impulse tracker but it doesn't work on my new computer so i have to learn a new program.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

what i mean is

- someone makes a track on 4track and sends it on
- that person records it onto their computer/dictaphone/woteva and then sends that on
- the next person records it on their 4track.

on paper, it works.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Makes sense to me.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I retire from this. However, if the finished product would benefit from a belted "I want to break free" rendition, give me a shout!

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Why retire, Mark C? You can still 4-track and send your tape to someone else with a 4/8track or 4/8track AND computer capabilities or whatever...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

how about 4-track people send to 4 track people

digital people send to digital people

8 track to 8 track.

Then someone remixes the three songs =

A six song EP.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

jel is management material!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

each tape should include a 440 hZ test tone (or something) at the least-in to calibrate 4-tracks that run at different speeds (and they all do).

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

ive got a 4track and guitar/synth*ambient yo drones to add to the mix

, Friday, 31 January 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd do this. Actually, I have done this and it's fun.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 31 January 2003 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone play drums or drum machine and want to start some tapes with drum tracks and start sending them out?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 3 February 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

CRAP! I totally broke my 4-track this weekend. :(

I should have learned long ago that it goes record-on-4-track-then-drink-hella-Jaegermeister, not the other way around.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
Has anyone been working on this? I'm borrowing my friend's 4-track, so now I have a 4- and 8-track to play with for a while. I might even record myself playing drums for a change of pace...

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 9 May 2003 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I resurrected my 4-track long enough to smite it dead, and am now (im)patiently awaiting the arrival of my IRS refund check with which I shall be purchasing computer + recording software, so right now maybe not good time.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 May 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

How did I miss this thread the first time around...? Better go and read it some more...

(I'm on the 4-tracking cassette tape trip...)

kate, Friday, 9 May 2003 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd be up for doing digital. I'm going to buy the ProTools Mbox very soon.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 May 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

hey i gotta fourtrack, can i be in on this? i wonder if duane would be into doing drum tracks on something....

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 10 May 2003 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm recording some 4 track stuff this weekend. my first foray into drumming as well (me = pretending to be mimi from low)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 10 May 2003 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

when i saw them a couple summers ago, she had a whole big drum kit, which made her look like neil peart compared to what i was expecting (inside artwork of curtain hits the cast)

ron (ron), Saturday, 10 May 2003 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i use ddclip. its freeware. i'd be into this. but with so many contributors its likely to be pretty messy.

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 10 May 2003 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

cool I got a Tascam but do all these machines play at the same speed

dave q, Saturday, 10 May 2003 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, I just found my old 4-track (also Tascam, bless 'em). It made me feel quite nostalgic.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 11 May 2003 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

tascam owns dunedin.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 11 May 2003 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Tascam portastudio 414mkII.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 11 May 2003 08:30 (twenty-three years ago)

But, I don't record much at all these days :(

I could try and do something for this, but it'd probably take me ages.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 11 May 2003 08:31 (twenty-three years ago)

with so many contributors its likely to be pretty messy
I don't know what you thought, but I wasn't thinking that EVERYONE would contribute to every tape... Just that several different people could start up tapes and pass them on. Some songs might only have 2 ILXors on them, or 4 or whatever.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
I just found this thread by trying out the "random" link. Did anything ever come of this?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

Excelsior the album

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Aw, look how enthusiastic I was about this. My 8-track is broken now.

teh_kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

lol wp

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

My 4-track gathers dust :(

Though, I do plan to record "This Is How We're Living Now" really soon! It's gonna be great!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I've touched my 4-track since getting Cubase.

Oh, the times we had together. But no more...

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

I bought old school tapes last year in anticipation of recording. The good old days of recording the same vocal part 3 times in different styles, with the timing being slightly out. *sigh*
