Svalbard!

It has polar bears, arctic foxes and some people. It belongs to Norway, apparently. And up till a few days when we were looking at a map I had no idea it even existed! Am I stupid? Are there other mystery countries lurking around?

I had no idea that it existed until I read it in Philip Pullman's first Dark Materials book, and then mentioned to a friend that it would be a brilliant idea. They looked at me as if I was a fool, which is fair enough, as I am.

I think I've been sucked in by the MERCATOR PROJECTION which turns the globe into a flat map... on that it was really pretty big, same size as Iceland or so I think, on my inflatable globe it's miniscule. Damn you Mercator!

Well, it's not that minuscule -- about twice the size of Belgium, in fact.

I had no idea...

It's real? Cool, shall we go?

This came on randomly when I was out running, talk on Svalbard. Obviously starting to be in the new s a lot more now since last February.

Interestingly I hadn't realized one of the two main cables into Svalbard was cut in January 2022. Also missed that another cable in the Baltic off the coast of Finland was cut this or last week
