What is the virtue of a perfectly constructed thread?

In response to the "Typo Champion" thread, this is the thread in which all participants use only complete, grammatically correct sentences, with flawless spelling (including capitalization) and typography.

Is it worth the effort, do you think, to present oneself in this way?

r u gay?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

N.! I thought you'd never ask!

(This thread, you see, is just a ploy to attract my ILX crush objects, all of whom have impeccable text styling. Apparently it's working.)

"impeccable" is apparently a continuum after all

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to try this out, but I fear I will fall foul of some sort of grammatical or typing error. I have a new thread to start, so I bid you farewell.

Don't be afraid to join our fun! You know who you are.

Please note that I did not stipulate posts must be well-reasoned.

I believe that my posts are almost always grammatically and structurally sound and rarely contain spelling errors. My job involves proofing and editing, so maybe that explains it.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I find the process of consciously creating grammatically and structurally sound paragraphs, much less sentences, to be an intimidating challenge. However, I do believe that it is essential, as human beings, that we work to overcome all challenges and as a result evolve into a stronger and more literate society. Therefore, I have chosen to set as my goal, for this evening, the following: All of the posts that I submit to the various threads on this bulletin board, during the next twenty-four-hour (24-hour) period, shall consist of grammatically correct and structurally sound sentences and paragraphs. As a disclaimer, though, I hasten to caution all readers that my spelling skills are lacking these days, as is my ability to proofread; lacking these abilities, I ask that you take pity on my writing and not significantly criticise said postings.

I will bravely post to this thread, although my dependence on parethetical phrases and gratuitous use of the em dash keep me from attaining grammatical perfection on a daily basis. So yes, I do think it's worth the effort to present oneself online in the same manner as one would in person: in the best light possible.

Jen (nstop), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I can do this, but I must be brief.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that content is more important than presentation; it's a shame that my posts fall down on both counts.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoy challenges such as this and approach them with much brio and verve. My tolerance threshold for the oft-made misspelling or grammar gaffe is quite low, although I am guilty, on occasion, of that which I'm most harshly critical.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I fear I am guilty of double standards. My spelling and grammar have become sub-standard of late, yet I am quick to notice these shortcomings in the posts of others.

smee (smee), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Wondrous, grandiose, even breathtaking -- these are words I would not use to describe my posts. However, you may feel free to do so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody, you missed an of (needed for "critical" as well as "guilty"). Tsk, tsk.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Apologies for the shorthand I employed in my previous message. Jody, the final sentence in your last post is missing a preposition. To complete the implied clause "that which I'm most harshly critical of," you would need to add an "of" between the words "that" and "which."

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I constitute my office's spelling and grammar police. However, although my grammar and spelling may be better than most, they are still, in the main, pretty fucking awful. Please feel free to criticise this post (as you undoubtedly will), otherwise I will never improve.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Although it is a colloquialism, perhaps the modifier "fucking" more properly should be "fuckingly," because the former modifies the adjective "awful."

(I think your writing is fine.)

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"Fuckingly" is so Edwardian.
