A new job with less pay (sorta)C/D?

So, I went for an interview yesterday and today I've been offered the job. Only problem is they are offering me the same as I get just now, minus the performance related pay. They've said they'll review after 3 months but that's 3 months of skintness and the possibility that I don't get a pay rise.
I hate this place, I'm desperate to get out and use my brain and it's a management position.
I have a second interview next week, for a job I like the sound of much better, but I'm not sure if the salary would be any better there. I’m all confuddled. Help.

If it's a better job, that you'd enjoy more. Just take it.

If its a better job take it. What you don't make in money will be made up in not wanting to strangle everybody.

It does seem like a really good job, prestigious company and all that. The fact that it has Manager in the title wont hurt my CV either but with boyfy on the dole, it's a tough one....I know he'll tell me to go for it but..oh this hurtz my brane!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Unless it'll bankrupt you, take it. It is boyfy's job to find work for himself and start bringing in the readies. I accept he might not find it as easy as some, but don't think that immediately puts the onus on you to earn for both of you.

Happiness in your job is worth a hell of a lot more than slightly more cash.

today i've applied for a job which is a mjaor pay decrease compared to my last one - but its only three month attachment anyway, but its more likely to lead to better things than my previous job so its worth it i reckon

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Go for it, smee!

Thanx. I've spoken to my mum (all seeing all knowing parent) and she's says I'm mental if I don't go for it, I think I might but I wanna speak to the boyf, give him his place and that. I know he'll support me and tell me to go for it, he's good that way, we just need to do some sums and work out if we could afford to live!
This is weird, I feel so responsible and grown up....

smee (smee), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations on the job offer! Is there any chance that if you played one employer against the other you could get at least what you're presently getting?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I doubt it, they have said they'll review in 3 months and I reckon that's their best offer. My wee agency woman is like a pitbull, if she can't get more money outta them, nobody can! I've a feeling they think I'm at it, coz I told them a bottom line and then went - oh, I forgot to mention that my benefits add another couple of grand on there...

smee (smee), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

All I've done since 1998 is take jobs with progressively lower pay.

That's usually how it goes for male prostitutes, what did you expect?

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I did it, I actually negotiated a higher salary - they are gonna match what I'm on just now and review in 3 months!!!And I get a Christmas bonus (if I last that long!). They must really want me, it's so flattering - I have a lot to prove now though - no more ILX for me in a few weeks time.

smee (smee), Thursday, 13 February 2003 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Well done, Smee!

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 13 February 2003 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you, I'm all excited - want to tell the world and I can't until I have it in writing!!! I'm so happy yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
*runs around room waving arms frantically*

Congratulations! That's wonderful!

I'm jealous! Good job! I need a raise badly and am yet to ask for it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I quit my full-time, decent-ish salary job that I hated last May and ended up taking a part-time admin job while I train as an unpaid advice worker on the side. Because of the reduced taxation I'm more like 1/3 worse off than 1/2. It's hard being on such a tight budget, but I know that it will lead to a satisfying career in advice once I'm ready.

But more than anything, the change to my stress levels has been amazing. I lost 10 lbs (used to stress snack at the old job) got back into music and my social life and I'm way less cranky. Bliss!

Sounds like you've negotiated a good deal Smee - there's never anything wrong with asking for a slightly better offer when you have good reason to do so. Hope it goes well.

elisabeth k, Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

elisabeth, Glad to have someone on ILX who is becoming an advice worker!

smee, If I were in your situation, I would skip around and sing I've got 5000 dollars! I've got 5000 dollars!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Nearly right Sarah I've been singing "Got a job, nana na na nana nana na na" in my head all day. I want to go and say to them all "hah, stick your job and your tabloid reading-can't think for yourself-believe everything you read-attitude right up your...." etc etc but I mustn't burn my bridges, references and all that!
Got a job nana na na nana nana na na repeat to fade....

smee (smee), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats, Smee! Hope you enjoy the new job hugely!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 13 February 2003 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah, this is grand! :-) Yay Smee!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 February 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah, are you an advice worker too? Just took my first supervised call the other day... a bit scary but it felt good. I've just got two more supervised ones to get through and then I go solo.

elisabeth k, Friday, 14 February 2003 10:03 (twenty-three years ago)

elisabth k,
Nope, I'm not an advice worker. I just think it's funny because ILX is often all about random people giving each other advice. And now we'll have a pro! I've done a lot of customer service stuff though, & I've got good people skills (if I do say so myself). I'm a real estate assistant currently.
Plus, my mom has her PhD in Psychology.
