well i predicted 1-0 to Australia but now England are 2-0 down - is this an Upton Park jinx or are the Aussies really as good as they were at the last Confederations Cup thing (where they beat Brazil and france, but lost to Korea and Japan)? they're lookin as good as the States at the World Cup if not better

Ireland are 2-0 against Scotland, Wales are struggling to beat Bosnia...

btw, anyone else find it weird that you can't refer to Serbia-Montenegro as Yugoslavia anymore?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

you can't refer to Serbia-Montenegro as Yugoslavia anymore?

well obv you can but the official name change has taken place - and it means they can't beat Azerbaijan anymore - lawks a lordy

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

OPPS! I don't think Australia were supposed to win, that's what you get when you pick a C team.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

It was hardly a C team in the first half, jel.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, that's true, all the substitution info obscured my opinion.

let's hope that Cudicini does apply for British nationality. There is a derth of goalkeepers.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not bothered, its not really any worse than 2-0 defeat to Holland about 18 months ago....i do resent the way the league club chairmen are getting their way thus rendering friendly matches virtually redundant though...and the other annoying thing was some of the England players (dont know who the fuck they were so can't name them) were basically just laughing and shrugging at the interviewer's equally inane 'cuh we can't seem to beat Australia at anything can we?' pun - another example of the loser mentality that engulfs this country I say - buck your ideas up by the Turkey match for chrissakes

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

friendly or not, substitution-madness or not, it's a great shot in the arm for long-suffering australian soccer fans like me. this team's capable of anything and the result's not completely unsurprising for a lot of us here, especially considering six of our starting eleven are premier league regulars. and to think it's their first game together in 14 months!

angelo (angelo), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

ireland were quite impressive in their 2-0 win over scotland. even players who are having a rough time at their clubs like breen, kilbane and harte were good. and clinton morrison was outstanding. i'm liking kerr already, things r looking up...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

just back from the pub watching scotland v republic of ireland. turning over to the england game got the biggest cheer of the night...

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

the 'poor old' French got turned over by the Czechs too, and the Swedes lost in Tunisia - business as usual everywhere else tho really

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 01:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there any sport that Australians are rubbish at? I was discussing this with a friend and we came up with snooker (Quintin Hann) and Boxing (Joe Bugner). And that's it. Bastards.

I like the fact that the only ref. to Yugoslavia now is in FYROM. Which should should change it's name to FYRFYOM.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 13 February 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah well that is greece's fault

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 13 February 2003 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah the ireland match was reasonably encouraging-i never want to see kilbane in an ireland shirt again, but he did score,so i suppose i can't complain...
we need a left back though, ian harte doesn't really cut the mustard...
good to see o shea starting, dunno why breen was picked ahead of o brien though
fair balls to kerr though-the team played with a conviction that we haven't seen in ages, and that was without some key players...
end of the second half was a bit dodgy though...

robin (robin), Thursday, 13 February 2003 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

they're pretty crap at darts, that bloke who won the "other" world title a couple of years back has been crap ever since and was before.

The only thing about last night that annoyed me (apart from the Aussie singing which made it sound like we were back in the fifties or something)was that we *should* have won that game, Kewell apart they weren't anything special, but still we can't beat them.

One player for England came out of that with any credit really and that's Jenas, he was superb.

chris (chris), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Jenas - OTM. If there's one advantage of playing a whole new team, it means that debutants* aren't under as much pressure as they would be if they were one debutants amongst established internationals; the young guns played with far less fear and more verve I thought - a bit like watching an under 21 international weher we look as good technically and as intelligently playing wise as continental opponents.

Tony David is good though - even the PDC scabs admit it. He was looking good but just didn't get into his game in the quarters. But then only Barney and Bristow have ever retained the Embassy.

* This gives me an image of various young laydeez from Swiss finishing schools playing for England in ball gowns. Insert punchline as appropriate.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i suggest:

woodgate 1st choice before campbell
scholes no longer in central midfield?

zemko (bob), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

and robinson's fine as keeper

zemko (bob), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

also why no gareth barry?

zemko (bob), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Ugo Ehiogu - why does he not get more caps? Southgate and him are the best defensive partnership IMO.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

well he's at least as good as campbell anyway, and seems to have a better brain on him. considering their careers together it'shard to see why it didn't work out for ehiogu. i'd also rather john terry than campbell

zemko (bob), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Campbell looked awful, even Rio had a stinker, and he's been pretty solid for the last few years.

Neville though, jesus, after that stinker and the way Mills palyed, thre's a chance he won't get back in (a small one admittedly)

chris (chris), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"i never want to see kilbane in an ireland shirt again, but he did score,so i suppose i can't complain..."

Never fear, when duff returns i think kerr intends to put him back on the left wing. Ironically, kilbane could be dropped after his first good ireland performance in ages. i'd pick breen ahead of o'brien too, to be honest. he was so good in the world cup that i'd be keen to stick with him. as for left backs, finnan might fill in there when he's back from injury. o'shea has done well there for man utd, too, so maybe he could play there.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Neville's great advantage is his ongoing working relationship with Beckham: and Beckham's total lack of pace means he ends up relying on the right back overlapping.

There aren't nearly enough hard players in / near the side at the moment.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

scholes no longer in central midfield?

Definitely. The form he's in at the moment playing in a more advanced role he should be a shoe-in ahead of, say, Heskey or Vassell. Then you've got loads more options in midfield: play Beckham on the right or in the centre; play Butt AND Gerrard; try someone else like Hargreaves or Jenas without having to drop an 'automatic' first choice player etc.

Having said that, I'm strongly in favour of picking less United players for England. Save them for the important stuff. Particularly when they're not appreciated (the Nevilles, Beckham before Greece, Butt before the World Cup etc).

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i predict

Liechtenstein 0-1 England
England 0-0 Turkey

ho hum indeed

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

hey you dicks this is the official international friendly thread

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

Be nice. Australia have won in Germany.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

Taking us back to where this thread began.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

International football Macca: "All over in Amsterdam as the Dutch secure a 5-3 win over Hungary, who have better memories of that scoreline"

Is this a worse-than-usual attempt to crowbar in an England reference, or was there an actual 5-3 that I don't know about?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

crowbar

Ireland uruguay a surprisingly dull 2-3

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

I watched the last ten minutes of England Ghana.

I lolled.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 04:28 (fifteen years ago)

good to see the socceroos coming up and beating much fancied opposition when it matters yet again
