Cambridge UK: Budget Accommodation Search

Can anyone help me find a reasonably priced place to stay in Cambridge, please? I have looked on the Internet, but they all seem quite pricey, although the words 'full English breakfast' are very appealing.

So, you know, B&Bs, hostels, short-term flats, that kind of thing.

Any help much appreciated. This is part of my ongoing job quest.

Try this website http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/cambridg.html There are quite a few cheapie b&bs on Newmarket road which are fine & serve their purpose well. Most accomodation in cambridge is quite expensive tho. There is a moderately priced place next to train station imaginately titled 'sleeperz' which is ok too. Also have a look at http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk for local accomodation. Any more help u need, just shout as I live in Cambridge.

You could stay at ours for free. (Possibly) good thing.

You would have to get a car & commute every day (about an hour's journey each way.) (Almost certainly) bad thing.

I'll have a word with my mate Alex. he's just moved there and he had to do a similar thing.

Ah, I shall arsk abt...

A friend recommends the cambridge accomodation noticeboard...

He also sa:

"When I didn't live here, but was visiting people, I used to go to the one by the 24hour garage, at the top of the hill on Huntingdon Road, which was okay for a weekend or whatnot, a bit trashy but near a 24/7 supply of jaffa cakes/mint aeros etc. More 31337 Cambridge people might actually know it's name, :).

Longer-term housing is pricey, unless you live in London or Tokyo, people from those parts say it's very cheap. Renting works out at about L500 + (L100 if you want a house rather than a flat) + (L100 per bedroom) a month."

Thank you all very much, even though you've probably all gone home and won't see this until Monday by which time it will have fallen off the bottom of the worldxor.

Pinkpanther, I may well give you a shout at some point.

Mooro, you are very kind. I can't drive, but I would like to come and see you anyway at some point. More later.

Sarah, you have the loveliest friends. Jaffa Cakes, mmmm. Yes, longer term accommodation is a bit steep, but so is everywhere else I've been looking. Except Nottingham. Everyone has the same accent as me in Nottingham, more or less. Is that a good thing?

Chris, I look forward to hearing from Alex.

I told you ilxor was good. I half-expected to come back home to an unanswered question.

You could try the YMCA. Both times that I've been in Cambridge (choir tours in college) we've stayed there; very convenient to town and (I assume) pretty cheap.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 February 2003 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, Dan, I'll check it out. Your YMCA reminisences came up when I searched the ILE for Cambridge earlier on...

This is just to get the thread back in view for my thankees' benefit. I hit Merrie England a week today.

Cor! Come for a beer.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 17 February 2003 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes PJM if you get near London give us a shout. You know there's a queue of people here who'd love to buy you beer.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 17 February 2003 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, this is very true

chris (chris), Monday, 17 February 2003 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

and I'm off work next Monday.

chris (chris), Monday, 17 February 2003 10:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Evening time pints too please unless lunchtime pints are round Victoria way!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 17 February 2003 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey PJM another geezer sez this:

"The cheapest way, apart from staying with someone you know, is to phone up a college and ask if they have a guest room free. They often have lots of rooms free if it is out of term. They used to charge a tenner a night at St Catharines but it might have gone up by now."

Sarah (starry), Monday, 17 February 2003 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Keep away from a place called 'Sleepers' which is an over-designed
but really unpleasant place right next to the train station.
Cheap but unpleasant. B&B's get cheaper South (?) side of the
tracks - i.e. away from the colleages.

logjaman, Monday, 17 February 2003 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, listen to Sarah - especially as St Catherine's, last I was there*, had a table football game that you didn't need to put money into.

*1978, admittedly...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 17 February 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr Miller, is your e-mail up the spout? my messages are bouncing back.

chris (chris), Monday, 17 February 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't use that one, Chris, it's just for TATU stuff. Try [email protected]

If all goes according to plan, I'll be able to service the pint queue a bit more easily. I don't think I'll be going to London this time round, and I'm a bit wary of making plans after the last attempt. But cheers and everything, I appreciate it.
