when you write on ilx, who are you really writing to?

minna (minna), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

God.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

All the people at school who never thought I had anything worth saying. Them. I'm heading for a fall, aren't I...

Archel (Archel), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

This has me stumped.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco usually.

Graham (graham), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

To all the girls I've loved before.

Seriously though, first me and then all of you. Deffo not the googlers.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

What Dave B said.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

who is 'all of you'?
are you ever surprised by the people who respond to your comments? ie. 'i didn't think s/he would read my thread/would know that about me (even tho i posted it for 'all' to see here on ilx)'
(obviously yes, i have experienced this kind of surprise, am i the only one?)

minna (minna), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Ilxora, the bitch goddess.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Minna - never had that, so can't say.

As regards 'all of you' - I have various people who I know who read this (ie, other ILXers), others I don't know but feel like I have some knowledge of them, and then there's the amorphous mass of lurkers who are unknown and unknowable, so i kind of assume they're just there in a vague sort of way, like gravity.

Even so, I don't write to please everyone, as it were; for example, when I post on football, I'm writing for those people I know like football and can engage/understand/like/disagree as appropriate. For those niche threads, I'm not too concerned what others might think in response as they're part of the gravity type people I mention above.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

partly myself, partly Rener, and partly the great mass of ILXOR readers.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

and intelligent, liberal reader with a sharp wit who is deeply hostile to me and my opinions.

g.cannon (gcannon), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

anybody who will listen to me i s'pose

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Harry Dean Stanton

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Friends on the one hand, people whose opinions i respect on the other. The former are mostly the 'pub mafia' UK posters with some US people, the latter are a bit of everyone.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Usually the person who has asked the question - or the person who - within the subthread I am arguing with. Or myself I I'm telling a joke.

Though on a more metaphysical level I imagine other people being just like me dressed different vis a vis the way their brain works.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I hear that Harry Dean Stanton is an ILX lurker. No really.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I wouldn't do it otherwise, would I?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr. Stanton - LOVED you in The Missouri Breaks!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

On ILM I suppose I'm talking to Michael Wells, Gareth, Stevem, most of the time. Or myself if it's Groove Armada. On ILE I think my questions tend to be more general, I can often guess who will have an answer, Mark S on Journalism threads etc. But I don't think I'm specifically addressing someone so much.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i post for that guy from hermit's hermits that nude spock once said was a lurker

mark s (mark s), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a very good question, and very hard to answer. Because in answering "who are writing to?" you're partly answering "why are you writing here?". I honestly don't know.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know.
myself? a lot of the time i say things about myself that i'd like to overlook or deny... if i put it on here, i can't run away from it.

well, i can, and do. but fuck it, it's nice to get it out in the open.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 14 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Generally I follow the same pattern Pete follows; generally I write in response to a particular person's post/question unless I'm making a joke or telling a story, in which case I'm writing partially to everyone reading the thread and partially to myself.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

the other people on ile. sometimes specific people, sometimes just everyone.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan you hurt me, you hurt me in my heart

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, minna, sometimes I'm writing directly to the person that started the thread.

Sometimes I say something generic and hope someone comments.

Usually, Tracer Hand, I make a reference to another post or poster to show where my comment is coming from, g-kit. It makes it more like an actual conversation.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

That's me on the right, ILX in the background

http://www.savethemall.org/images/f5_2.jpg

oops (Oops), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

What Tom said, plus sometimes I'm just trying to making whoever I'm replying to on the thread question themselves.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

1) people who post to ILX
2) people who read ILX but don't post
3) Random googlers

jel -- (jel), Friday, 14 February 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

It varies:
One person (I normally make this specific) who I want to address
The questioner
Those who are in the discussion
My pals here
The people I want to impress/amuse
Everyone
