Can't we all move to Delaware?

What if all of us Lefties in America were to move to a small state and completely take it over?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

hasn't this already been done with Vermont? i.e., all the hippies from NY, NJ, PA, and MA moving up there and making it one of the most liberal states in the country (before, VT had been rock-solid GOP [albeit William Weld/"don't tread on me"-GOP, not Trent Lott/rah rah segregation-GOP]).

anyway, seeing as Delaware is the state which has the most lenient corporate laws on the books, i don't think that they'd exactly open lefties with open arms. rhode island or maine might be a better bet.

and have you ever BEEN to delaware? it aint exactly a cultural hotbed

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

tax free shopping, tho

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

downtown wilmington must be the most boring city on the planet. the rest of wilmington, one of the most dangerous (some parts as bad as the worst that Philly has to offer).

and the "high point" of DE culture is George Thorogood -- think about it.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

heheh but
a) this is a joke
b) maybe there would be enough of us to create culture!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanna move to Nebraska, coz I worked out that Lincoln is in the centre of America. This is not science, I could be wrong.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

It is now proven by science that Linnoln is the center of America.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Try and take over a state that actually has double digit electoral votes, at least.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

can an individual declare their property independent from the state?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the more interesting experiment would be to switch the populations of Texas and California and see whether they actually turn into each other after a couple of decades.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

You could just move to BC.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

before christ?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

no, there Reform voters.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Gordon Campbell... whatta hippie.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the more interesting experiment would be to switch the populations of Texas and California and see whether they actually turn into each other after a couple of decades.

Tom, you'd be disappointed to find out that there's a good population chunk of California that's practically Texas anyway.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The Liberal party is pretty central but they are left of the dial still, specially compared to US politics.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHAA immigrant jokes

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHAA immigrant jokes

Disappointed as far as the interest of your experiment, not disappointed in the actual population. For fuck's sake, Tom.

(Hey, this thread is all about me! I was born near vermont, and lived in DE the rest of my life.) All my aunts and uncles up in Vermont don't like all the imported people. All the hippies did move up there and complain abut how ugly the poor local people's property is. My uncle really doesn't like these people.

In Delware there are plenty of lefties/hippies as well as corperations. It is a little ironic, but makes an interesting population.

"and have you ever BEEN to delaware? it aint exactly a cultural hotbed "

Sure it is: Zen Guerrilla, Tom Verlaine, me & my friends, etc.

(And it's right between NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, & Washington D.C.)

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I read that Denver is 50 miles west of the exact center point of America, which means that maybe the center of the united states is my hometown of Greeley, Colorado! Which is also ironic because my parent's house is a few houses down from the EXACT CENTER OF GREELEY. !!!(!)!)!

Mandee, Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

but but its proven by science!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I think this would be idea of hell.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 16 February 2003 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

So does that sign mean I'm actually floating somewhere in the Atlantic right about now? Or did New England finally secede from the union?

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 16 February 2003 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

It means you are standing north of the sign, you hemispherist.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 16 February 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

But as far as the US and British delegations were concerned, Monsieur de Villepin's words were completely beside the point.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Sunday, 16 February 2003 07:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey groovy people let's all move to Delaware" vs "All 'groovy people' shall report to their assigned homes in Delaware by tomorrow morning"

g.cannon (gcannon), Sunday, 16 February 2003 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still going with Lincoln, coz it's mentioned in a Number One Cup song (what ever happened to them?)

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 16 February 2003 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I think lack of space would be a problem.

I mean, there are already more lefty ILXors than people living in Delaware as it is. To add all the Lefties in America... delashare

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 16 February 2003 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Mandee, you use 'ironic' like Alanis M.

the pinefox, Sunday, 16 February 2003 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Per the World Almanac, there is no generally accepted definition of geographic center, nor has any government agency officially established such a place. The U.S. Geological Survey, however, (unofficially, I guess) reports the center of the contiguous states as near Lebanon, Smith County, Kansas, and the center of the 50 states as west of Castle Rock, Butte County, South Dakota.

According to the Bureau of the Census, the U.S. Center of Population (population gravity, or "that point upon which the U.S. would balance if it were a rigid plane without weight and the population distributed thereon") is 2.8 miles east of Edgar Springs, Missouri.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 16 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

The trick is to take over states like North Dakota and Wyoming.

A. you don't need that many people to sway the voting pattern.
B. because of the whole electoral college thing, States like this are way overrepresented in Congress (Wyoming 400,000 people, 2 Senators) and in Presidential elections.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 17 February 2003 01:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Delaware is not so bad. I hear Rehobeth Beach is nice.

I used to go to Wilmington just to use their public library when I lived in a crappy little town in Delaware County (Pennsylvania). It was the closest halfway decent library. (In fact, I specifically remember checking out books about Anarchism from that library.) There's also a really boring little art museum near (or in?) Wilmington--boring unless you happen to love the Pre-Raphaelites. There was one small painting of William Blake's room, by I forget what artist, which was my favorite thing in their permanent collection.

Still, the "opera house" in Wilmington sometimes picks up performers I'd be interested in seeing whose tours don't include Philadelphia. I think Philadelphia's live music scene is very weak in certain areas, including international music of various sorts.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 17 February 2003 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

We could change its name to simply "Aware."

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 17 February 2003 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

fifteen years pass...

I like this idea. Love the Delaware Shore.
