Windows USB problem

Hello. I'm hoping someone can help me with a crappy problem my PC seems to have developed.

I have a Windows 98SE PC. I also have a digital camera. For 6 months, they worked togetehr in harmon fine. Then they stopped. having checked the camer and the PC thoroughly, it seems the problem is that my computer has fogotten it has USB ports. In device manager, there isn't even an entry for USB controllers. Nothing at all.

So - what can I do to tell my computer that it does have USB ports and get them up and running again? I am totally baffled, and not very computer-savvy. Advice gratefully received, and thanks, and sorry for such a boring thread.

I am very embarrassed by my typing in the previous entry. It always goes crap when it's late and I'm tired.

Is there a loose connection somewhere? like, if your USB ports go through a card, take apart your case & make sure the connections didn't get knocked loose.

Other than that, um... find a nice repair shop near your home & schlep it over there.

Check BIOS settings if they're built-in, or check the card's drivers otherwise.

Give your PC a hug. Maybe you haven't been paying it enough attention recently. You may find that a well-chosen bottle of wine and a video of its choice will make all the difference.

Well, make sure it's enabled in the bios first (press delete as your pc is coming on probably). If it is then try starting windows in safe mode and removing the usb drivers from device manager there, then restarting. If still no luck then try disabling the controller in the bios, then starting windows, then shutting down, then enabling the controller, then starting windows again. If this doean't work at least it'll give you something to say to whoever you pay to fix it.

Graham and geek, you were both correct - thank you! The hardest part was working out how to enable it once I discovered it wasn't working, but then I thought to look in the manual - crafty, huh - and from now on I will see the Page Up/Page Down keys in a new light.

Thanks for your help!

nine years pass...

this isn't specifically a windows problem, but does anyone have any experience getting white chocolate out of a USB connector?

Warm with hairdryer, holding it with the plug facing down so bits drip off, soak up what’s left with a paper towel while still warm.

Don't get it too hot though.

have you tried putting the connector in your mouth until it's warm and licking the white chocolate out, then drying it with a paper towel?
