I'm not much of a rugby buff and I find it very difficult to watch such mammoth beasts of men in shorts for an entire match but I was so hung over yesterday that I watched the entire Scotland - Ireland match AND WE WON. The most surprising thing is that I really go in to the game and even whooped with delight on a couple of occasions.

I work in Donnybrook and the restaurant in our building overlooks the Leinster grounds.

Oeuff, Eng/Fr game not much to shout about, I thought. Some nice moves and a couple of lucky/sensational breaks (Jason Robinson I love you even if you have the hugest head in the world) from the lads, but overall the defences were too evenly matched. WHERE'S THE PASSION?! If we aren't going to see grown men sweating blood and getting all muddy and broken, what's the point of rugby? Eh?

I watched all the games. England/France was disappointingly passionless really - If only Merceron had have been able to kick the goals they'd have won, which would have made my day. France v Ireland should be absolutely fantastic later in the championship.

Italy v Wales. Shame on the Welsh forwards! Outmuscled and unprepared to do the dirty work required to make ground. Some of the tackling was shocking - time after time the Italians broke 2 or more tackles when they weren't even moving at pace! Too often the forwards went absent in defensive situations close to the line leaving a big Italian forward to be stopped by a Welsh back. No contest! The Italian back row were heroic - the openside was everywhere- and the hooker was good too. Barring a miracle England will put 60 or 70 points on Wales next Saturday.

Ireland were as impressive as I expected. O'Driscoll really is a genius and even the unsung players like Byrne, Demspsey, Foley etc were superb yesterday. If the Welsh forwards want to learn how to defend they should watch a video of the second half of this game, when Scotland had 10 minutes of constant pressure and still couldn't break the line.

i'm not a big rugby fan, ronan, but i would generally watch ireland matches. my rugby knowledge is minimal, but we were good yesterday..

I am still in mourning for the Welsh defeat. Why can't my boyos play the way they did in their glory years of the 70's??

My Dad used to captain Cardiff, and was an ex-international player himself (a long time ago), so I was brought up with rugby being a bit of a religion in our household.

I think just about every bf I ever had was a rugby player. I have a weakness for number 8s.

Italy winning totally made my day. My only sadness is that my best friend, who shares his name and genes with the oldest surviving Welsh international captain (there's a test for someone!), wasn't there to witness it with me. Ah well, I'll be sure to mention it in passing.

Scotland were dire too, other than a 15 minute period in the 2nd half when they managed to get things moving. It seems the final table can pretty much be decided - England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Wales. Any arguments with that?

I can only think of Bleddyn Williams who captained Wales in about the late forties, I think. I'm sure there are older surviving Welsh captains than that though.

i'm really glad there are some egg-chasing fans on here as mypete (the person who got me into watching rugby in the first place) has gone to new zealand for three weeks so i have no one to watch it with :(

Owing to the evilness of Eastern Standard Time, I only saw the last 25 mins of Scotland v Ireland but what a result! Murphy's pace for the 2nd try was amazing. And to see the subs come on towards the end and play like they hadn't the victory sewn up was great too. The question now is - who do we play at out-half now that O'Gara's fit again?

Of course, everyone's saying that the 6 Nations was decided in Twickenham on Saturday and it is difficult to see the English stumble from here, but of course the asme was said last year so I say it's all for the taking. Ireland have England in Dublin this year so bring it on!

Sad days indeed for Welsh rugby - beating Italy in soccer and losing to them in rugby - who'd have thunk it?

His name is Harry Bowcot* (* for google purposes, it's the same as the letter before it), and he first played for Wales in the 1920s. Having the same name as him gives my mate extremely easy access to tickets at the Millennium Stadium and drinks bought for him by old Welsh men in pubs.

Ah you've got to give Shane Byrne some credit, I mean he really must have the courage of his convictions to have that haircut all the way through playing for the best rugby teams with all those chrome dome types that I went to school with making jokes about what a mullet he had.

O'Driscoll really is something else, best Irish player I can remember seeing, he's like 5 times as good as Simon Geoghan was on a good day. Humphries was very unlucky not to get Man of the Match I felt, it was one of his best games for Ireland. Was great to finally beat Scotland over there, and such a convincing scoreline too.

As for England-France, it was never in doubt really was it, France's try was lucky at best. Robinson was extremely impressive, though England's attack didn't look frightfully convincing. Hard to imagine Ireland beating them but not impossible considering it'll be in Landsdowne Road.

I'd play Humph - he really controls the game with his kicking out of hand, and seems to be able to keep the game in the opposition's half when it really counts. O'Gara is a good player, but DH doesn't deserve to be dropped.

Oh good christ that was a terrifying match, my pulse is still hammering away. Ireland were dreadful, defence was absolutely abysmal particularly for the second try. We didn't deserve to win, even if you discount the ridiculous refereeing decision which took the game from Wales. Having said all that, that was the most exhilarating game I've seen in a long long long time, in any sport.

O'Gara had a fantastic game. He was definitely your key player there. His kicking was tremendous - what ball we got he quickly chucked out. Fair play to you.

O'Connell and O'Kelly in the lineout and Gleeson and Easterby in the loose. England's lineout needed Johnson obv.

Putting Chris Jones on would have helped England's line out. You can't miss someone that tall with your throw.
England's back three and centres were, as their previous two games, a mess. Out of position, relying on the back and second rows to cover, especially when the forwards should've been concentrating on winning ball elsewhere in the loose.
As my PE teacher once said (but not to me): "Put your hands down your shorts, Harrison, it'll make them sticky and you'll be able to catch the bloody ball."
