This rainforest potion has been spreading the globe and creeping into
the western world in the last decade or so. Any ILErs
tried this or heard stories? Thumbs up or down? And what about
the adherents and their goofy (if not cheesy) syncretic beliefs?

Bear in mind: a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing!

It is mostly a tourist drug in Peru and Ecuador(they call it yajé there)..... before i tried it i heard all the stories about the serpents approaching you and telling you your life in symbols and stuff.... i actually saw a serpent , but it didn't have a face though. I didn't know it was being used in other places because I know that it is kind of dangerous when you try it without the shamanic guide, but then shamans are mostly charlatans. at the end, ayahuasca it's prolly the best natural hallucinogen in the world.

Emanuel, by tourist drug, do you mean it is a stop on the
'backpacker trail', with commercially oriented 'shamans'.

In English, it is known as yage, which Burroughs and Ginsburg wrote
about in the "Yage Letters".

In Brazil, there is a syncretic group based on shamanism and christianity, which has spread overseas to rich countries.
