tot ziens

dleone (dleone), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Waar spoor voor de train naar Leiden, alstublieft?
Which platform for the train to Leiden, please?

kloutzak - literally, ballsack, a derogatory term

stroopwafel - a syrup-wafer treat which is lekker (delicious)

een stuk broodje - one piece of bread.

I could go on but you get the rather banal picture. It's a ugly language in one way but I'd like to learn it...

Tot ziens!

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Cruyff, van der Kerkhof, Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkard, Bergkamp, Davids...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ik zou het echt niet weten Erik, maar in iedere geval niet genoeg. Ik moet mijn woordenschat nog vergroten.

Minky Starshine what is the Leiden connection out of curiousity? (I live there)

stevo (stevo), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Leiden is BEEEEEEEEEYOOOOOOOOOOTIFUL. Nice, tranquil, and really really close to Amsterdam; it's PERFECT.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

oh shit those photos weren't supposed to be *that* big. Excuses.

stevo (stevo), Monday, 17 February 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I have always thought mooi to be a beautiful word.

Rijsttafel, denk ik, Mr Perry.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevo - I spent two summers as a bloembollen worker and lived 4 kn from Liden (in Warmond). I was back last April for a weekend and enjoyed two drunken nights in the jazz club. I envy you - it's a great little place and I often thought that if I ever worked in Amsterdam that I'd live somewhere like Haarlem or Leiden and commute... Of course, the big city has it's own advantages too but everywhere is so near, one could get a nicer pad in Haarlem/Leiden etc. for your money...

*wistful sigh* Leiden...

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Minky Starshine - thats pretty much why, despite working elsewhere, I've ended up staying in Leiden. Well that and marrying a local girl.

(sorry for hijacking the thread Erik)

stevo (stevo), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 17 February 2003 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure of the spellings of these, but... Gottferdammer! is definitely my favourite. And I think... Smoerig Hoerig (again? Spelling? It means skanky ho, I like that one)

And I have no hope of being able to spell it, but I know how to ask for wheatbeer or coffee with appleballs. And that "ahlshtableef" thing that means please and thank you. OH! And UITGANG!!!

But apparently, my Dutch pronounciation is appalling, I always get asked if I'm South African. Sigh. This is my Aafrikaaner aunt's fault.

kate, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Melkkeshokolatte?

I didn't know apples had balls. I s'pose in Holland...

JeremyZag, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 07:40 (twenty-three years ago)

wait those second ones aren't right . . .

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 07:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Appelbollen! Or however you spell them. They are SO GOOD!!! They take, like, a while apple, core it, put cinamon down the hole, cover it in pastry and then bake it. Oh my god, they are like apple orgasms.

kate, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 07:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i think that there are Dutch people who work in my office building. i overheard them one day on a cigarette break -- at first it sounded like German, only wrong. so i figured it was Dutch that they were speaking.

sorry to offend Erik or any Dutch speakers, but i don't like the way spoken Dutch sounds -- to my ears, it sounds like someone with a speech impediment trying to speak German. and i can't understand a word of spoken Dutch. though i can understand it if i read it.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 07:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Wintermute = my favorite Dutch poet by now. Klassiek!

Omploop

Hey, I'm learning new words from this thread! A very beautiful word too. Thank you, David.

This thread is the best medicijn for my winterdepressie!

godverdomme.

erik, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 07:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the Dutch language, I think it's very sexy. But then maybe that's cause Dutch boys are always so cute... (except for my scary psycho stalker ex boyfriend from Amsterdam. His psycho-hood kinda negated his cuteness.)

kate, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 07:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Omloop. Alsjeblieft.

erik, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 07:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Beterschap en sterkte.

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Goddamn I USED to be able to say "Hello my name is raisin bread for you" and also "Hello my name is scrap bucket for you" but I've forgotten.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

leker sp.?

it means great(?)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Oude Goude! Piraat! Frambise! Kriek! Witbier! (Ulp some of these may be Flemish and I'm too ignorant to know the difference) I know the word for church,too, when I see it but I can't remember the spelling OTTOMH.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

kerk!

(no, sam, no!)

erik, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Oude kerk!

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Roken is dodelijk (sp?)

Maar dat stopt me niet om een cigarette in mijn mond te steken en erop los te paffen.

Chauvenistic? Maybe, but I always preferred Flemish over Dutch since the latter sounds too harsh (or German). Our dialect (West-Flemish) is influence by French which I think makes it sounds so soft.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

apparently it's oude gouda: i wz mocked on the march for my pronunciation

haha we all (= me and sistrah becksta) are required by dr vick to say van gogh and breughel the k-korrekt and k-k-gutteral dutch way also when they enter the convo (which = v.often as we r all arty nonces)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

A sore throat is an occupational hazard for those attempting to learn Dutch. I agree with Nathalie Flemish does generally sound better.

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Toren (there is a "tulip toren" in my hometown).

Also pofertjes.

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Dutch = sharp, articulated, harsh
Flemish = soft, rounded, can be very cute spoken by the right person.

I like Flemish. I like Flemish boys. It's strange that in conversation Dutch and Flemish ppl sometimes cannot understand each other, while its basically the same language.

Wat zeg je?

poffertjes = lekker!

erik, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

lekker = ?

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

lekker = what mary said = (tasts) good

erik, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

ah yes! I'm clearly illiterate in dutch as well as english...

poffertjes are best when undercooked and doughy, imo. And greasy.

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Wat een Jinx is!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

erik, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 08:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Maak kaas niet oorlog!

logjaman, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

erik, are you not familiar with Brainpower?!

"‘T maakt niet uit of het rechts of links is
Want dit is dus precies wat een jinx is
Bepaal zelf of het iets of niks is
Maar dit is dus precies wat een jinx is"

(nb - I have no idea what this means)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I did learn the Dutch for "the mixing of the green and brown" from a lovely International Airport song. But I've forgotten it, something like "de menging der groen & brun". That is probably way off the mark.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Herlaas = unfortunately

leeg = empty

giftig = poisonous

prima = excellent

boom = tree

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Bettie Serveert = Bettie Serves. What a great band. Must remember to track down a copy of their Lamprey and Private Suite albums. I have Palomine and Dust Bunnies, both of which are excellent. And all of them bar Carol van Dijk were in a band called De Artzte (sp?) which means The Doctors.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I worked for a company which had Hamsterjam offices called Overmolen and Molenwerf. Overmolen means "the top floor of a windmill" and Molenwerf means "a works where they build bits of windmill".

ooh, just remembered....snell = fast

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

prima giftige boom is leeg, helaas!

erik, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

erik, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

just when I was abt to accuse the Dutch nation of the unlikely act of confusing squirrels with the things they bury in the ground, I remembered that the German for squirrel was Eichhörnchen (literally: little oak rodent).

The Austrians opt for the less literal Eichkatchen (little oak cat).

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a Dutch translator by trade, so I know lots of Dutch words. I think "lekker" may be my favorite Dutch word. I like the words that have no English equivalent like "gezellig" (cosy/convivial/social/pleasant/homy/fun) and "kegel" (bad breath, usually after a night of drinking).

Maria :D (Maria D.), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(acc.dr vick who is a.bilingual and b.a doctor of EngLit):
"belagelijk”= “absurdly laughable or stupid”
“gelagelijk” = "gigglesomely laughable"
“verlagelijk” = “to be lost inside its own laughability"

mark s (mark s), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I learned these in the past 24 hours.

overleden = deceased
dekbed = quilt
