Sir Alex Ferguson Has Kicked David Beckham

In the head. Well, that's what it said on the telly this morning. Apparently it was a 'freak accident'. For a moment I thought he had kicked Roy Keane.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd pay good money for video footage.

Tag, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 09:52 (twenty-three years ago)

um, my brother did wonder what would have happened if it had been roy keane. I would have said 'nothing' as I do think he has a psychological hold on his players.

Most of the country is finding out what a bully alex ferguson is and a lot of ppl appear to be somewhat shocked but they might not even glance at the sports section in the paper (a lot of branedead emails abt how a bad example for children this is).

This is a very funny story. especially for an arsenal supporter such as myself.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

If it had been Sven after the match the other week (which would have been far more justified) then he'd be picking up his UB40 by now.

Oh yes though, it's absolutely hilarious. Mind you, Frank Clarke was on the radio this morning saying that he quit management because he nearly decked one of his players

chris (chris), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I think in an echo of football's rules Beckham should be allowed to throw a cleat-heavy football boot at an undefended Ferguson's face and basically see how *he* likes it.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, presumably it was a Manchester City player that Frank Clark nearly decked. Looking at the City team at the time, I can understand that.

Tag, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Bothered. (shrugs)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy, how would that echo football's rules?

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Which football manager are you most scared of? I'm scared of Graeme Souness. I saw him and one of his cronies sitting in a car in an alley (or 'lane' as I believe they're called) once, he looked like he'd sent one of his henchmen inside somewhere to bump somebody off.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

it's ferguson's refusal to apologise that amazes me. i heard beckham spat on him after it happened, and posh spice wanted to "sort out" ferguson. it's like an episode of footballer's wives, except romeo beckham probably isn't a hermaphrodite.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

this is great stuff. very entertaining, dont forget sport is entertainment, and its the duty of ferguson/beckham etc to do things like this

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I find Fabio Capello a little scary, he looks "connected".

Good question Tim, I was wondering where the rules of association football go on about an eye for an eye etc.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Beckham do anything particulalry bad during the match, or was it telescopic passes as usual?

Of course, Jesus Gil *is* 'connected' but he's not a manager and his comedy value perhaps outweighs the scariness of his associates. Although I don't think he's funny actually.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe that this has attracted so little comment; a manager has admitted physically assaulting his employee and regardless of fact that the employee doesn't seem to want to take action (save buggering off to another club heh heh) doesn't change the fact its as insight into the management practices of Ferguson (and by extension, others within the game).

Ferguson has been lauded in management circles - he's given lectures about successful employee management - and I'd have thought that at the very least there's PR value in someone - the TUC, or the legal firms who do union work - pointing out what Beckham's rights are. Hell, one could even expect his union to be involved. Oops, we're talking about the PFA.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:58 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe in a reflection of FA rules, Beckham should be allowed to throw a badger around in one room of Ferguson's mansion?

pulpo, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

however aggressive and OTT fergusons management might be it is surely preferable to that of glenn hoddle (who seems coldly vicious and self-righteous)

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

is that a ref. to the old offside rule, pulpo?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Hold on Dave, AF has admitted to booting the boot which he says accidentally hit DB in his smug face, hasn't he? That's a bit different from admitting deliberately striking an employee. You have to be Trevor Francis to do something like that.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Could have been worse, he could've hit Roy Keane. Actually, Keane probably would have thrown the boot back shouting "that's not fucking hard enough, do it again!"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

however aggressive and OTT fergusons management might be it is surely preferable to that of glenn hoddle

Of course it is. Fergie has actually won things.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"I can't believe that this has attracted so little comment;"

From ILX or in general? Cos I've heard plenty of comment about it. I agree that it was semi-accidental, but if you physically hurt one of your players, a simple apology wouldn't go amiss.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

chris is spot on re capello

david moyes is like the actually scary 'eyes boring into yr skull' version of gerard houllier, who's just old and befuddled and vindictive

man, beckham is the lastplayer ferguson wanna be cheesing off. been brewing for ages though. i loved how ferguson called it "a freak act of nature" or something like that. EH?!

http://images.thesun.co.uk/picture/0,,2003080134,00.jpg

Is that a Cult t-shirt he's wearing? Becks in goth-metal shockah!

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it was semi-accidental, and I expect he'll probably apologise, and it'll all blow over in a couple of weeks. I certainly don't think he was singling out Beckham.

I'm pleased to see Ferguson hasn't mellowed though. I'd be disappointed if he hadn't thrown things around the dressing room after Saturday.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

You people, falling for the very idea that these people choose their own t-shirts.

*STYLIST*

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it might say "the cat" but i'm not sure. i hear ferguson is also in trouble for talking on his mobile while driving, but that is less interesting than this story...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

THIS POSER IS SPOILING THE CULT FOR EVERYONE!!

fergie wz into them when they were still southern death cult, hence the necessary violence

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you choose your own t-shirts Suzy?

zemko (bob), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i remember when i was delerious with drunkenness i tried to convince people that alex ferguson played the zither on andy cole's record (which flopped). not sure why...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

(Spice Girls' stylist and poss. now VB's, Kenny Lo, would *so* buy a Cult shirt)

Sinker, *tremble in fear* for the comment about Smell Me aka Mel C.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

And the Tanorexic, I don't like her duck face either.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

BECKHAM IS SPORTING AN ARGENTINIAN HAIRCUT! THIS IS THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i think he looks gorgeous, those stitches too.

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

If I had a big cut on my heid I'd wanna use my girly fringe to cover it up, not wear a girly hairband so everyone could see it...

smee (smee), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

he wants everyone to know what a meanie fergie is. he's probably raging, and i can't blame him. i hope it all blows over, though.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

the look on his face says "I'm gonna win ya Euro 2004 anyway so fuck y'all" i sincerely hope

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Sir Alex says it was a 'freak act of nature'

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim - intention doesn't enter into it; if I was in a meeting and my boss flew off the handle and in so doing whacked a cup towards me which cut me above the eye, I'd expect there to be a reprimand from the manager's superior at the very least.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Intention does enter into it, but still, if through rage you accidentally hurt someone, the first thing you do is apologise.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of what I know of this is rumour and it may well be that apologies / reprimands have been offered, mayn't it? (Obv my football gossip sources aren't anywhere near the calibre of yours but all this he-won't-apologise business sounds like tabloid goss to me).

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely the first thing you do is go 'UNG-HU' or some such noise?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you hating on the Chinese again Nick?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

What I want to hear from Ferguson is "I'm sorry Becks, that was meant for Little Lord Nistlerooy".

Tag, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think 'Ung-hu' is really Chinese. It's more 'ung-huh', the noise.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Quality pants-related story here: http://sport.independent.co.uk/football/man_united/story.jsp?story=379366

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

did beckham really spit on ferguson afterwards?
i used to be think souness was fairly intimidating looking (he reminded me of begbie)but since i started watching the office i just think of him as being exactly like your man finchy...

robin (robin), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Rod Begbie?

Tag, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Tag, you can't get away with that anymore.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The kids still understand, Nick.

Tag, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HE LIVES

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

In Boston.

Tag, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

And he's getting married.

I trust everyone's going to congratulate him on his nuptuals.

Tag, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Hang on a minute - so Sir Alex booted a boot and the boot happened to hit Beckham? Pah! I thought he had actually kicked him, got someone to hold his head down or something. It's a storm in a teacup.

I don't think Sir Alex is Beckham's employer. His employer is Man Utd plc or something, isn't it? Nit, nit, nit, pick, pick, pick!

There was an article by Wee Gordon Strachan about how modern footballers can't take rollickings like they used to. It was in The Guardian a few weeks ago.

I am always pleased to read about Rod Begbie.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Rod certainly seems to have met his match...

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

They both do IMPROV.

Tag, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's nice. Gooddd olddd Roddd.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I sincerely hope he has invited K!E!I!T!H! to the wedding.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

IMPROV, eh? Cor, I hadn't got that far. He does seem to have 'matured' though, albeit in a funny way. For a while I thought it was an imposter. They're going to get a robot hoover to chase the dog.

I think we should all go to the wedding. First choice venue, you know. How many people can say that?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 10:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a dream last night that there was a competition to meet David Beckham for the day. You got a scratch card if you bought something (can't remember what it was but I was buying it anyway), I got given the card, scratched it off and as I started to see the word 'congratulations' the card started playing a little fanfare. Fucking hell, I'd only gone and won!

I was more amused than excited, but was obviously happy at the prospect of being able to talk to him about United. I was working out what I was going to say to him when I realised "Hang on a minute, this isn't very plausible, you're dreaming you bloody idiot".

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Why didn't Alex Ferguson kick David Beckham? I mean, he deserved it, he played like a girl.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara in encouraging violence towards women shockah!

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

How come there's no thread about him now being on Real Madrid?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)
