This is the thread where you recommend something - (a book, a CD, a film, an activity, a recipe, anything you like) - to a specific somebody else on ILX. Your post should read "I think [OTHER POSTER] would like [THING] because...". No abuse please!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

''No abuse please!''

b-but you remove so many possibilities tom!

Anyway.

I'd recommend Peter Brotzmann's 'Machine Gun' on FMP label to Tom Millar because I think this might 'wake him up' and make him 'see' just what Bush and his cronies have in mind for the ppl of Iraq.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend Swans' 'Body to body, Job to job' CD to Melissa W because M. Gira had a pessimistic (maybe an understatement here) view of life BUT I think he is very funny at the same time. It makes me laugh anyway.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend Roland Barthes' A Lover's Discourse to Kate because it is the most horribly accurate dissection of crushology ever written.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

(i still find a lover's discourse very hard to read - i just end up skimming over whole paragraphs thinking "for christ's sake just get to the point! that said the bits i do manage to take in are scarily otm.)

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend the novel "One People" by Guy Kennaway to CJ the Unruly. I think the delight I found in it would fit in perfectly with her joyful but grounded personality.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend Space Channel 5 to Starry!

someone else honest (starry), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i recommend Zelda: Majora's Mask to starry, hem hem

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend the second RF shoot interview with New Jack to Nate Patrin. Despite being absolutely hilarious and quite revealing re his court cases, it also contains some of the best junk matches ever, and gives the world a new catchphrase to use with your friends: "Ho ho ho motherfuckers!"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

that's just a play on my catchphrase ("yo yo yo, motherfuckers").

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I recomend the Getaway (game, not film) to N. for combining GTA3 and Time Splitters.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend Kevin Drumm's Sheer Hellish Miasma to Julio, and hell, everyone else too.

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, julio'd be into that.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll get this. thanks.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend Nina Simone's 'Baltimore' album to RJG because he doesn't think he likes it but is not listening properly.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, I recommend '11 deadly venoms' (might be 12, I can't remember) by Depth Charge to Jel just cause he would like it.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

(but Jel is a mystery to me so I might be totally wrong here)

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

search & destroy - depth charge

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

9 - that's it! Do you know them (ok, him), jel?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope, I don't, but I'll check them out.

I've been thinking out what I'd recommend to whom, and it's kinda difficult. I think Di would like Henry's Dress/the Aislers Set. And I'd recommend the Heartworms to Mark C. And I recommend James Kochalka comics to Alan and Martin Skidmore. But, then I think what if I recommend stuff that people end up hating, I'd feel I'd let them down. Sarah McL might like James Kochalka stuff coz he draws cute kitties.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

but then some of his stuff is a bit rude.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend Haribo confectionary to one and all.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to recommend Murray's Pomade to chaki so he can buff and gloss his devil-lock.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i recommend the borribles to mark s because it's right up his proverbial alley. he'll probably hate it oh well.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend Tunnel Visions by Christopher Ross to julio because I think he'd like it. I know I did. Made me want to be a tube warden. For a day.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

cheers nick :)

I'm at work listening to charlamaigne palestine's 'Four manifestations on six elements' and I'd recommend this to anyone who loves Aphex Twin's 'SAW II'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 February 2003 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to reccomend White storm the story of Real Madrid by Phil Ball to Omar, if he ever reads this bizzitch any more.

chris (chris), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Rockist Scientist should read Amin Maalouf's "The Rock of Tanios".

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I started my first Joyce novel last night ('Portrait of an arist'). this afternoon I was just looking on the web and reading abt Ulysses. Looked at ILM and found a post by jess on how he struggled with the book.

so I'd recommend Ulysses for dummies:

http://www.bway.net/~hunger/ulysses.html

but also annotations and a breakdown of the novel here:

http://www.robotwisdom.com/jaj/ulysses/index.html

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

haha...I think everyone should go straight to ch 13.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Portrait is by a long way his least interesting, I think. I've not read FW myself. (Obviously if you want to borrow a copy of Dubliners, which is one of the great story collections, or Ulysses - or FW indeed - your personal library is equipped!)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
I was browsing juno.co.uk and i saw that there's now a timbaland-produced fatman scoop single called "drop" and, sure enough, it's fatman rapping over the track of the same name off the timbaland solo thing last year. i remember Tracer saying that the instrumental was what he thought that was what timbo should be moving towards (free-er, less self conscious trax) and the tim/magoo rap was just an annoyance, so Tracer: you should listen to this!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 30 March 2003 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to recommend "So I am Glad" by AL Kennedy to Rainy because it's a really tender book and I think she might like it.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 30 March 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin why did you prefer Dubliners to Portrait?

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 30 March 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Portrait was not hugely interesting, while I think Dubliners is one of the greatest collection of short stories ever written - maybe the greatest.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I just came across this website which I thought Erik Digibeet might like. (link pinched from the Creative Review annual 2003)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

thank you Cozen, I will look for it at the library tomorrow morning!

rainy (rainy), Friday, 4 April 2003 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed with Martin. Portrait is a classic tortured-artist-struggling-to-find-himself tale, which Joyce puts a nice spin on, but still. Whereas Dubliners is stark and simple and gorgeous.

jaymc., Friday, 4 April 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep finding myself wondering if nickalicious would like the new Blood Brothers album because it's kind of Mike Patton-y/Fantomas-y, or if it would be too screamy for him. I must stalk him until I know the answer.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to recommend Matt Pond PA - 'The Nature of Maps' to everyone.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the They Live approach. You have come to chew matzohs and kick ass and you're all out of matzohs.
