MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, what, language reflects reality shock?

alix (alix), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

aw, come on Alix, that might be obv, but the fact that the modern interweb can be used to monitor word useage *is* interesting, shurely?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I just hope no-one's monitoring my typos.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, it was just the way the article seemed not to think it *was* obv. And, you're right, it is interesting, although I am more interested in how the interwebnet tends to be a grebt place for neology.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham should make some graphs about the usage of words like classic, fite, and neducation.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

what abt MENTALIST?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Graph deliniating the use of the word "cockfarmer" from Feb 2002 to Feb 2003.

I'm a miserable failure.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, things like mentalist, grebt, cockfarmer, rub, etc. It's an exciting place, linguistics.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

is this to do with the 'yo' revival?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Tell us about forensic linguistics?

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend Clare coined a great elision last night that can be used as follows - "Nick Hornby's new novel is destined to be known as a 'crassic' of English literature". This goes quite nicely with 'insinnuendo', which another friend came up with quite inadvertently a few years back.

What this has to do with word bursts, I don't know. But words I thought were amazingly funny a couple of years back or in school now seem stale, although I am also wary of words suddenly becoming sexy for reasons that have little or nothing to do with errr aesthetics.

Like the Hoxton fin hairdo, words are only what your attitude makes them. But 'grebt' will (maybe) live forever in my heart.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

and chickenbear will never die!

I read a review of one of Momus's records (in 1989 or thereabouts) in which he is described as a pastichiste.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

A pastichiste of the bourgeoisie? How novel.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice to see Neducation bubbling under.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Neducation! Neducation! Neducation!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Today's "slang" and "word-bursts" + 100 years = proper English.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but where are all the Edwardian slang terms in current English?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

forensic linguistics is to do with language in court, language used by police and related stuff. I've only had two lectures, so, um, today we discussed what constituted a threat. In my head I discussed what constitutes an overlong lecture.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

so what caused the Grebt Peak of 10 August 2002?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

btw if the pinefox is reading, graphs like this wd possibly be part of the means by which novels which were also critical analyses of the novel could be videogames as well...

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

God knows. Really he does.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham fucked up the calculations for grebt.

God (graham), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

:(

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Awww. That graph is 14 day averages of uses/per day. This is the raw data, you might like this more:

mmm raw data... speculicious :-)…

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

It's great that Graham isn't wasting his time on nonsense, I think. (Actually I love him doing stuff like this.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I am 100% certain that I gave the world 'do you see?'...

Al_Ewing, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Those are beautiful.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't I deserve some credit for telling Graham to make the graphs??? :)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Credit to Sarah! But really, it's the fact that Graham then thinks "Yes, that is a sensible use of my time and talents" and goes off and does it that I love.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Welcome to my "life".

(Sarah, I'm sure Felicity thinks your's are beautiful too)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

-- Emma (emmaluvscak...), August 2nd, 2002.

i like BEORN but he is from Tha Hobbit so um. Gandalf is grebt in any form, as are the Nazgul (and sooooo scary in the film). Aragorn was always a bit of a bleh for me in the book, but Viggo Mortensen is really, really good in the film. and gollum is by far the most interesting if you're going to start getting all "all things philosophical in LotR" about it all. cripes sorry i've got to work now byee!

it was grebt for bouzing purposes! apart from friendly but slightly slow barman. but i sympathise with all bar staff who have to put up with us lot... -- katie (kjgrocot...), August 15th, 2002.

a white russian, because my best friend's g/f had never tried one. she didn't like it, which was good because i got to finish it off. people who order drinks to 'try' them = GREBT!
-- Dave M. (pton_mwaa...), August 16th, 2002.

-- Alan (Alan.Trewarth...), August 22nd, 2002.

I finally got round to seeing this last night and thought it was grebt. Good old Pinefox. Good old Coens. I didn't sense any emotional investment though - or no more so than usual.
-- Tom (ebro...), August 6th, 2002.

unfortunately i don't think Farmer Dave was there last night (unless that was him behind a huuuge shock of hair, they didn't speak to the supporting lackeys um, bands at all) but yes arthur - he has been know to cause the odd flutter among the tompaulin female contingent also! heh. thanks for coming chaps - it was grebt!

-- Alan Trewartha (alan.trewarth...), August 6th, 2002.

spectra those belong to the horrible boys school! (currently staying in upper stuart street so I see it all the time).
the "God Save The Clean" graffiti is grebt, & the Nandor portait is interesting . . . also, the "I know who wrote this" in the alleyway by the Meridian.-- Ess Kay (orpheus_n...), August 29th, 2002.

last night i saw "show me love" (yes yes and then went to work and informed everyone that i watched a film about swedish lesbians arf!) and it was GREBT! and i also loved "together". but since i know nothing about films i was hoping you'd have a chat about these 2 and perhaps make some other recommendations (not just from moodysson, i think these are his only 2 feature length things no?). i want SLIGHTLY ANGSTY BUT NONETHELESS UPBEAT with good acting. so there.
-- katie (kjgrocot...), August 19th, 2002.

Bugger all chiz chiz. Yesterday I got a timesheet. Interesting things through our door have included a Cornish postcard from Tom and a Sardinian postcard from my GREBT CHUM C______. Also a cockfarming WRONG PARCEL arrived from amazon.co.uk. BASTARDS.
-- Sarah (starr...), August 29th, 2002.

Hawkses original is great too though and a brilliant comparison text (as is the original short story Who Goes There). It treats the scientist trying to communicate with the big carrot as a madman - it is fantastically hawkish to use the current definition of that word.
Arctic circle is a grebt place to set a vampire film btw.
-- Pete (pb1...), August 16th, 2002.

I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU HAD A DOCTOR WHO THREAD WHILE I WAS IN UPSTATE NEW YORK.
Leela was far and away my favorite. She was foxy and completely lethal; "Robots Of Death" is so classic it hurts. Zoe was also foxy and smart. My favorite TARDIS crew of all time is Tegan, Nyssa and Turlough, though. They were only together for two shows, but the whole evil companion thing was SO GREBT.
-- Dan Perry (djperr...), August 4th, 2002.

No thats me being angry and sad an trying to make a ruin thread cos 2002.2 was being the exact opossite of the AMAZINGLY SURPRISING FEKING GREBT 2002.1 and the whole shit came down this morning. Out of class for stupid reasong by stupid teacher and cos of that getting a 0 in physics, school saying i will have to change my classroom, no money and dad wont even let me feel like shit alone

(nice piccie jel!!) mine is a double futon with a thick mattress, lots of pillows and red, navy, yellow or green sheets/linen. there is also a grebt patchwork blanket that me and my mum made together and which is the snuggliest blanket evah! although when we stop renting (futon = dead easy to move, y'see) i want a bed from THE IRON BED COMPANY! -- katie (kjgrocot...), August 12th, 2002.

of course, this only applies if you subscribe to any of godwin's laws. naturally we don't. that said, here's a picture of me at halloween

it was a particularly grebt costume

Cricket on the radio (1 matching message)

Grebt, obv. Some are OK as sports commentators, some are poor. Vic Marks, CMJ and Jonathan Agnew are all good commentators and seem like personable chaps. Blowers is very entertaining but usually more interested in the pigeons than the cricket. Trevor Bailey's too posh for his own good and part of the 'it was all better in my day' mob. Jack Bannister (now on Talk Radio) does nothing but bang on about spread betting. Fred Trueman occasionally makes we want to throw the radio out of the window ('abolish the lbw rule!' like HELLO?). Graham Gooch has been known to put elephants to sleep.
-- RickyT (boyofbadger...), August 1st, 2002.

Mexico -dos and don't (1 matching message)

Where abouts are you flying in to? I did a Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca to the coast route which was fantastic. I would say that Mexico City and Oaxaca are a must - very different places, really interesting, vibrant and nuts.
Mole poblano in Puebla is a must to eat, though I loved all the food in Mexico. Monte Alban outside Oaxaca has grebt ruins - and of course if you are in Mexico City the Pyramids of the Sun & moon are a must. The Anthropological Museum in MC is brilliant too.

I want to go back to see Guadalahara and Copper Canyon.

-- Pete (pb1...), August 23rd, 2002.

Manchester (1 matching message)

Christ on a bike - what did Toms keyboard DO to my typing/coherency?? I blame my POX. Another grebt place to go for 7"s (if it's still there) = top floor of Afflecks palace, tons of ex-jukebox "cuts". A load of rub but some fantastic stuff in there too. And some naughty paperbacks - cor.
And for yr poncey London stylings you only need to go to the NEU! REVAMPED! square with it's Muji and it's Wagamamas, now fetch me my Kensington High Street my good man. The Town Hall is also a beautiful building and beats Westminister into a cocked hat.

ALTHOUGH - I don't know anywhere in Manchester (the Trafford Centre doesn't count) which has DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION EUROMIX TWO!!!

-- Sarah (starr...), August 15th, 2002.

Progress (1 matching message)

Martin - the impression I get from most surviving Roman texts, though, is not one of 'progress' being a motor of society. The Empire always had to contend with the notion that the Republic (particularly when ppl couldnt remember the Republic) was better/fairer/juster. Tacitus (I think - maybe Livy) is big on how everything was grebt when he was a lad but now the youth are out of control and morals are declining. -- Tom (ebro...), August 2nd, 2002.

(the other good ILE PKD thread)
PKD update! I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon - first collection of PKD short stories I've read & fairly much living up to all the accolades attributed to them etc etc etc. The Transmigration Of Timothy Archer - latter Dick & very, very affecting to me - completely1 unSF meditations on death, with random touches of the pre-Socratics, the sort of heretical-Christian fragments Beckett was so fond of, & the least irritating wranglings of Dante & Goethe I've seen in a long time. & his San Francisco rings true, to boot.
& just stayed up last night to read through Clans of the Alphane Moon (& something I'm glad I approached after becoming acquanting with PKD etc) - alternately hilarious &, er, provocative (=> heh my current mental state=the book). Grebt ideas & the like (when I clicked to the Clan names), + Lord Running Clam is possibly the bestest PKD character ever!-- Ess Kay (orpheus_n...), August 21st, 2002

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

(Was Graham talking about breasts again?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

That post was way too long. If I truly and deeply cared about ILX, maybe I could have simplified it a bit. Oh, well. Too late now.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

k-blimeyo!!

Why, wasn't Felicity?

(the comma in that question is optional)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

These are GREBT!

What about the pre-Valentine's runs on "rub"?

(I assume the cockfarmer spike (tee hee) was the result of a thread dedicated to the subject)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

¿to the subject of farming cock?

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

all your wordburst are belong to us!

fletrejet, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

TAKE OFF EVERY 'ZIG (I am gettin' so hot, I'm gonna take my 'zig off)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

correct on both counts

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

For example, identifying word bursts in the hundreds of thousands of personal diaries now on the web could help advertisers quickly spot an emerging craze.

Yeah right, like The Gap is going to be launching its new cockfarmer range this spring.
