I feel like just crawling into a hole to sob my stupidity away

Having you ever had a 9-hour interview with a really big company, tried your best to give a good impression, but still got those "no hire" vibes from the people afterwards.. then felt like giving up and just crawling into a hole and not wanting to come out?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

a nine hour interview??

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:29 (twenty-three years ago)

yes. well, not 9 hours. but yes.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:30 (twenty-three years ago)

yup. Awful feeling. That's why I'm stuck in the same deadend job gluing those plastic tabs on the end of shoelaces 12 hours a day.

Skottie, Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:33 (twenty-three years ago)

hold on to that feeling and go to another job interview.
You'll act in sucha debonnaire way it might impress them into hiring you.

the hegemon, Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:34 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, yes, yes, and yes. only the call-back interview was one hour, not nine (jesus, a nine hour interview?)

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes.. nine... 9am to 6pm. Granted, it was interviewing for two positions at once. But still, I'm this close to calling the local noose delivery boy.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:41 (twenty-three years ago)

comfort

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i think that this will cheer ya, DB!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I was about to send some condolences, DB, but... that... cat...

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

No offense, Tad, but I want to calmly tranquilize that cat permanently.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no! Sorry to hear the interviews were like that. And I know you were prepared. You will find something.

Jen (nstop), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:56 (twenty-three years ago)

(especially since the color of those glowsticks reminds of a certain color scheme of a certain video game console that played a prominent role in my interview day today)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, no word yet. Maybe I did ok. I dunno. I'm just not sure. but I'm getting "no hire" vibes.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I still can't get over the 9 hour thing - doesn't that count as cruel and unusual punishment?

Seriously, that sounds horrible. Good luck.

H (Heruy), Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:58 (twenty-three years ago)

db, I predict you'll get it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 20 February 2003 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

NINE HOURS?! Great Cthulhu, that's double the length of the most stressful, chilly interview I've ever had. Funny thing is that I got the job after all that....

Anyway, thiinking good thoughts here.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to a graduate recruitment day that lasted 8 hours once, plus a three-hour round drive. I thinbk I scuppered my chances when I told them my hobby was 'drinking' and that advertsing was "an evil industry, but I could be very good at it without thinking."

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had interviews that long before, but if they didn't hire you at the end of it, they're brainless weasels who should be boiled in oil. Condolences if appropriate.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

My longest interview was TWO DAYS and I got the no-hire vibes from the first half hour so you have my total sympathy DB :(

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Interviews suck. Here you go DB:
http://www.riam.kyushu-u.ac.jp/sanny/activity/member/mituhiro/pictures/cat.jpg

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

My sympathies...I still haven't got to the interview stage, I'm still at the "sending out a million resumes only to have them contemptously tossed in the wastebasket" stage.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

my approach to interviews is to be aggressively critical* of the org that's interviewing me

i. it might work (it did once, for basically my favourite of all the jobs i ever had)
ii. if it doesn't at least they come out of it feeling worse than me

*(i have hardly ever been AGGRESSIVELY critical on ilx, as i understand this word)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had the full-day things before, with tests and interviews and talks and exercises and all that. The negative vibes aren't always right, but even if it does turn out that way, it's just a wasted day and others will come. You have my sympathies anyway, because it is miserable to go through.

Clearest vibe I ever had, in that it was about as overt as telling me to fuck off, was when I was graduating from uni at the age of 40 and an interviewer said "This is a pretty young company - don't you think you'd find it very hard to fit in?" I tried pointing out that I'd spent the last four years with university students and fitted in okay, but the moment I heard the question I knew I had no chance (despite completing a perfect test in a quarter the time of the next quickest, etc.).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

see i wd probably have replied to that question v.aggressively: as in "the youth wd be no problem [expand on martin's pointing out], but the endemic stupidity implied by that question might — have you really given any thought to who or what you want here?"

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I know the story here, DB -- good thoughts and more for all this. We'll talk later as needed, get on AIM or something, as it should be a slow work day on my end.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"the youth wd be no problem [expand on martin's pointing out], but the endemic stupidity implied by that question might — have you really given any thought to who or what you want here?"

This aggressively critical mark s is turning me on!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

That blows, dude. Sorry.

When I was just out of college and looking for jobs, I got suckered into applying for a sales job. When I went back for the second interview, I had to ride along with one of their sleazy sales guys as he made his rounds trying to sell credit card processing to various small businesses in the middle of bumfuck, Virginia, an hour away from Richmond, where I live. I knew within 15 minutes (when the dude started quizzing me about sales terminology even though I have no sales experience or education) that I did not want the job, but since I was in his car while he was making calls, I couldn't say "I don't want this job" and leave, I was stuck. I acquired a massive headache and had to eat lunch at McDonalds (I'm vegetarian). One of the stores we stopped in was an army surplus store, filled with guns, military uniforms, boots, etc. where the guy working asked us (no joke) if we were affiliated with the government or with a religious group. After riding around with this dick for an entire day, we returned to the central office in Richmond. The guy says, "Now if you're interested in the job, you can come in and interview with the boss, but I get the feeling this might not be for you." I said "Bye!" Did I mention this was on my birthday?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

that's terrible but hopefully you won't lose hope.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I just got the call back, and i got turned down for both positions... and was recommended not to try and apply for similar positions between three and nine months from now.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus. Sorry DB.

Any word why?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

ARGH. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

WTF? What's their deal?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, DB.

If it'll make you feel any better, we can talk about what an evil company they are.

Or there's always this tactic, which works best at Very Big Companies: Well, clearly they didn't hire you because there weren't any positions available. But the HR folks have to keep interviewing candidates, otherwise it'll look like they have nothing to do all day and ::sklrlrlrlrk!:: their jobs will be on the chopping block. So don't take it personal!

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'know, had your 9-hour interview been conducted by a cat what was dancing with glowsticks, I bet you'd not feel as down about this whole thing. Maybe a little creeped out, of course.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Bad luck DB, and better luck next time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry again. Now I feel bad about posting my whiny little story. At least I didn't want that job.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

That's too bad, especially being told not to apply for other jobs. I think you should, just to spite them. To look on the bright side, if the interview was 9 hours it doesn't bode well for the hours you'd have been working.

isadora (isadora), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm posting today from a national organization for HR professionals, so I won't share my explicit views. Still, to get so definite a brushoff after so long an interview is appalling.

I've been to a few job interviews recently. In one case I thought it was going really well, but since then I haven't heard anything. Not quite as offensive as your situation, DB, but I feel you.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

db, at least they called you back... sorry my prediction was wrong. You're a very talented guy with in demand skills and I'm sure opportunities will come your way. My company in L.A. is hiring...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey DB, wanna move to Boston and work in a different industry?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry DB -- it might sound stoopid now, but you most likely do not want to work for a co. that has so little value for your time that they conduct interminable interviews.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm really sorry to hear that, Bri. That's terrible.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 21 February 2003 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I'd be as upset if this company wasn't already contacting me for four months prior via phone conversations. And I didn't think I did that bad in the interview!

I just hope that I can look back at what has seemed like one of the worst days in my life today, and laugh it off.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

They will rue the day they let the Donut (Bitch) slip through their fingers!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry DB -- it might sound stoopid now, but you most likely do not want to work for a co. that has so little value for your time that they conduct interminable interviews.

They will rue the day they let the Donut (Bitch) slip through their fingers!

heh, I hope. But I doubt it. This isn't just any normal big company.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

They're utter bastards. Even people I know who thrive among utter bastards hated working for them.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

donut bitch,

you tried you hardest and gave them your best. what more could you ask of yourself?

it's a longshot but someone who you talked to in the course of the interview who you made an impression on just might find something more suited for you and call you back?

at any rate, keep your chin up, you're too good to have some global monopoly software company bring you down.

MORE GLEE!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah. That explains a lot. But you'll pick yourself up, get yourself a great job with another company, and laugh. As will I when I get my new job.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Waz it Microsoft? If so, thank your lucky donut sprinkles you do not become part of their oh no! campus! oh no!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:20 (twenty-three years ago)

This was already in the planning and DB knew it, but here is a way that, if you can make it, will give him some good cheer in a few months. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

read Doug Coupland's - Microserfs and laugh your troubles away... In fact I'm going to go read it again right now.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm sorry to hear the news too, DB. dunno what to say but keep up yer spirits -- it's not the end of the world.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Just wanted to give really big thank you's to everyone who responded to this thread.. even the glowstick kitty. :)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

db i've been following this since you posted it and i'm feelin it dude. you put yourself out there in maybe the most vulnerable way you can, for a MUCH longer time than even the harshest, i dunno, cattle-call showgirl audition, and it's almost WORSE when they're hideous blood-suckers because to be rejected is one thing but to be rejected by cockfarmers is doubly insulting. it shouldn't be. they're suckers

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)

sigh, well to be fair, they were extremely polite and nice throughout it all, and often offered me a chance to get something to drink and use the restroom. It's been pointed out to me several times that, all horror stories aside, Ze Evil Vuns are the most competitive tech company in the world.. not just Seattle, not just Washtington State, not just the West Coast, not just the U.S... and that I should be happy I was even considered an interview candidate.

On the other hand, almost everyone I know in this town has worked for them, so it's really hard for me to grasp why, with my skills, I can't even get a foot in the door.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

what was the restroom like?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 21 February 2003 06:01 (twenty-three years ago)

db, belts are tight, even at the 'soft, and I'm sure that has more to do with it than with your skills specifically. I think that you should consider your foot in the general HR door there. I'm sure there are multiple divisions/teams etc that would require your skills before 3 or 9 months are up.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 21 February 2003 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

the restrooms were really really big and clean... like the buildings. Hospital grade.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 21 February 2003 06:16 (twenty-three years ago)

a bathroom with gurneys!! db you have struck out, my friend

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 21 February 2003 06:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I googled around on "Microsoft Job Interview Horror Stories" and found quite a few tales of terror (most are a couple years old though). Link 1, Link 2, Link 3 (excerpted from "Proudly Server My Corporate Masters") and a list of interview questions

DB deserves our props for just making it through. I'd raise a glass if I had one handy...

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 21 February 2003 07:09 (twenty-three years ago)

DB, this is a watermelon that was given to me by none other than Gallagher himself. Also here is a fright wig, and here is a rubber Dubya mask. I want you to have them -- you deserve mad props.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 February 2003 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

yes they are! :)

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 22 February 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

That's rotten, DB.

Yes, I have had a similar experience. I interviewed for a total of 8 hours with a 2-attorney firm(!) last July and they still haven't gotten back to me, even though it's kind of moot. What a waste of time, like Mary said. Can you imagine what the company would be like to work for if that's how they use your time when you're a candidate?

This is probably terrible advice but for what it's worth I just got really frustrated in my job hunt at one point and the next time an interviewer asked me, "So what are you looking for in a firm?" I just said, "Well, first of all, I'm looking for a job." Maybe that had nothing to do with anything but for whatever reason that was the job I got, go figure.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 22 February 2003 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and good luck is what I meant to say. Any company would be lucky to have the Donut Bitch! It will happen.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 22 February 2003 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

yes they are! :)

Astounding!

And yes, the DB would be an asset for anyone. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 February 2003 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DB i wz made so grumpy abt the way you were treated i talked abt me instead of you: it sucks, but it's also totally a mark of their lousiness, and no fault on yr part, and you are well out of there fr sure =>

Haha, dear god, when it rains it pours. It looks like my ex-roommate and I are going to be taking our recent landlord to court, who claims he never got our move-out notice on time, even though we have prove we did.

I BETTER be getting some humungous karma cookies later this year, z'all I'm sayin'.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 22 February 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a job interview the other week, and I did really well so I was fairly confident I would get the job...only to find out yesterday that they've hired someone else. I feel like a complete idiot for ever getting my hopes up, and just cannot handle the prospect of working here any longer. Sorry if that sounds whiney, I just don't know what to do right now and needed to vent.

i'm totally with you, nicole.

2 interviews 2/3 weeks ago – thought i did great. was suppost to hear back from the one i really wanted to work for over a week ago (i had really great expectations after the interview & freelance work went so well). i've called them and got the 'we're still considering our options, but you're still "in the mix"'. in the mix¿¿¿ i need a some cash coming in like you wouldn't believe. "in the mix doesn't do me alot of good. so it's back to the job boards again for yours truely.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 2 June 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole - it's not worth getting worked up about, no matter how bad your job is (trust me; I've had around 30 or 40 jobs, most of them lousy) . Take comfort in the possibility that that job might well have been as dreary. The fact you got to interview stage is positive in itself, and it's best to give yourself a gold star for that and move on. At least you're trying to get out - you'd be amazed at the number of folk I've met over the years who hate their job but stay put because it's comfortable, or they're too gutless to try and get out.

It might also be contacting someone on your interview panel or the HR department and finding out where they thought you were strong, and where you were weak. I've never done this, but friends have always found it useful, and they always had better jobs than me.

If you are desperate, depending on what line of work you're in, it might be worth approaching some agencies. They do a lot of permanent placement stuff as well, and frequently deal with employed folk looking to jump. As it's in their financial interests to place you, they'll prime you carefully for the interviews, give you advice about the kind of vibes you should give off so you'll fit the company profile. Make sure you might the right impression with the agency though - power dress, don't bitch about your current situation too much (always downplay the bad stuff, though you can allude to it) and look and sound confident, even if you don't feel it. Find a friend to do who'll do a practice interview questions with you and get them to throw you some deliberate curveballs. If you can get over the silliness of it, this WILL help. Oh, and never, ever give up.

Fight the power!

Jamie Conway (Jamie Conway), Monday, 2 June 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole, if what eventually happened to me is what is going to happen to you, relax and just keep on sending those resumes. I ended up in a much better place after all of the above misery, believe it or not.. and with the same company!
