Best food when you're stoned - ever.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a staunch advocate of the corn dog. Best fair food ever, with fried dough a close second.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Fried dough too? Jody, I heart you.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yum, corndog on a stick.

kephm, Saturday, 22 February 2003 08:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed (dali), Saturday, 22 February 2003 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

animal casing + deep fried + stick = the future

g.cannon (gcannon), Saturday, 22 February 2003 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

The only place in the UK where I've seen corn dogs on sale is Thorpe Park, and that was in 1990-ish. I bought one and it was ace. The last time I went there, they didn't have them. Bah.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Saturday, 22 February 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

They don't have them in England!!! My god. I had no idea. So sorry.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 22 February 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

what are they made of?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 22 February 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Dogs and corn, mostly

the veggie counterparts made by Morningstar are heaven.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 22 February 2003 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

They have to be drenched in mustard. Sonic has them 2 for 99 cents right now. There's a sonic two doors down from me. Yum.

b-but I *walk* to the Sonic. That counts for something right?

Aaron A., Saturday, 22 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I ate one once, in England. It was disgusting - maybe that's just English ones.

If they're deep-fried, they'd definitely go down well in Scotland. I mean, deep-fried *anything* will sell here. This is the country that invented the deep-fried pizza, after all.

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm biased in favor of corndogs, analogs thereof, or anything with deep fried sweet cornmeal batter, of course, because my first objects of desire were the Hot Dog On A Stick girls. Mmmmm, visions of bright white, red, yellow costumes, funky hats, and tight tops with that busty motion of the girls mashing the lemonade inside the big clear plastic box.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Donut Bitch is OTM.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, the Hot Dog on a Stick girls work really hard for that lemonade, don't they? And their uniforms are like NBA player jerseys. It's like Hooters for the junior high set.

JBR OTM re: DB being OTM on the Morningstar Farm veggie corn dogs as well.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 22 February 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I've honestly never had one. I'm not sure why as I've certainly eaten my fair share of all manner of unhealthiness. Maybe I'll try those morningstar thingies..

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 22 February 2003 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I've also never had one, probably because when we went to the county fair my parents insisted that we go to the dining hall for dinner (whereupon we would sit down and order fried chicken. That's healthy eating.)

JBR: By fried dough do you mean funnel cakes?

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 23 February 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I love my junk food, I do, but corn dogs have always seemed just a step too far. I am afeared.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 23 February 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer chocolate covered bananas.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i still remember going to a fair as a little kid, where they had a stand that was selling corndogs. but the corndogs had flies buzzing all over the place, and my grandmother freaked out that i was event thinking about getting a corndog from such a place.

it has scarred me, 'cause even now i can't eat corndogs 'cause i always think they've had flies all over them.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

FRIED CHEESE ON A STICK!!!!!! YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Are corndogs anything like battered savs? Theyre just a saveloy on a stick dipped in batter and deep fried... it seems the same. I always did wonder what corndogs were. I thought they were some dodgy vegetarian hotdog made out of polenta.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought they were some dodgy vegetarian hotdog made out of polenta.

haha! corny dogs are weiners dipped in cornmeal batter and fried till golden brown. yum.

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, so they are like what we call battered savs. Only we dont use cornmeal batter, its just plain old white flour batter (like the stuff on fried fish). disgusting, but yum! Sometimes, the tip is dipped in tomato sauce also (usually at a fairground type place, and then theyre called Dagwood Dogs - don't ask me why). You have to eat 3 then go on a stomach-churning ride at the local show. If you don't puke, you are h4rdk0r, and all the girls will want you.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

ok that is not a cornydog. Just a flour dog. and the yellow mustard is U&K.

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had one corn dog experience, back when I was a vegetarian, and I was very drunk, and my friend was eating one, and I took a bite, and it was delicious, and I tried to forget it the next day. But the sensation has really never left me, though I've never had another bite since.

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

They are called pogos here. They are so school cafeteria!

Genevieve, Monday, 24 February 2003 02:55 (twenty-three years ago)

slutsky, get the morningstar kind! they are excellent.

school cafeteria: ugh. ours are all lasgana with a pound of grade f meat per serving and frito pie. ::shudder::

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, they call them Pogos here too.

And though I'm sure the Morningstar kind are excellent, I don't think introducing corn dogs to my already grease-reliant diet is such a good idea. Maybe once a year. Maybe on my birthday. Or maybe just the next time I get drunk around someone who's eating one.

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I have always baked my corndogs, if bought frozen - maybe not quite as crisp, but I prefer it to the frying. And since I don't eat pork, I really like the Morningstar brand - with ketchup!

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is incredibly frightening.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to love corndogs until I realized there's butter in the batter and the idea of butter on a hotdog disgusts me.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I think they're yucky.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Last time I think I had a real corndog I was about eight - Dad had taken my sister and me to a carnival and saw nothing wrong with feeding us two corngods (yeah, that's a typo, but I really like it, so I'm leaving it it for your enjoyment, too), followed by soda and ice cream and cotton candy, and then sending us on the rides while he went and hung-out at the beer tent. They paged him a while later, after my sister and I managed to lose the contents of our stomachs on several rides. Dad never took us to another carnival.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The only ones I've eaten in the past several years have actually been at the Texas State Fair, I think.

I wonder though, are Morningstar are better than Fletcher's ("Original State Fair Corny Dog") freezer-section version?

Aaron A., Monday, 24 February 2003 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

there is a "store" in the olympia mall called "circus time" which sells corndogs, cotton candy, etc. it is seedy and frequented by toughs

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:56 (twenty-three years ago)

there's an olympia mall?!!! utopia shattered!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 24 February 2003 06:37 (twenty-three years ago)

they horrify me.

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 24 February 2003 06:39 (twenty-three years ago)

the seediest mall evah! possibly with the worst chinese food i've ever eaten

I haven't seen yr hot dog thread yet Sarah, but when I find it I'll be sure to contribute!

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 24 February 2003 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
Best stoned food ever? Possibly. All I know is that I'm drunk and would stab my mother with a rusty screwdriver for one of these. Yeah, that bitch hordes them all for herself.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 31 May 2003 08:29 (twenty-three years ago)

*completely glosses over oops' post*

I *big heart* corndogs from Sonic and from the Weinerschnitzel. Esp. the Weinerschnitzel, because they have a special meal deal there containing two corndogs, fries, and a drink, and sometimes they give you a coupon that says if you order three meals you can get three free desserts (perfect for our three-person family!). Interestingly enough, I really can't eat the corndogs that come prepackaged because they lack the crunch of the fresher ones. Also interestingly enough, I once tried a corndog at a large flea market near the outskirts of town, and not only was it a completely clean operation but the corndog was good AND didn't give me any stomach trouble!

school cafeteria: ugh. ours are all lasgana with a pound of grade f meat per serving and frito pie. ::shudder::

Off-topic: My school cafeteria memories are odd. Either I got really good food from cafeterias that were later found out to be in places that should've been torn down ages ago (and the food made me feel sick a couple of hours later), or I got really awful, greasy food from cafeterias that got near-perfect scores from the health department and thus at least didn't make me feel nauseated afterward. And now you know why I brought my own lunch with me pretty much every day of my grade/high school existence. :)

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 31 May 2003 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

For me Dad's Goodie Rings cookies are the best food for when I'm stoned, but corndogs are so fucking good. Almost the only reason to go to a fair for me. DDG was right: yellow mustard: U & K.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 31 May 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

When Dave and Kurt lived together, all they ate were corndogs.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 31 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

There's no such thing as Grade F meat. The highest is Grade E and all it means is the cow was more than 8 years old when it was slaughtered.

Stuart (Stuart), Saturday, 31 May 2003 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"Highest" as in "Lowest"

Stuart (Stuart), Saturday, 31 May 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Corndogs + HP sauce = god-food.

Veggie corn dogs are excellent but lack that... seediness that comes from eating actual meat on a stick. Like a Viking would eat if Vikings ate meat on sticks.

NB The Viking is also what makes Skullsplitter beer so great--that and its 8-point-something alcohol content.

adam (adam), Saturday, 31 May 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

hp sauce??

I failed in getting Gareth a corndog while in TX. We did have slushes from Sonic though. But he left his at the top of Reunion Tower.

That Girl (thatgirl), Saturday, 31 May 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think HP sauce is commonly known as "brown sauce." At least that is what my Anglophile girlfriend calls it.

'splain loocee

oops in a luna stylee (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Awww man. They take this little hot dog, and they put it INSIDE A TATER TOT WHICH HAS CHEESE IN IT (supposedly, I could never tell). So it's a hot dog, right. AND it's a tater tot.

You cook a mess of those up, you salt em up good, you put some Tabasco and ketchup on the side -- or sriracha and ketchup -- or McIlhenny ketchup -- oh man. When I could still find it, I called it The Perfect Food. ("Hey, they got any Perfect Food in that aisle?" "Nope." "Fuckers blew my weekend.")

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Find them and find them NOW - and when you do, call me. NOW.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think they make them anymore! I haven't found them in nearly a year, and believe me, I've looked. Ore-Ida made them -- they used to be next to those bagel pizza things.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, that sounds good. If you're really ambitious I suppose you could make them yourself, but that kinda defeats the whole 'perfect food while you're stoned' thing.

Pizza Bagels! Now I know what i'm gonna eat...

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

... that looks strangely good. But I'm wary. If it's a good bagel, the texture is all wrong for something wrapped around a hot dog (by way of contrast, see: TATER DOGS. Google confirms they are no longer made.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i had an intense corn dog craving the other day, but was dissuaded by the fact that it was 3 a.m.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

This is not exactly a corndog, but I have this dream of taking a hot dog, rolling it in hamburger, wrapping it in cheese, then coating it in some kind of corndog stuff and frying it up. Is this disgusting? I mean, I don't care if you think it's disgusting. What I really want to know is what kind of bready coating to put on the outside.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)
