Theme Parties - C or D?

Theme Parties - excuse to dress up and have some fun in the house of a friend of a friend OR just another piece of stress to pile upon the already stressful situation of social gathering.

Also, what to wear to a 50s theme party? And who has 50s theme parties anyway?

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

A "Fellini's Satyricon" theme party might be interesting.

Skottie, Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

We once had a multiple flat theme party, with about six flats taking part, each one with a different theme and 'punch'. The best of these was the one which feautured kahlua milkshake. I forget the theme itself. I was dressed as a pimp, surprisingly.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

The Primal Scream Theme.

JeremyZag, Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Our rock party was a huge success.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Rock party, now that's a theme. Finely defined parameters, enough obvious choices and enough leway for not-so-obvious choices to be understood. A 50s party - what can you go as? Amerikuhn Dad or Amerikuhn Mum. Jeez. Well.

Nothing happened in the 50s.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

you could be a greaser, wear black and a leather jacket

H (Heruy), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Sporting icons is a good one.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

How do you sport icons? Do you have to attache those russian religious objects to your person in an artistic and compelling matter? Over and out.

Skottie, Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I get *very excited* about dressing up. I love theme parties...

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a P party once. It was just an excuse to dress up as a prostitute really, but did bring punks, peasants, pixies, pimps, princesses and a Pippi Longstocking together as well...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I think my problem is that I have no imagination.

There's also the last day at school worry - how many of these people are going to be in costume/in uniform - so that if you go in costume/uniform are you going to be the only one there?

It is a minefield.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

they are classic. the trick is to make the theme such that it is quite easy for people to fit it.

Great theme parties I have been to:

i) a Vicars & Tarts PLUS Sailors & Slappers party (many of my friends did not actually need to dress up for this one)

ii) a Velvet Underground party (essentially everyone wears black jeans, black poloneck and if wraparound shades if you can be arsed)

iii) a French party (in which we all had to be French in some unspecified way)

iv) a Beatles party

v) a superhero party (I went as The Midnighter)

and many more.

At some stage in the future I want to host a Spinal Tap party. Wow, spandex!

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:44 (twenty-three years ago)

In Sydney we had:

Tarts and Vicars
Fantasy and Fetish
Stars of the Silver Screen
Uniform
James Bond
(and the obligatory) Sixties

Theme Panties - C or D?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara, have you been to everywhere in the world?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara, have you been to everywhere in the world?

Nowhere near it, I'm afraid. I've lived in Australia and seen a lot of Asia. Closest parts of Europe pretty much covered too. Theer is so much more to see and so little time (money)...

Theme Panties - C or D?

Most girls already have these, I should have thought i.e.

I'm Going to Score Tonight Pants
I Feel Fat and Need Some Tummy Support Pants
Damn I'm Going To Show That Bloke How Sexy I Can Be Pants
I'm Going To The Doctors And Must Not Seem Like A Ho Pants
Potential For Communal Changing Room Experience Pants

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

My mate had a "come-as-a-tube-station" party. His costume was normal clothes + rusty garden gate (Aldgate) and his girlfriend carried a hinge about (Moorgate). High Barnet, Monument, Barking, Angel and Parsons Green were also done, although I'm bloody glad Cockfosters wasn't.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

There was the Call of Chthulu roleplaying game party once...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Toga, Toga, Toga!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

We had one once in college, "Your Favorite Meat Bi-Product Party" I went as Beef Jerky.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, we had a Beach Party too and everone had to arrive in beachwear.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

That's by-product, Chris. I mean, ew.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

ah whatever, it was cool seeing chicks dressed up as spam.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SICK AND WRONG.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

A few years back, Cprek threw a swing party that was OFF THE HANDLE! People in retro-retro 20s/30s garb, flapper girl dresses, zoot suits, people doing the charleston...yet with modern updates like a stereo with a subwoofer and a keg and electric lighting and WOW!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been invited to a Flapper party.
Are these the Togas of the new millenium?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

1920s I'd have thought.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

There's something endearingly ILE about that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Toga, Toga, Toga!

Has anyone here actually gone to a toga party dressed in a toga? My friend had one with about 200 people in her loft, but there were only three togas, a couple of roman-legionnaire outfits, two naked black men, and one momus.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 February 2003 08:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Halloween is the only theme party I bother with any more. Last time I put on my loudest shirt, stuck pictures of Paul Newman and Steve McQueen to my shoulders and went as the Towering Inferno.

Al_Ewing, Friday, 21 February 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Slobs & Snobs (some people come wearing very expensive clothing and monocles and stuff, generally looking very British. And other people come wearing ratty torn up tank-tops or barrels) is classic

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

My Latin club had a murder mystery dinner last weekend, we made up characters and some people dressed up. It was pretty awesome. It took a long time to plan and write, though.

Maria (Maria), Saturday, 22 February 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

down here, generally only women dress up for theme parties. it annoys me. our flatwarming is going to have a glam theme - i'm so excited, getting to be marc bolan for the night!!!!!!!!!!!

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 22 February 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

oooh! that is a GREAT theme.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Wah! You must take pictures.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The glam party is going to be sooo great.Yesterday The Futurians worked out the song we are going to cover for it - singwithme "Dr Who-ooooooooo! Dr Who". I always get very excited about theme parties. Best theme last year was die-nasty/dynasty. It is hard to get dunedin boys to dressup.
