Is it a mis-remembering of the line from 'Space Oddity': "Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare"?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Its a mishearing of:
"Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare"
Lyric from Space Oddity.

Sorry Mark.

Damn Jerry.

It's from the 1999 Oscar ceremony, as spoken by the presenter, immediately before awarding the statuette to Sir Judi Dench.

Skottie, Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a joke deliberately and hilariously based on that v.well-known line

where was the joke made?

(space oddity b4 anyone posts is deliberately and hilariously based on a movie by kubriXoR)

(skottie i don't really understand yr banter but the joke is def older than that anyway)

i am the supreme being and not entirely dim s (mark s), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Every time I hear the beginning of "Reel Around The Fountain" I always think "CURSE YOU FATHER TIME" up until the "slap me on the patio/I'll take it slowly" line, where the mental image of Father Time buggering 12-year-old boys becomes so absurd that I start giggling.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark, you just started this thread to get my attention. Haven't had the chance to look at the Buffy thing (too busy arguing about Kuhn), but I will.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And Mark, I assume that you're asking this question to see if we know the answer, not because you yourself have forgotten. If otherwise, let me know.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

And it wasn't a joke originally, it was a genuine mishearing (or at least that's what the mishearer claimed 21 years after the fact).

"i love it when jel gets home!!

I just choked on my tea!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, it was Karla Mallette, who misheard the lyrics at age 14, which I'm guessing was 1968 because I think she was about my age, but I could be wrong about that (it would mean that she heard the song right when it came out - which I suppose is possible given that Detroit radio was probably exploratory in the late '60s - rather than four to five years later when the song finally hit in the U.S. spurred by the minor success of Hunky and Ziggy). I just did a Google search for her (because I remember her as being sexy and intelligent, as you would figure her to be given that she's someone who dares to read captions) and found someone by that name who is a Medievalist, though I don't know if it's she.

When I first heard "Space Oddity" I thought it was by Procol Harum.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Why would jel pop a muffin on his brassiere?

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Look, it's the scariest Bowie pic ever!

Too right! Bowie as Carole Channing. Or vice versa.
