For their theology, for their ideas, for their whacked out names, (i'm looking at you Ulrich Zwingli)-who do you like, who do loathe.

I sort of want an honest discusssion here, I dont know anything about lots of them and have a distinct distaste for most.

I'm totally with you on Zwingli. Also search, though not exactly in the same group, Count Zinzendorf, whose work is scandalously out of print in English.

wasn't Ulrich Zwingli a perv of some sort?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 21 February 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

how so ?
also the phrase wasn't Ulrich Zwingli a perv of some sort? could only appear on ilxor.

You mean:

Calvin
Luther

I'm not up to par on my church history, but I think the reason many people dislike these people is because they are brutally honest to a harsh degree. This doesn't sit well with people. Their main focus was knowledge of truth, and it was not being kind and peaceful.

also they were bastards

reform Christian doctrine beliefs:

*Sola Scriptura - Scripture Alone
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - II Timothy 3:16,17

* Solus Christus - Christ Alone
Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me." - John 14:6

* Sola Gratia - Grace Alone
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no-one can boast." - Ephesians 2:8,9

* Sola Fides - Faith Alone
"For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." - Romans 1:17

* Soli Deo, Gloria - To God Alone Be The Glory
"For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory for ever! Amen." - Romans 11:36

I think the state of theCatholic church at the time of the reformation was pretty bad (kind of like many American, both Protestant and Catholic churches now).

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

what do you think that the parrells are ?

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 21 February 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

search Luther for writing "A Mighty Fortress"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 21 February 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

friend of mine goes nuts over Luther. He especially likes "Table Talk" (?? so search that if there is such a book) Apptly Luther came to some important conclusions while on the commode. Friend: "this is a man who takes COSMIC SHITS."

g.cannon (gcannon), Friday, 21 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"what do you think that the parrells are ?"

Maybe a lack of concern for what really is important, making religion about things it really isn't about. A reformation is a way to simplify and get rid of all the extra parts that are not needed. It seems to be a similar situation today.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 22 February 2003 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

That is there is too much in Churches that is not Christianity and Christianity tends to take a lesser position. Just like at the time of the reformation where there was selling of indulgences and other added aspects that were not too biblical.

I retain a sneaking admiration for some of them as revolutionaries who dared to stand up to a corrupt and powerful Vatican. Overthrowing Rome?s influence in large parts of 16th Century Europe was no small historical achievement.

I?m a Protestant apostate and have a vague impression Catholicism is a slightly more human-friendly version of the Christian faith, especially when contrasted with the heavy gloom of Calvinism.

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Jan Hus! Thomas Wycliffe!! and the Lollards and Levellers!!!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 22 February 2003 07:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't respond to the thread about Calvinism because I hate Calvinism so passionately that I can hardly discuss it. Everyone (since Adam's fall) is born incapable of choosing good, without God's grace. Because of this, everyone deserves to go to eternal torment, even though they are, by nature, incapable of not sinning. God chooses to save some, but not all. God lets generation after generation of souls be born, only to have to suffer eternal torment for the sin that results from a nature they are incapable of doing anything about on there on. God is SO good. I don't "know" if it's true or not, but it's one of the most horrible worldviews I have ever encountered.
