Gilles Grimandi (still good?)

Gilles Grimandi (currently of Arsenal) has been signed by my local club, the Colorado Rapids. I guess its pretty tough to get playing time at Arsenal, but apparently he also turned down an offer from Middlesbrough to come here.

So can anyone tell me much about this guy, is he still any good?

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Saturday, 22 February 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i wondered what happened to him!

he never really made it at arsenal, but he was a useful squad utility player i guess, and arsenal are a very good side indeed

how old is he now?

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 22 February 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He doesn't loaf, and effort makes the difference for foreign players in MLS.

Except Valderrama, of course. I watched him for an entire game when he was at Tampa, and he never moved faster than a slow jog, and only left the vicinity of the center circle four or five times. Yet his career dragged on and on, as you know.

He's 32, which isn't that old considering this guy is 42:

Tell me about it. Valderrama played with the Rapids the last few years, I think he finally retired. He's not listed on the new roster.

You're right he just stood there and told everyone else where to go, but he often made great passes (when he wasn't taking too many touches and giving the ball up).

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Saturday, 22 February 2003 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

they'll be signing Roger Milla next

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 22 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

where are these guys now?

George Weah (AC Milan...but did he actually join Man City not too long ago?)
Andrei Kanchelskis (Man Utd)
Ilie Dumitrescu (Tottenham)
Anders Limpar (Arsenal)
Emerson (Middlesbro)

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

last i heard emerson was playing for tenerife, dumitrescu went to mexico, kanchelskis just moved last week actually, but i cant remember where to

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 23 February 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Limpar = playing in Sweden, iirc for Djurgarrden or someone like that, one of the lesser teams in the Swedish league.

Emerson is at Deportivo I think, he went there after a year at Tenerife.

Gilles Grimandi is a dirty little shit though, full of hair-pulling and nipping little tricks.

chris (chris), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

How do you really feel about him, Chris?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

When Brirish teams first played in Europe they were warned about the continental style, designed purely to wind you up and get you to retaliate and thusly, sent off, That ring permed git is perfect embodiment of that spirit. And I don't particularly hate Arsenal either. Ask a Spurs fan about him!!

chris (chris), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrei Kanchelskis is playing for Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia. He went to Southampton before that after spending large amounts of time keeping the subs bench warm at Ibrox.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate Arsenal but like that 'spirit' that Chris identifies. Kinda like one of my favourite tricks: when waiting for a corner, place your jumping-spring foot on top of the player you are marking's foot (either) to curb his ability to jump. Classic. Jeez. Whoops. Blimey.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Cozen, never play football against me, I'll get sent off.

Ailsa, didn't Kanchelskis get into trouble while at Rangers for taking the piss out of a defender after coming on as a sub in a cup game, going round and through him about five times? Maybe against Dundee?

chris (chris), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

What Cozen doesn't realise is that in football with your mates from college and no ref, people who do that get retribution tackles put in on them at a later stage. One of my friends who is particularly ace at football was singled out as a danger man last year and I think he regretted taking part afterwards, bless his bruised legs.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, yes, that rings a bell, but I can't remember who against. This will be the same Rangers who got all huffy when Bobby Petta did it against them...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

and let's face it, if you can get skinned by Bobby Petta, you must be shit!

chris (chris), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha, I don't do it with friends. (I play football with ex-boxing B&S frontman => it would end in tears. My tears.)

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 23 February 2003 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

There was one incredibly embarassing point in the 1999-2000 season when Gilles Grimandi had scored more goals than David Ginola. My Gooner flatmate at the time made a point of mentioning this at least once a day.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 February 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

wasn't Ginola at Villa then? suddenly it all makes sense

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope, that was his last season at Spurs.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever happened to Jason 'he's got a piiiiineapple, on his head" Lee?

does anyone watch Soccer AM on Sky Sports on Saturday mornings - they have a 'Whatever Happened To Johnny Foreigner' feature where they reveal where a foreign player who had a brief stint in the Premiership limelight a few years back is now - perhaps Grimandi has already been featured

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Jason Lee's at Peterborough.

This fact and similar brought to you from http://www.soccerbase.com

Tim (Tim), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

using the internet to verify footy trivia = cheating at the game of men

zemko (bob), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

This, however, is Jason Lee we're talking about, and therefore has very little to do with the game of men in the first place.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Trivia one-upmanship outside confines of pub quiz (or similar) = game of men = massive dud.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah yeah it's all about the game isn't it. go find me franz carr and see if he's retired

zemko (bob), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

of course REAL men are all about the Transformers trivia eh zemko?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

all trivia is valuable, kids

zemko (bob), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Knowling where Kwame Ampadu's playing now without checking = dud (I know, obv).

Knowing funny Kwame Ampadu stories = classic (I have none, obv.)

"It's all about the game" = abt as far from my view of football as it's possible to get.
