I will happily consider anything that doesn't involve rooting around in Tonya Harding.― Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, February 24, 2003 6:36 PM (12 years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Thought the film was passable--a good 20 seconds of the only Violent Femmes song I can tolerate, a pretty good performance by whoever plays Gillooly (when older, recounting what happened, he looks like Chuck Eddy), and the first triple axel was kind of exciting. It's not great camp, and it's not especially insightful about whatever all of that might have meant. (There's a lingering shot of a Reagan poster at one point, practically begging you to make a connection--weird, because Harding is anchored to the Clinton moment, chronologically and every which way.) Allison Janney's acclaimed performance seemed very obvious.

It's not great camp
i was wondering, cos it seems like it would be heavy on the 90's kitsch. a friend and i watched her dancing to Jurassic Park theme recently and it was amazing and beautiful and silly all at once. it was like pure camp. it was lovely. do they show this in the film?

“Tonya Harding” is the title of a new and quite lovely Sufjan Stevens song (“This world is a bitch, girl,” it goes. “Don’t end up in a ditch, girl.”
a quite lovely song that casually blames her for "cheating" and calls her "Just some Portland white trash"
reading this i def feel for her getting exploited by everyone even Obama

If you shut it off you probably missed the to-camera “YOU PEOPLE are the real abusers” which, I had to admire the brass balls - this movie is gonna tell me off for attempting to enjoy its story? This movie?! Like maybe if you weren’t constantly pitching at the level of “haha the fat guy is always eating, classic fat guy”

story would have been better served by a documentary but I hope TH made some scratch from it. She def earned my sympathies despite the clobbering style of the movie.

Planewatched this and yeah it's patchy...but the archive footage at the very end of actual-Tonya landing the triple axel was thrilling and emotional and the whole movie kind of justified itself as a build-up to that. What was even the point of the journalist character?
