What is an A level and can I eat it?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

you can't eat it but it eats you if you're not careful.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Advanced level.

*mumble mumble*

I did not fail any but I got a C in Spanish and think I could have done better and not ruined my stupid life by fucking it up made some different life choices.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I failed maths, which (possibly) turned out to be a good thing in the long run but was horrific in the short run. "Short run"?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

A english
C spanish
E history
!

zemko (bob), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Will someone please transfer British levels into North American Grade 12/13 system?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

You do them at the end of Y13, ie; when yr 18.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

we have higher grades instead of A levels.

I failed maths one year [got a D] and passed it the next year [got an A].

RJG (RJG), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I got three out of fifty on an economics mock today. ulp.

thom west (thom w), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Maths - U
Art - D
General Studies - disqualified
Physics - thrown out halfway through

*oooh* the memories of six form life. barf.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Never even got as far as the exams. Education is for squares, man.
(I did get go back and get a degree a few years later tho')

Simeon (Simeon), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

In all my A-level classes (or "Advanced" or "Advanced Placement", depending), I generally made good enough grades to get on to the next one, and my teachers always had the exact same comment: "a delight to teach, does not work to full potential" for years and years.

I liked English classes, 'cause rather than keep up with all the stupid busy-work, I just turned in the major papers and got nothing but "A"s on those. I only failed classes when my grade relied on my doing all the retarded busy-work, nightly repeat-this-over-and-over-again type redundant homework BS, which unfortunately was very often.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I took AP classes and IB classes. Do those count? I did pretty good in most of them (with the exception of IB AP Chemistry IV- yikes!), but I sucked when I took the real placement exams. *sigh*

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Never understood the point of IB, since I had my heart set on UCLA (and lo and behold, etc.). AP I did enough of and passed on a few things, thank heavens.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a B and two C's.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i failed sociology. passed music technology (so i got tha skillz, yo).

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't fail any, but I'm still peeved at my B for Spanish. Lengua damnada.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I dropped out of sociology half way through the second year because I just couldn't do a project. I still got a D-grade AS though (I failed the retake too).

Graham (graham), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I failed Physics. Proper fail, not even an E. I couldn't have cared less though as I already had unconditional offers for all the universities I had considered anyway.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Failed French A-Level (ungraded) but like Ailsa, didn't give a toss as I'd already been accepted by my chosen university. Someone in my Sociology class hated the subject so simply wrote their name on the exam paper and nonchalantly walked out after two minutes, declaring "piece of piss".

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

To translate vaguely for Americans: people generally take from 2-5 A levels, and these largely determine what university you can get to. You won't get on a normal degree course with less than 2 grade Es, and that will hardly get you in anywhere. You'd need two Ds or some such to get in most lower rank places, two Cs or more for a decent uni, 3 grade Bs for a top ten one, and two thirds of those at Cambridge have at least two As and a B.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Unless you are in Scotland in which case you can take the same amount of (or possibly more if you really want) highers which are easier than A-Levels (I actually got a B in higher Physics), then stay on and do Sixth Year Studies which are a bit nearer to A-Levels. Unless you get out of the state education system in which case your school lets you do a combination of highers and A-Levels and take them whenever you are ready for them - thus giving you the means of comparing which is easier. Like I got an A in my Higher Maths before I even sat my O-Level. Which was weird. GCSEs are piss easy though compared to O-Levels (I was the right age to get both inflicted upon me).

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 24 February 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

There are conversion figures of sorts at UCAS's website. A Levels and Highers and various other UK quals. They're all on one tariff score system now, to try to help universities understand.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 24 February 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the difference between Alevels and Olevels?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

In swinging terms or educationally?

If the latter, we take several O Levels (10 in my case) at about 16. Then we spend two years studying fewer subjects for A Levels (I took 5, but 3 is most common).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

And in swinging terms? :)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Presumably only British swinging, I guess, since no one outside Britain knows what O and A levels are. They are statements of keenness (with an implication of skill too), made by women or gay men, on Oral and Anal sex.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I got an E for art and I thought I was dead good, heh heh. Cringe madly now if I look over the stuff I did. Still that's what happens to you if you're stuck in a room full of wankers wearing black polo necks and making sculptures out of Coke cans. Horrific.

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I failed Spanish and Maths (pure & stats) I passed General Studies and scraped through English Lit. They were the worst 2 years of my life. The sooner they scrap A-levels the better.

celeste (Celeste), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't fail any Highers but they're easier than A-Levels as we've discussed; then I did 3 SYS's (are they much like A-Levels or harder?)and pissed about and did almost literally no work and got C (Computing) D (Maths I) E (Maths II).

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i failed History and barely passed the other 2, still got a degree tho heh heh, i love this land

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)
