In praise of unbridled avarice, DVD-style

Said because, partially due to happiness over my dad's went-without-a-hitch surgery, partially because the local Wherehouse is closing down and having a massive clearance sale, I went to said Wherehouse and indulged. I now have:

Hedwig and the Angry Inch -- heard enough about it
Resevoir Dogs -- 10th anniversary aren't-we-wonderful edition (Mr. White cover, natch)
The PowerPuff Girls Movie and two of the TV episode collections
A Star is Born -- Judy Garland restored-as-much-as-possible version
Krull -- pure nostalgia, this and The Cannonball Run describe me in the early eighties killing youthful time on HBO...what gets me is that the Krull DVD is a total jam-packed special edition with commentaries and things and all
Waiting for Guffman -- finally...I've never seen this, you know.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan -- Director's Edition -- heh heh heh. At long last, "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!" in pure digital format. ;-)
Hairspray -- and it's got John Waters and Ricki Lake dishing in the commentary, it's gotta be great
Enter the Dragon -- sad thing is, I've seen the parody in Kentucky Fried Movie all these years, but I've never seen the actual thing itself!
Depeche Mode -- Videos 86/98 + -- mega-happy special everything edition, and I'm counting the days until this year's later release of 101 on DVD at long last...I hope they show what happened to all those people on the bus!
Valmont -- thing is, though I enjoy Dangerous Liaisons and it's a much more faithful adaptation of the book, I like Valmont more in the end. Really wonderful ensemble cast through and through -- Colin Firth, Annette Bening, Fairuza Balk, Jeffrey Jones, Henry Thomas, Meg Tilly, Sian Phillips -- lots of grand humor and ultimately more enjoyable subtlety. Probably one of Forman's most underrated movies -- a chance to redo the time period of Amadeus but with a different focus.

Sad thing is I could have gotten more. And maybe I will.

Call me weird if you must.

I prefer the butchered version of A Star Is Born to the choppy "restoration." That said there is one really nice new scene in the 3-hour version.

Judy's little masterpiece: when she runs through "The Man That Got Away" with the band, and builds in confidence as it progresses.

Also the scene where she dashes around her and James Mason's house acting out the ridiculous dress rehearsal she had that day. Some pretty impressive camerawork here, too.

I am looking forward to all this 'new' stuff, so we'll see...

Like DUH! Fairuza Balk, ROWR!

It's true she's quite something.

"from Hell's heart, I stab at thee!!!!!!"

The memories!

Having now rewatched Krull, it's a better and worse film than I remember it.

Thing about Valmont I couldn't never deal with was Annette Bening's smirky performance. Drives me crazy.
