My occasional reads of The International Railway Journal has turned up this. An evacuated tube transit system, currently bidding to be the Florida high speed 'rail' system of choice.

According to the site The system could run at 4000mph and get you from NYC to LA in 45 minutes basically in one of those things that they use to send money to the back office in supermarkets.

Anyway. I want the woulds craziest ideas and inventions on this thread.

In the early days of the Tube in London they toyed with a pneumatic system to literally pump the carriages down the track. Problem was
a) Acceleration was far too high for passengers in the carriage
b) any stray passenger on the platform would be sucked down the tube afterwards.

There was of course brunel's atmospheric railway aswell where the carriages were propelled by means of a guide tube running between the rails. The seals never works as well as they should have done so it wasn't very sucessful.

Those darn lazy seals. Always flapping about and eating fish on the job.

Not to mention the smell.

Anyone remember when, a couple of years ago, someone came up with the idea of having 'slow' and 'fast' lanes for pedestrians on Oxford Street to reduce congestion and stress in the run-up to Xmas? That had genius written all over it.

any stray passenger on the platform would be sucked down the tube afterwards

Jubilee extension -style platform doors could overcome this problem.
