what's the difference between me and you?

minna (minna), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

You're a status-obsessed gloss-pop bling-bling go-getter little snot where I'm a representative of a more aware and cynical generation damaged by the Reagan/Bush years who learned to hate hippies and who found our voice via grunge and g-funk.

(Note: not true.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I'm too young to be either.

Generation AK: the hyperviolent Malthusian purgatory generation.
Generation AM: the self-affirmation generation (needed after generation AK).

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Cusps as always. It should be noted that these things are generally worth thinking about, though less in a social "everything changed / here's what they believe" way and more in the genuine statistical sense of demographics and "relative cohort size" actually making a huge difference in stuff like the economic success of a particular generation.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Amateurist, you forgot Generation AL: You could call us that (if we could call you Generation BETTY).

I fear (and possibly envy) the generation that took its name from Billy Idol's group yet decided Kurt Cobain was a better idol.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Generation Y has a higher disposable income and has launched a whole new area of marketing.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

being 23, I suppose that puts me in the cusp. I see some people my age acting like Xers, others acting like Yers. I usually assume it has to do with how soon you started watching MTV.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Generation PC - the kids that grew up with computers, are worried about saying the wrong thing and.. end up being police officers.

(this is weak)

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not gen y? but my sister is? how does this make sense?

minna (minna), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm hoping it has something to do with you and your sister being born at different times!

Please congratulate your parents for throwing off the trendy yoke of generational oppression and having their kids during an off bit.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Bucking the trend! Going against the grain!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

There's not many Gen X because ppl of childbearing age at the time all turned into feminists and had abortions but more Gen Y because p.o.c.b etc were all trying to get their last fuck sessions in before 'they' decided it was lethal and banned it

dave q, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there anything more tiresome and boring than people having conversations about Gen X? No, as evidenced by the incredibly dull daft self-absorbed conversation I am overhearing at work right now. Sorry for the revive, needed to complain.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

people having conversations about baby boomers

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

according to the article linked above, i JUST miss gen-x by a year (i was born in '76).

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

# Who exactly IS Gen-X? This question is in hot dispute. In the mid-1980's the Gen-Xer's had been labeled "Baby Busters", due to the low birthrates of the 1965-75 age bracket. Demographers noticed as early as 1966 that the "boom" was over, and began planning and budgeting downward for this massive change from the "boom" in births between 1946-1964. (These "Boomer" dates, by the way, have never been in doubt nor have they been doubted or tampered with by the media.) Today, however, many people lump those born in the years 1961-81 together. Why 1961? Despite being Doug Coupland's birthyear, it more likely began with the Howe & Strauss book "Generations", which used those years. The 1961-81 years are also being accepted and popularized by media like TIME magazine, which has used those years in a Gen-X cover story. The years 1965-79, 1964-82, 1960-1970, 1966-1977, and 1970-1983 have also been used in articles on Gen-X, but these all seem very arbitrary, and as you can tell, are all over the map, demographically.
# So, What IS a "Generation", anyway? A generation, loosely defined, is a group of people who can be, 1) demographically identified by biological trends and 2) have shared experiences. These are the basis for my belief that the 1965-75 timeframe works best, since the 1961-81 years do not reflect birthrates as well as the 1965-75 dates do, and it's really a mistake to try to see 40 year olds as having the same shared experiences as 20 year olds who barely remember who Ronald Reagan was!

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't your generation defined by your value sets and attitudes more than when you were born?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

yes. i feel quite gen-x. i don't know if gen-y has as well-defined a value set.

"The dictionary of marketing terms actually describes us correctly in the broadest sense, which only proves my point more clearly that a subversive form of political divide and conquer is under way on all generations that follow the greedy boomers. To say that my generation has a “high affinity for technology” is to totally disregard the hand we had in creating it.

We have been the ones to innovate against the mainstream press. We are the ones who understand the system the best because we grew up right along side it. That’s why I call my generation by it’s true name. We are The Programmers. And the operating system is badly in need of an upgrade."

Neo-con Gen X'ers taking off the gloves.

Andrew Sandwich, Saturday, 10 January 2009 08:29 (seventeen years ago)

what a self-obsessed dick.
he's right, but I don't think anybody under 40 needed that pointed out.

i like the bit where he says he learned values like individualism, competition and survival of the fittest *by playing video games* and thus he's more immune to brainwashing than other people

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 10 January 2009 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

yeah all the world of warcraft addicts I know are definitely immune to brainwashing

TOMBOT, Saturday, 10 January 2009 08:56 (seventeen years ago)

although imo this generation seems far more capable of absorbing and evaluating multiple positions on various issues than most of our parents ever were. when the nader vs norquist documentary gets made showing how america fucked itself into a hole post-nixon it's not going to be a bunch of boomers who produce it, that's for goddamned sure

TOMBOT, Saturday, 10 January 2009 08:59 (seventeen years ago)

negative capability? didn't f scott fitzgerald make a big deal of that, too?

that life is a puzzling challenge and you have to fight for your survival from the bottom up. You begin alone, with little or no help and minimal supplies and you don’t even know all the rules. And when you finally do reach the top it’s time to use every hard earned skill you’ve picked up along the way to beat the boss. The message is always survival of the fittest and and the experience of beating those old time games translates into a solid conservative worldview in the heart of many players.

hard-earned words of wisdom from michael mcgruther, winner of "Best Director Award at the 3rd. Annual Trenton Film Festival"

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 10 January 2009 09:02 (seventeen years ago)

yeah all the world of warcraft addicts I know are definitely immune to brainwashing

this comment is reductionist flip bullshit btw- all of my coworkers and friends who rock dark elf avatars by night or whatever are highly self-aware and knowledgeable about how the game does what it does for/to them. heavy interaction with technology does not mean subservience to said technology, hence I HATE APPLE thread for one and the dismal numbers of things like the PS3 or Windows Vista for two.

TOMBOT, Saturday, 10 January 2009 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

maybe soon we will be blessed with a "who moved my cheese?" style management book by mcgruther telling us about the business wisdom he picked up from video games

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 10 January 2009 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

haha I did not read past the first couple of sentences in the referenced post, are you fucking kidding me

TOMBOT, Saturday, 10 January 2009 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

I would like to have a more intelligent discussion of our generations' abilities and disabilities as a result of technological symbiosis instead of just fisking this imbeciles' blog post btw

TOMBOT, Saturday, 10 January 2009 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

actually can we just have a moratorium on wingnut fisking for all of ILX? I know this will ruin ethan's career but seriously, the greater good

TOMBOT, Saturday, 10 January 2009 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

multiple positions on various issues

"Remember those episodes of the Rugrats where the babies would mistake household objects for something more exciting, because they were ignorant of its practical real-life uses? e.g. a cardboard box becomes a fort, plungers are a type of medieval sword etc. Well that's what my generation is like still -- put us on a farm -- make us do manual labor -- and we'd feel like we're on a Goonies-style adventure."

Cunga, Friday, 5 April 2013 08:39 (thirteen years ago)

No, I don't remember that, because I am Generation X. My generation has its flaws but at least we're not still talking about the Smurfs.
