Guitar/Bass/Drum Magazines

Did anyone else read these shitty magazines? Does anyone read them now? IE, Guitar Player, Modern Drummer, etc.
I read them as a teen learning to play guitar, even had a subscription for a year or so, and I suppose they helped me technically, especially having guitar tab in addition to sheet music for the different songs you can learn to play. But when I look at them now, they just seem horribly sad throughout; the shitty songs they transcribe, the bands that no one cares about, the horribly sexist ads and photo spreads.
For a while I was planning to start a zine about learning to play different instruments, but with a more "free" attitude about the proper way to play and interviews with musicians that I actually found interesting, kind of like Tape Op but about playing, not recording, and less technical. But I am too lazy. If anyone wants to steal this awesome idea, they are welcome to it. Or if they want to help me do it.

I was always turned off by the horribly sexist ads, complete with scantily clad women who obviously were not representing women in rock. But, also, I have to confess I am turned off by the magazine WOMEN IN ROCK. I am just not very interested in what gear the latest nu metal band (or what-have-you) hypes. I will still flip through one at the bookstore if I see an interview with a band I really care about - Breeders or Smashing Pumpkins or Pixies, but I don't think there is a guitar mag geared towards me me me.
My favorite music mag is Venus and sometimes Nylon has a story on a new interesting music group, but I haven't found anything purely guitar-oriented that I enjoy.
I like to flip through my bf's Tape Ops, but I can't say that I always understand what I'm reading in there.

Oh, I don't understand most of what I read in Tape Op either.

The guitar magazines are laughable. I used to be into Modern Drummer, not so much anymore, but then again their interviews with jazz drummers are great, very well-done.

I remember weird things from these though: An interview with Mercury Rev where they talk about putting tuna under guitar strings and then letting a cat "play" while trying to eat the tuna and recording a guitar being dragged behind a moving car. "Alternative" must have been a hard phase for the guitar mag dudes.
