CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Underage drinkers account for one-fifth of the nation's alcohol consumption, a study says.

Is this greedy, or what?

Surely its because the US is silly and has a min. drinking age of 21 instead of 18?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

that'd only cut it to 10, though.

g.cannon (gcannon), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:27 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah let's keep those young lil' fuckers from cuttin' in on our stash! And about the weed they smoke. . .

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

That's nothing, though, a column I read today claimed that 30% of babies weren't fathered by their father.

30%.

g.cannon (gcannon), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Whose father were they fathered by?

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

shhh.

g.cannon (gcannon), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:59 (twenty-three years ago)

We're facing a moral crisis. A CRISIS, I tell you -- one fathered by political correctness gone mad.

At least 30% or the time.

I blame gothic punk kids who do school shootings.

And MTV video-games and their generation.

Also comics and hollywood liberals.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 08:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Drinking only one fifth was a slow night for me in high school.

Thank you, I'm here all week.

Yeah, damn those aliens. Taking over the world they are. Mulder was right goddammit!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I for one think it's a disgrace. Get that measly percentage up to at least 40% or bust! And I'm talking about the alcohol consumptionand the children fathered by aliens.

Skottie, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I hate people who leave 80% of their pint undrunk.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

80% of that 20% is represented by drunken frat boys (I know, redundant) drinking Bud Light. They can have it.

No One (SiggyBaby), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Whats the percentage of underage drunks who babies wern't fathered by their father???

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I probably drank a third or more of my expected lifelong intake (hopefully) of booze before I was 21. cheap wine, beer, tequila, gin, malt liquor - Jesus, I was a machine.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know about the rest of you, but I consider this a call to arms. This means that there are plenty of over-21 drinkers that are just not pulling their weight. Or drinking their weight, as the case may be.

cprek (cprek), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The same article (that I read this in) stated that 35% or so of US alcohol consumption was from adults drinking excessively (more than two drinks per day). Thus making over 50% of US drinking either illegal or generally considered unhealthy.

I'm not sure how I feel about this yet.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I've drank very heavily for about 15 years. The first 5 of those were illegal. I've been trying, and for the most part succeeding, to make myself into a 0-2 per day kind of person, because I don't want to give it up completely. But I can completely believe that 50% number Millar. I wonder how much of the under-21 figures is just 18-21 and how much is younger. Because the former group certainly consumes huge amounts of alcohol. Alcohol seems to be something that people either indulge in infrequently, or often to excess.

. Or drinking their weight, as the case may be.

They have cases of beer that weigh as much as a person!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

beer is people!!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I've been into bars less than 10 times since I turned 21 and could drink legally - somehow it just wasn't fun when the thrill of the forbidden was gone. And I don't even like the taste of alcohol (dark beers excepted).

Yes, it's just hillarious. I expected these type of comments. Did anyone see the studies on the extent to which alcohol does much more damage to adolescent brains than to brains in people who are out of their early 20's?

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 27 February 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

(Actually, I think it was rat brains and they were extrapolating, but. . .)

Thank you ILX for teaching me that any acknowledgement of the risks of certain pleasurable behaviors is inherently puritanical.

(Actually, I think it was rat brains and they were extrapolating, but. . .)

Well all right then! (Seriously, yesterday I sat through an FDA meeting during which one of the presenters discussed the issue of extrapolating data from rat studies to humans. I am so not looking forward to writing up the minutes for this meeting.)
