Schadenfreude: classic or dud?

For those who find actual revenge a bit vulgar, schadenfreude (per OED, "Malicious enjoyment of the misfortunes of others") is often the preferred option.

Tell us a recent instance of schadenfreude. And more generally: is it morally acceptable? Inevitable or avoidable?

I find the notion of feeling like this utterly repulsive and cannot understand how someone else's misfortunes can lift one from the mire.

Not recent, but great -- driving carefully in a severe snow storm in a little but snow worthy Toyota, being passed honkingly with obscene gestures by some jerk in a large SUV, and watching him wipe out and slide into a ditch before my very eyes.

(He was not injured, thus Schadenfreude was great.)

you're obviously not doing it right, lara.

I try not to but sometimes I do. I'm sure people laugh at my misforutunes so it's not as bad as thinking about, say, lighting someone on Fire.

From the links on the right: The trial of a husband accused of murdering his wife as they slept in a camper van has heard he killed her while he dreamt she was an intruder...Swansea Crown Court heard Brian Thomas, 59, of Neath, accepts he killed her but says he has a sleep disorder which had been triggered by "boy racer activity".

I dunno, I always kind of liked fuzzed-out indie slop-pop.
