20 miles maybe in mountainous terrain, but more like 40-50 on flat land.

In what period of time?

Some things, like foot-pounds, or person-hours, or miles-per-gallon, simply must be measured in complex units. In like wise, pedal excess must be measured in time-distance.

My london footrange is (in central line terms) chancery lane to either Liverpool st at a pinch bethnal green or Marble Arch.

Rurally foot 15-25 miles a day depending on terrain and load.

Tom is younger and fitter than me - if they were on one line, I'd take a tube three stops. Did last night, in fact - Oxford Circus to Embankment. Speed more than laziness. I'd walk if I weren't in any hurry.

Surely "3 tube stops" is a bit vague considering how much the distance between stops can vary. I'd not bother waiting for the train to get from Embankment to Covent Garden, but equally I wouldn't walk the two stops from Kings Cross to Finsbury Park.

My walk to work is about 40-50 minutes. If it was over an hour, I think I'd get the bus.
