If I had a friend with me:

Bubble Bobble

Otherwise:

Nethack

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Civ II with editor.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 February 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

If I had a friend with me: Sensible World of Soccer.

If not, Zelda: The Winds of Takuto.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 28 February 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Sonic 1 for Genesis- first game I ever owned. I never *did* beat it.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 28 February 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

most RPGS/Action-Adventure games seem to lack replay value. I can only replay them every couple years...

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Nethack, I've been playing the Falcons eye version - -http://falconseye.sourceforge.net/
For endless replayability it wins hands down.
My brother has just ported Rogue to run on mobile phones, I reckon it's a killer game for mobile geeks...

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 28 February 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

All Star Baseball

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Playing Rogue after Nethack is like masturbation after sex with a supermodel.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Sensible World Of Soccer or Sim City 3000

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 February 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

The new ISS Pro Evolution on PS1. It's the only one I play now, let alone on a desert island.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Civ II. Unless there's a really great Go program, but I doubt it.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Pong is Zen.

No One (SiggyBaby), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Vice City because I haven't played it yet and I know from GTA III that I'll love it.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

1942

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

kid chameleon for the mega drive

robin (robin), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Civ III over Civ II. My brother got that game a year ago, and you can't pull me away from it when I'm visiting.

cprek (cprek), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

The edition of Civ 3 I have doesn't have an editor - and I'm not sure it's internal structure is as fruitfully tweakable as C2. I am on the Desert Island for the long haul after all and I need to have something to do once I end up winning.

I do adore Civ 3 though - it has its detractors but I was v. impressed by its grasp of the mechanisms of history ("this pre-emptive war is all about oil!")

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Civ II over Civ III. CivIII was one step forward, then two steps back to CivI.

fletrejet, Friday, 28 February 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't think of anything Civ III loses compared to Civ II - apart from generally being harder. The spheres of cultural influence and resource changes and trading simplification are all excellent changes.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Civ II > Civ III but the AI in all of them is awful. And the history is bad, too! III's major selling point was having more than 8 civs.

g.cannon (gcannon), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The cultural infl thing was a good idea but didn't make a lick of sense re determining hard political borders.

g.cannon (gcannon), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Jon, you reckon getting a copy of Bubble Bobble for the NES is worth £8?

Sarah (starry), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

1£=$2.5USD?

20? maybe....

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

The cultural influence and new resource/trade concepts are the step forward. The two steps back is the combat system, which is similar to CivI in that you often had absurd spearman-beats-tank outcomes. This tends to make resourse acquisition less critical, since why bother getiing oil for tanks if you can do just a well without? This among avrious other badly-implemented features.

fletrejet, Friday, 28 February 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

What about a SNES for £32 with Super Mario? I could get Street Fighter 2!

*grits teeth*

WHEN I GET A COMPUTER I CAN GET EMULATORS. WHEN I GET A COMPUTER I CAN GET EMULATORS.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm my spearmen never seem to do well against tanks - I suppose the hit points system means that these kind of outcomes can occur.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

How the fuck did they get such an awful combat sytem? Have decades of wargaming given us no good systems?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

>WHEN I GET A COMPUTER I CAN GET EMULATORS. WHEN I GET A COMPUTER I CAN GET EMULATORS.

But emulators suck for action-games like SMB and SF2. On the other hand, they are a blessing for RPG and adventure games.

fletrejet, Friday, 28 February 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

You can hook real joypads up to pcs, btw

google around

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mean to rip on Civ too much b/c I love(d) it like a brother, but it's really just a build 'em wargame. It's made out to be this summary of the engine history or something, and it gets so much wrong. (But then asking that a computer game > Kapital is a bit much, I guess)

g.cannon (gcannon), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

as long as i have internet access from my island, Neverwinter Nights, please.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

>How the fuck did they get such an awful combat sytem? Have decades of wargaming given us no good systems?

Civ is a hybrid builder/war game. As such, it will and should not ever have the most sophistated combat simulation, because that would detract from the builder aspect of the game, and vice-versa. But the important thing that the combat should simulate correctly is the effects of technology. Tanks should decimate spearmen and musketeers and so forth. If not, there is far less pressure to compete technologically with other nations, which is a major aspect of the game. CivIII fucked it up. I can't calculate odds for civIII because I don't remember the exact numbers, but they were similar to CivI, where a group of spearmen (phalanx) behind city walls had about a 35% of destroying an attacking tank. In civII, a full-strength phalanx had an effectively zero chance of defeating a full-strength tank.

fletrejet, Friday, 28 February 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

tetris, natch. or mega man 2

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course, fighting wars is much less important in Civ III -- it is possible to win without ever firing a shot.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit. People already took Nethack and Mega Man 2.
Also: Resident Evil 3, the most underrated one.

Dan I., Friday, 28 February 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

manic miner, zelda:link's awakening or final fantasy VII

schnell schnell, Friday, 28 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

if with a friend: Gran Turismo 3
if solo: Civ III, even though I've never played it

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna say Vice City...although on a desert island I'd probably have far less demons to exorcise, and that's pretty much my main motivation with playing that game.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm stuck on Links Awakening. Bloody Zelda. The bit where he goes into a cave underneath the waterfall. Bloody bloody buggering... argh.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Counter-Strike

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Pulled out the SNES last night & took a marvellous trip to Donkey Kong World. Those games are dynamite.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm. Possibly Pirates! or more likely Diablo II. In Pirates you actually run the risk of your character adventuring too long. Diablo II has goals, but you'll never find EVERY SINGLE ITEM.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh man... Pirates.... I wish I had this working in my dos emulator... .oh fuck

shit!!!! i love it

Is Pirates Gold! worth digging up

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Lunatic Fringe screensaver game for Apple, Maelstrom, Zelda, Karate Champ!

Pirates Gold! is surprisingly hard to find as a free download, and then it's invariably buggy and the patches are hard to fine.

I'm loving Autoduel (all over again).

Aaron A., Friday, 28 February 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i would choose civilization, any version. it has been a favorite of mine for a very long time. how long, you ask? well, i remember being sad that i couldnt get the first version because it required 640k of ram and i only had 512k.
also, has anyone ever played "tongue of the fatman"? that would be a fun DIVG wth friends.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

tony hawk 4 san francisco EMB + pier 70 = yay!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i am going thru civ withdrawl reading this thread! would ne1 be willing to s*nd m* a f**e copy of c*v over AIM?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Zaxxon of course! I have a full-size Super Zaxxon in the back room. It is extremely heavy.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

2 words: Splinter Cell
an action, adventure, thinking and puzzle game all in 1!!!!!
and the super mario allstar hehe

rex jr., Friday, 28 February 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Chrono Trigger 0wnz you bitches.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 1 March 2003 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Diablo II, but only if I had BattleNet access. Otherwise, MAME with all the ROMs.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Saturday, 1 March 2003 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Pirates Gold! download: http://www.geocities.com/piratesgold1987/ - it's crashy as hell after the patch and unplayable without, but ever so pwetty...

For me: Graham Nelson's Curses. Never got anywhere with it, really ought to, combination of complete lack of talent at I.F, huge size of game, and hopeless dilletantism would consipre to stretch it over ten or more years to finish.

I'm told it's very good.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

RIVER CITY RANSOM

Second place - Chrono Trigger.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and possibly Terranigma.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone played Sim City 4 yet?

jm (jtm), Saturday, 1 March 2003 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

It looks like a beastly HD hog and a ram sink but...

REALLY REALLY COOL

jm (jtm), Saturday, 1 March 2003 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Toe Jam & Earl!! only if i had a friend. or maybe robotron 2084 if i didn't.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 1 March 2003 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)
