Too bad he's not anymore... His replacement just isn't as good and there's too many new agey-themed shows.
I've got a quite a few of the shows as MP3s if anyone wants copies.

My favorite show was when a guy who worked as a cook at McMurdo Station in Antarctica called him up out of the blue. Art was so blown away by a caller from Antartica, that he had him on for the rest of the show - eagerly grilling him about life on the ice, etc.
The other classic Art show was a couple of years ago when he was talking with a guy in Michigan who built a very high amplitude VLF transmitter in his house (the transmitter filled the entire house). The guy was convinced that ET would be listening in on VLF and so his mission was to broadcast his personal greetings. In the course of the interview, Art asked the guy what kind of messages he was broadcasting and he admitted that he was a big prog rock fan and was transmitting King Crimson's first album. Art asked what King Crimson was, and as they say... hilarity ensues.

his temporary retirement several years ago was based on some threats on his family but one must presume he's feeling safer these days.

In Memoriam: Ramona BellArt Bell's beloved wife of fifteen years, Ramona, died unexpectedly last night after an asthma attack. At present, the exact cause of Mrs. Bell's death has not been determined. It apparently took place during her sleep.
Until her death, Art and Ramona Bell had not been apart a day since they were married. Mrs. Bell had suffered from asthma for years, and took her normal steps to control the attack, which occurred sometime last night in Laughlin, Nevada where the Bells were taking a brief vacation. Ramona Bell was 47 years old.
For those who wish to offer their condolences, send cards and letters (no flowers, please) to:

BACK
NEW YORK (AP) -- Art Bell, radio's master of the paranormal and outward edges of science, will return to the microphone on Sept. 16 with a new nighttime show on Sirius XM Radio.Bell was one of radio's top syndicated voices in the 1990s before walking away from his nightly show in 2002 due to family issues. He worked occasionally after that but hasn't been on the air since Halloween 2010."I missed it terribly," said Bell, 68, whose weeknight show will air live from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET. Sirius is building a studio at Bell's rural Nevada home where he will work.A Sirius representative contacted Bell through social media a few months ago, leading to the formation of his show, "Art Bell's Dark Matter." He'll talk about things like UFOs, ghosts, near-death experiences and weird aspects of science. He'll do interviews and take calls from viewers.Scott Greenstein, Sirius XM president and chief content officer, said the show will be "uncensored, unrestricted, uncluttered and utterly unique.""There's probably more interest in the genre now than when I did it," Bell said. "When I did it, I was damned near alone."Bell was on some 500 radio stations nationwide and "quit when he was at the top of his game," said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers, a magazine that covers the radio industry.Harrison said Bell's subject matter has roots in old-time radio, and he predicted it will become popular once again in the coming years."He'll be looked at as one of the veteran, old masters," Harrison said. "He's the real deal when it comes to marching to the beat of a different drummer."There's also a potential rivalry with George Noory, who replaced Bell on the syndicated show. Bell isn't a fan, saying he considers Noory "not edgy enough." Noory's program is on later at night, so the two will not compete directly live.No contract terms were divulged.Bell said he's intrigued to learn the differences between satellite and terrestrial radio."It seems to me they are the next step in technology," he said. "I've always been a technological junkie. The mix of what they're giving me, the freedom that they're giving me, is priceless."

my dear dad (RIP) turned me on to Art. For some reason we were driving after midnight and he put the station on and it was John Zajac going on about the symbolic geometry and secret mathematical message of the great pyramid. He'd been listening to Art for some time (and is probably the only person I've ever heard of who bought a Grundig crank radio from the C. Crane Company). I was hooked from then until well after I went to college. Art was a total classic.

Dec 30, 1998. Art is forced to step in as reality cop in a literal fight to the death over the hyperbullshitics between Richard C. Hoagland and aggrieved astronomer Paul Doré in the concluding episode of the EQ Pegasi hoax. Best Art Bell story arc ever.https://fight.fudgie.org/search/show/ab/episode/19981230_Wed
What's interesting about shotgunning these episodes is seeing the internet slowly putting its thumb on the reality scale. That insane 1998 Hoagland vs Doré fight is fueled by the internet's early 1998 plutonium but the stress fractures first start here

Thanks so much! Much easier than using archive.org. Speaking of the internet, I remember writing this on another thread a few years go:
Thanks to a trove of old ’90s Art Bell episodes on Archive.org, I listened to a bunch of them while rewatching The X-Files last year. It was fun but tainted by the suspicion that if I googled a lot of these folks, they are probably now right-wing cranks. I mean, they were cranks back then, but the show/topics often had an apolitical air that made even government conspiracies a bit more fantastical in the vein of "Bigfoot is real" rather than "Dems are secretly sex trafficking children”. Fantasy, really.
The show does still evoke a bit of coziness to me, odd as that may seem given the subject matter. I remember how it felt to stay up late in junior high so I could hop on the internet while everyone was asleep and off the phone line, listening to the show and browsing X-Files fan sites and IRC.
