anthony, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Basic tags:

Paragraph break: <P>
Line break: <BR>
Bold text: <B>text</B>
Italics text: <I>text</I>
Website link (aka anchor tag): <A href="http://websiteURL">text that should be clicked on</A>
Email link: <A href="mailto:emailaddress">text that should be clicked on</A>

More detailed info can be found here.

I wonder if I can cheat and post in pretty COLOURS?

Hmmmm... how well have I remembered basic HTML, or will I look like a raving fool?

masonic boom, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's not that hard, even I mastered the (very) basics in a week. Believe me, that's something, computer coding (in all its forms) is something I'm not compatible with.

DG, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

for people that don't know any of that stuff , try this - when you see stuff that makes you go , Oh how do you do that?, you click on VIEW & then down to SOURCE. then you can see the java or html stuff laid out there & you don't even have to understand how it works, if you wanna steal stuff just cut/paste/replace text.
i only found that out recently , i hope it's useful to the few people who know even less than i do.

I never use HTML, so I'm just trying this out for this first time.

Bye.

Simple example of an HTML document.

A simple example.

This is a simple HTML document. This is the first paragraph.

This is the second paragraph. This is a word in italics. This is a word in bold. Here is an inlined GIF image: myimage.gif.

This is the third paragraph. Here is a hypertext link from the word foo to a document called "subdir/myfile.html".

A second-level header.

Here is a section of text that should show up in a fixed-width font (as if it were a computer listing or a verse of poetry):

        The cat in the hat
        fell to the ground and went splat.

This is a bulleted list with two items:

  • First item goes here.
  • Second item goes here.
This is the end of my example document.

Menelaus Darcy, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

you can't see it, because it's referring to a local file on Jeff's computer. it needs to be uploaded to a website, and referred to with an 'http://...' style URL.

Thanks. Kodanshi has just pointed this out to me in the ILM thread where I tried to use the image to pose a question. All I can say is this page is a bit misleading.

It was a music stave BTW, quite pretty on my screen.

Note that the img tag is an HTML extension that is currently only understood by NCSA Mosaic and not by most other World Wide Web browsers

Arrrr, I remember when it were nowt but mosaic round here and multicoloured horizontal rules were all the rage.

um, too must nesting star, you don't need half of those tables.

if you have a table containing only one tr containing only one td then it doesn't need to be a table.

if you have a table containing lots of trs each containing just one td then scrap that too and just separate the rows using p tags.

Let's say you want to post a photo, but you are unsure how large it will end up on the screen. What can you do to minimize the size?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

<img height=#ofpixels width=#ofpixels src="http://shania.com/lovemeformymusic.jpg">

where #ofpixels = the dimensions of the image you'd like to resize. maintain a constant ratio in order to reduce distortion.

gygax!, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

you can hand code the img tag and supply width=n and height=m attributes along with the src thing. make sure the width and height values are in the same ratio as the original image or it'll look stretched.

but this is bad practice - it means the entire image has to be downloaded (lots of data possibly) before the broswer resizes it (and browser image resizing isn't always that good, qualitywise). resizing it yourself and linking to new image is better.

(curse you gygax! 8)

sarah,

the pixels are 600 x 450 so you can resize it to 400 x 300 or 200 x 150:

<img height=400 width=300 src=http://feistycat.subtlehints.net/furball/lucycat4_big.jpg>

<img height=200 width=150 src=http://feistycat.subtlehints.net/furball/lucycat4_big.jpg>

for the love of god think when you start to code some shit. if it looks like a big old chunk of content might be something they want to dynamically display or hide, then keep it all in one table or something, do not break the "order" button from an item away from the item and mix it up in a table with a totally different item. This is dumb and shows no ability to think through problems. Also it makes me want to kick you.
