i don't get why Helo and Gaeta are off on Starbuck's mission - thought they were key personnel. it's as if the writers have got nothing for them to do for a while.

Yeah, I think you nailed it. I mean, why else would they put on all those other pilots (like... uh... that chick who got promoted to pilot last season).

But complete fanwankery GO: Helo has been pretty good buds with Starbuck, though they don't get that much screentime together, it's been established. And Gaeta is still probably hated in the fleet anyway since most people saw him as a collaborator, and maybe Starbuck's trying to make up for that whole "whoopsy, almost killed you in that barely legal tribunal thing!" But also he has a ton of experience in navigation from being in the CIC.

39,000 people left - how come still so many reporters?

Halfway through the first season on DVD and wondering the same thing. There's no sign of a visual media or newspapers and 48k people, why is the Presidential Press Corps rolling 20 deep?

milo z, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 21:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I think it gets explained in the first season actually. Weren't a whole bunch of reporters on Galactica for the de-commissioning? They never explain the whole medium (or how any sort of economy works in general), but I would presume that the weekly newsletter's get more important once the human race is down to 40K.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 21:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes, but each of them must report to unique news sources, right?

I've just finished season one of this, and while I'm enjoying it as a drama I don't think all of the sci-fi elements have been very well thought through. The world lacks coherence and consistency somehow, and much of the politicking seems quite simplistic. I also wish they'd curb the spiritual nonsense a bit.

I adore Gaius Baltar, however. I suspect he's partially basing his performance on Tony Blair.

Ok, two episodes into S3 now and it's kicking so much arse. S2 excellent as well, the first series is the weakest by a large margin. LOVING Dean Stockwell's performance.

You might want to check the thread started this season, although lots of complaints.

Christ but Lucy Lawless is aging well. Far hotter in this than she ever was in Xena.

lol watched razor thinking it was s04e1 d'oh; was thinking all the way through 'what a weird way to start season 4'

I do think that viewed as an episode rather than a side-story movie it was ok

cozwn, Monday, 21 December 2009 14:56 (fourteen years ago) link

still not watched The Plan yet

mdskltr (blueski), Monday, 21 December 2009 14:59 (fourteen years ago) link

The main girl's story is pretty predictable, but I liked the way it fleshed out some minor characters.

xpost re: Razor

Has the plan been aired in the States?

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Monday, 21 December 2009 15:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i dl'd it a while ago so presumably yes

mdskltr (blueski), Monday, 21 December 2009 15:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Cool, I'm going to get on that shit. Love me some John Cavill.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Monday, 21 December 2009 15:02 (fourteen years ago) link

The Plan was on DVD, not telly.

James Mitchell, Monday, 21 December 2009 15:03 (fourteen years ago) link

in the UK are the 'final season' DVDs just the second half of season 4? still got to work my way through its first half anyway.

I thought season 3 was rubbish, first time through, but re-screened it this past week and it's definitely stronger than I initially thought; pretty incredible reveal of four of the final five at the end

cozwn, Monday, 21 December 2009 15:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, the DVDs were split into 'Season 4' and 'The Final Season'.

James Mitchell, Monday, 21 December 2009 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link

dumm

cozwn, Monday, 21 December 2009 15:37 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought season 3 was rubbish, first time through,

The first four or five eps of S3 is Galactica's creative peak, IMO.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Monday, 21 December 2009 15:43 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah but there is a definite sag around the middle; as I say tho it's not as bad as I thought first time through

cozwn, Monday, 21 December 2009 15:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Actually now that you mention it, I'm struggling to remember what happens in that season post-New Caprica.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Monday, 21 December 2009 16:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Me too. Still haven't watched The Plan yet, because I fear it will be as disappointing as the finale.

oh god 'the plan'. i didn't get far with it but it is the absolute nadir of the whole thing.

seriously one of the worst resolutions possible

larry craig memorial gloryhole (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 21 December 2009 17:35 (fourteen years ago) link

ya i have the plan but it looks so bad i'm afraid it'll ruin my memories of the good seasons (cuz it shows them from "the other side" right?)

akira goldsman (s1ocki), Monday, 21 December 2009 17:35 (fourteen years ago) link

its a bunch of outtakes basically filling in a bunch of pointless details of the first half dozen or so episodes

larry craig memorial gloryhole (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 21 December 2009 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link

sort of. it's a mish-mash of deleted scenes, "from the other side" stuff, and... just pure crap. they upped the fx and portentous music budget iirc. i've pretty much wiped it from my memory.

i doubt it'll ruin the earlier seasons: it may as well be a fan video, if the final seasons have any fans.

the worst ever

akira goldsman (s1ocki), Monday, 21 December 2009 17:52 (fourteen years ago) link

i liked season 4 okay but i feel like they rushed through the really dope shit (the mutiny being a good example) and lingered way too long on the portentous shit and lee and starbuck's final scene was closer to marky mark having a chat with his dead mom in 'four brothers' than anything that belonged in BSG.

two months pass...

Avoided this forever having a very strong attachment to the original. Every short clip I saw seemed silly. When the mini-series/season one became available on Blu-Ray recently, I said what the heck and put it on my queue. Furious torrenting and 2-3+ episodes per day and a month later I am just astonished at how good it all was! I haven't felt like a kid in this way in a very long time. I kept expecting things to go downhill but I was purely riveted throughout and up to the final shot - maybe watching it all at once helped. Perhaps too much speculation leads to disappointment. I haven't devoured this much of a tv series in as short a time since I obsessed over Heimat/Die zweite Heimat.
