I don't claim to know all the facts, but I spent a few days there in January.

Pretty nice really. Relatively small so you can walk around it in a day if you wanted to. The lake is amazing - the water is actually turquoise. The old part of the city around the cathedral is really pretty (cobbled streets and stuff) and has many decent restaurants. The Museum of Art and History has a great collection including work by a brilliant Swiss artist, Felix Vallotton.

So good for a short holiday then - but I guess that doesn't help you much.

I think it's in Switzerland, if that is any help. No trouble.

I thought it was pretty, but dull and expensive. This is based on spending one night there about 10 years ago. I could see the mountains and decided to go there instead.

MArk C has a friend who lived there for a couple of years. It was a nice place to visit, but I get the impression it wasn't a very exciting place to live. He always had tales of mad referendums the swiss had. Good for getting to ski slopes, good public transport, but you can get done for smuggling if you go to a supermarket in france and bring cheese back into switzerland...

Lots of great bars and cafes, gorgeous to sit out in the afternoons with a beer or two. Looked like good shopping too. Nice parks. Lots of brits working out there too. Companies transferring head offices for tax breaks...

ahem

What?! It's true! That's why Harry went over. The down side is that you can only stay there for 2 (I think) years and then you have to become a swiss citizen or leave.

My Grandad has lived there most of his life so I've visited a lot. It's not thrilling. It's like the most quietly European parts of all middle-European cities with none of the quirks. The lake is beautiful though and so are the mountains.
