Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 March 2003 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Noooooo, Batman is all about vigilanty vengence
Frank Miller said "If your only memory of Batman is that of Adam West and Burt Ward exchanging camped-out quips, while cobbering slumming guest-stars Vincent price and Cesar Romero, I hope this book will come as a surprise... For me, Batman was never funny." at the Introduction of Batman:Year 1

Someone post some vintage Element Lad pics - he was the Legionnaire everyone speculated was gay. Bearing in mind he was in the same team as Cosmic Boy as seen on the first pic here, just imagine how camp he often was. Actually, it was mostly the pink costume, I think. As it happens I know loads of rabid Legion fans, and almost all of the male ones are gay. (I am only a moderate fan = I am bisexual.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

A Nairn, Batman is all vigilanty vengance, but WHAT IS ROBIN DOING IN THAT PICTURE?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

As my mom always says: "Gay until proven straight"

oops (Oops), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Methinks Frank Miller doth protest a bit too much. It's his fault Batman's always so moody now, anyway, always hanging around in the wet and moaning. I remember when he was the Rainbow Batman and had a bright costume for every occasion, all in dazzling colours. Or that time he strolled down the street whistling a happy tune and the caption said "Truly, Batman Digs This Day!"

Al Ewing (Al Ewing), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Northstar from Alpha Flight was.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Robin is all up in that bitch!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

if a guy is in tights it may be hard for him to prove he is straight

jethro (jethro), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Particularly if his face is buried between another man's butt cheeks.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Superman if you listen to the Sugarhill Gang.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah... batman and robin always telling aunt harriet that they had some secret meeting to go to!

jethro (jethro), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

You should read:
Fredric Wertham's "Seduction of the Innocent"

here's a quote:
"Only someone ignorant of the fundamentals of psychiatry and of the psychopathology of sex can fail to realize a subtle atmosphere of homoeroticism which pervades the adventure of the mature 'Batman' and his young friend 'Robin'"

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't Northstar declare his sexuality in the EXACT SAME MOMENT that he knocked a gigantic mountie through a solid brick wall? It was like he was on a roll.

Al Ewing (Al Ewing), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

There's lots relating to that section of Seduction of the Innocents in Chabon's wonderful Kavalier & Clay. Wertham was very much off the money, of course.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"Wertham was very much off the money, of course"
yeah, and it's funny

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

What about gay people who might be superheroes? Why don't we get a thread?

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Element Lad was indeed more or less gay--at first the official line was that "he's the last survivor of his species, the question's irrelevant," but then he got a girlfriend from Earth. But then it turned out that the girlfriend had originally been a boy but had started taking gender-changing drugs to make himself more attractive to E.L., who patiently explained that anything that had happened between them wasn't _because_ of the girlfriend being a girl, it was in _sp_--[cue gigantic explosion etc.].

Superheroes and Supervillains are Inherently Gay or Deviant
(idea) by dko (1.8 hr) (print) ? 1 C! Sat Feb 24 2001 at 20:01:01

First off, I'm not homophobic or against deviance in any way, shape or form, I'm just here to research Superheroes and Supervillains.

In reply to Evil Catullus' writeup below, to make it clear to everyone; this is a Joke, and a bad one at that. This argument is one that has raged through the ranks of my friends, started by me, but only as a way to pass the time. Not a serious argument.

Oh, and on the subject of Vision the Robot; robots, by definition are all androgynous, being androgynous, they are all of one sex, now if they were to have conjugal relations, they would be having them with a creature or being of the same sex, would they not?

Really. Think about it. Name one superhero that was neither Gay nor Deviant.
Except Mr. T.

Case and Point:

Batman
Deviant: In any one episode of the TV series, and, sometimes, the cartoon, Batman spends anywhere between five seconds and twenty minutes putting on a large, black, form-fitting rubber suit.
Gay: Robin. Enough said.
Gay: Batman, in all incarnations other than the original TV series, has a giant, twenty-foot-long, black phallic car.
?: The Bat Cave. Freudian Metaphor or Glorified Closet? The jury's still out on that one.
?: Has an aged man-servant who appears to be British. Cares for him deeply.

Green Lantern
Gay: Is extremely color-coordinated.
Gay: Wears spandex... all the time.
Gay: His power comes from jewelry.

Aquaman
Deviant: Can 'communicate' with fish.
?: Has gills.
Gay: Wears a tight full-body suit of sparkling scales.

Birdman
Deviant: Birdboy. Enough said.
Gay: Wears a skin-tight costume with feathers, wings, and a decidedly effeminate mask.
Deviant: Screams his own name before entering any room.

Wonder Woman
Lesbian: Comes from an island of amazons.
Deviant: Has an invisible airplane. Peek-a-Boo.
Deviant: Two Words: Golden Lasso
Deviant: Runs in High-Heels.

Penguin
Deviant: If you have to ask, you don't want to know. Well, on second thought, wouldn't you?

Superman
Gay: Spandex.
?: Fortress of Closetude?
Deviant: Super Speed = Super Friction.
?: Has not, until recently, hit on Lois Lane. Mayhap because of the above...
Gay: Jimmy, the paper boy.

The Incredible Hulk
Gay: Cut-Off jeans and green body paint. Prove me wrong.
?: Grows when excited.

Vision
Gay: Robots, by definition are all androgynous, being androgynous, they are all of one sex, now if they were to have conjugal relations, they would be having them with a creature or being of the same sex, would they not? I think that proves the point. Gay, Gay, Gay!

Should I go on?
Sorry for ruining your childhood.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

At least he acknowledges, in the preamble, that it's a bad joke.
I mean, "wears spandex" is not admissable evidence because that's nearly a given in the genre.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably too big to post here. (If you know what I mean.) I'm glad they went through with this after all the fuss.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you say treasure trove?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

holy cow! I didn't realize that at one point it wasn't just their flight rings that made the legion of superheroes light in their loafers!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a fairly inaccurate site -- Carrie "White Out" Stetko is very not bisexual.

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

But that dancing Spiderman sure is!

Leee Majors (Leee), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, and Lord Fanny of the Invisibles may be gay and a transvestite, but is not "transgendered" in any meaningful way. He's got a thingee and everything.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, roughly half of one the site insists are "outed" should still be in "uncertain orientation"; I mean, c'mon, I've read Watchmen, like, 20 times, and the only one Moore even hinted at as being gay was Silouette. Where is the site's braintrust getting this idea that Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice were bumping uglies?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

what ever happened to Birdman, anyway? what a dumb superhero.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it just me, or were all the female comic characters on that list either bi or lesbian?

ModJ (ModJ), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Wishful thinking on the site's part.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

check the newest issue of Wizard for the "gay " take on lots of superheroes. They've got Galactus as Gaylactus.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently you didn't read it well enough. It was made quite clear in Sally Jupiter's letter to her manager, that CM and HJ were a pair, and Sally was acting as a front for HJ.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

In the fake letters/books/magazine ads in the back? (I think I've read those parts only twice.)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I rechecked.
There *is* a letter by Sally Jupiter's boyfriend/manager (whatzizname) at the end of Issue 9 where he sez something about "HJ and Nelly" and I do recall asking myself, back in '87, "Nelly? Who the fuck's she?" and then immediately forgetting about it.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Nelly = Nelson, but I guess you got it know. Also, in the interview with Sally Jupiter she mentions that there were other gay people in Minutemen besides Silhouette, obviously referring to HJ & CM.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The news item 2 pages before it (declaring "Silk Spectre and Hooded Justice are an Item!") threw me off; but then again, Out of the 10 times I've read Watchmen, I only read *all* the "bonus material" twice.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Changing subjects slightly...Wasn't there a bit of a kefluffle about a possible fling between Storm of the X-men and some crazy Nimbo* naked Yukio back when Storm had no powers?

* Nimbo = "Ninja Bimbo"
