Wilko talks utter gibberish ! what were Sunderland thinking of in appointing him in the first place !

Also Cotterill gone as well.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

jesus,a bit close to the end of the season to fire him,its not going to give his successor much of a chance to turn things round

robin (robin), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

he did once win the old first division, god bless the lad. did some great things for leeds, established the academy there, but he doesn't know modern football.

who next then? who's around? o' leary? big ron?

matthew james (matthew james), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

but......Moyes saved Everton last year. But seriously Sunderland fans will eating fish n chips after at an away match in Cleethorpes against Grimsby next season.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought this was to do with some alt.country deal.

They have been laughably bad a lot of the time, especially that great seven minutes with three own goals. I can't really see them turning it round in the last 8 games or whatever it is.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Newcastle and Boro fans suggesed that "Howard's Way" was a one way express ticket to the Nationwide.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Skidmore that's Wilco !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I was joking, Martian. It is not clear what they would be sacked from either.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

record deal?
making dull records?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

bring back peter reid !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Niall Quinn for manager?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Howard Wilkinson is SUPPOSED to be the most clued up British coach in the game given his role as FA Director of football and his devotion to the study of the game - but like Graham Taylor, despite his great achievements in club management early in his managerial career he is now going to be remembered more as a failure it seems. it is ironic that Wilko remains the only English coach to have won the league title in the last 18 years.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i predict Sunderland will get John Gregory in

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

no, disaster at Derby

bookies favourite Mick Mac-plasticirishyorkie-carthy

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't think it'll be Gregory - there are enquiries going on about his transfer dealings, especially Bosko, who at least had a great name.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

George Graham!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't think he'd take it, to be honest.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

it is ironic that Wilko remains the only English coach to have won the league title in the last 18 years.

B-but, what about Howard Kendall...a mere, er, 16 years ago?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Terry Fenwick!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah gregory's name seems to be mud at the moment...

robin (robin), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

they were suggesting McCarthy on the news earlier.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds a very plausible one. He's from the NE, he's available.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Kendall is the reason i didnt say 20 years! i thought he was more Welsh tho for some reason, also i thought Everton last won the league in '85 but you're saying '87?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

mcarthy's not north east! well, unless some petty binding of geography and region tells you so. but he's a yorkshireman. appears a likely pick though, unless knobhead ridsdale has been chatting quietly trying to arrange venable's inevatible, necassary replacement (eirik bakke striker, alan smith midfield? what on the green fucking earth?).

venables for sunderland!

matthew james (matthew james), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought the rumour was that Martin O'Neill wanted a return to his childhood favourites...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

you forgot martin s is from bristol, yorkshire is north-east on the compass.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

yorkshire's also in the north-east of england, but this is football, so all such concerns go out of the window.

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

david o'leary would be wise to take this job

mccartheh and quinn seem to be the media faves, though i recall quinn saying he didn't want anything to do with coaching...

zemko (bob), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 01:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Kendall is the reason i didnt say 20 years! i thought he was more Welsh tho for some reason

Well, perhaps the FA thought so too - he never received an England cap, despite being part of that magical EFC midfield with Ball and Harvey.

also i thought Everton last won the league in '85 but you're saying '87?

Yes, Pat van den Hauwe stabbing the ball in with clumsy rigour at Carrow Road on a May Monday of that year to drag the trophy across Stanley Park again. After three months of extensive decontamination, we were able to put it on display.

Of course, if we're going back 20 years, we mustn't forget Joe "That's Livin' All Wrong" Fagan.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I never understood why Sunderland employed Wilko in the first place... I think it was clear to everyone other than the Sunderland board that it would be a disaster from the word go.

Mick McCarthy does seem a likely choice, David O'Leary and friends less so. But I reckon it'll go to George Burley or one of the other First Division promotion specialists.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

appearently mc carthy has been appointed
seems like a fairly bad move in my opinion, although i'm sure kilbane will be delighted

robin (robin), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

this just goes to show that those in power have absolutely no way of telling their arses from their elbows. everyone laughed (or, in the case of sunnerlan fans, shook their heads) when they appointed wilkinson and everyone has been proved correct. their last throw of the dice is a pitiful sight as they deserve a premiership club but it's all over.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

First Division promotion specialists

most of those are of course Premiership relegation specialists too (ala Dave Bassett)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

burley isnt exactly a promotion specialist. how many attempts did it take him with ipswich???

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't normally think of Yorkshire as the north east, no. I was misremembering where he was from. (Tim H, from Exeter, reckons that I'm virtually a Geordie, coming from Bristol.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Looks like it's going to be McCarthy. Interesting choice for him, given that he'd be considered for most middle-ranking club positions that come up, and he can't really expect to save them from relegation. He's got nothing to lose this season - he won't get any grief if they go down - but he'll have to bring them straight back up next season and that'll be trickier than he probably thinks.

They are a large club in terms of attendance, but he could have waited for something easier.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

In the absence of other footie threads on new answers, that Newcastle game from last night was a pearler. It had everything, including a hella lot of chheating. I noticed that not much was made of Shearer's elbow on one of the Inter defenders.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't see all the game, saw part of the highlights. Shearer criticising the Inter players for gamesmanship made me chuckle.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I was disappointed to see Totti get sent off so early in the Arsenal Roma game... his squaring off with Martin Keown had the potential to be hugely entertaining.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh yeah, Martin Keown. I saw the incident and if he felt that from Totti so badly I reckon my sister could probably take him in a fight.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

beating the Italians at their own game = classic

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 10:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Cabbage's sister = hard as Chesterfield nails.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

arsenal were so frustrating-if they were as good at finishing as they are at passing they'd score 4 or 5 every match,no matter who they were playing

robin (robin), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)
