Reason to remove the regime

Why is it the fact that the US is building an
immense oil pipeline circuit through
Turkey, (tapping oil deposits from Northern Iraq) not brought to the forefront as "alternate" reasons for the US's need
to remove Iraq's regime?

Chris Ram, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

don't the Kurds basically have autonomy over the northern part of Iraq (I'm assuming it's in the no-fly zone)?

P, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Possibly because doing so would force those in favor of the war to point out the oil/money-related reasons France and Germany have for NOT going to war (France gets a substantial discount on Iraqi oil and Germany has some outstanding debt it's attempting to collect from Iraq).

I agree that it's better to not kill people than it is to kill people, but can we put the "your reasons are all about oil!" grandstanding aside, since it's an accusation that can be levelled at everyone looking at Iraq (except maybe Israel)?

Israel takes the high road!

I don't think it's ALL about oil, that's just a nice bonus.
However, I'm skeptical of the reasoning that 'we would spend too much on the war and not gain enough oil to justify it' People who say this seem to think that the price of oil is set in stone.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but...

1) removing saddam will set a precedent for unilateral pre-emptive action worldwide; the exact opposite of bush sr.'s supposed New World Order. of course as Jon Stewart points out if we go it alone we'll be disregarding the wishes of the UN Security Council in order to punish Iraq for disregarding the wishes of the UN Security Council (and in a far more, uh, active way than Iraq has!) but that just ultimately backs up

2) our effort to prove that NATO and the UN are ineffective institutions for ordering the world.

There is no such thing as an effective institution for ordering the world.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer, it appears you forgot to type "the way the US wants it" at the end of your post.

Haha I want to put the world on my wish list!

*shrugs* Someone put it up for bid on eBay a while back.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Only ten million as a starting bid? The world is severely undervalued these days.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, but he appears to be a motivated seller

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Never hurts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

In lieu of an effective institution for ordering the world Bush says "let the world order itself" i.e. rule of the strongest. And so it appears the argument ends.
