aarrgghhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

donna (donna), Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the reason is because we actually overestimate average intelligence. I'd imagine most people who get so into computers that they find stuff like this are pretty intelligent and literate, because you'd have to have an active interest in information to find this board. So the group of us, just as an example, are all smart, right? So we look at each other, and go, "Wow, everyone is pretty cool". Then you go into the real world and go, "These people are morons." It's the same thing with real life - if you are above average intelligence, chances are you will seek out those who are also above average to befriend. So it makes everyone else seem stupid by default.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone else seems stupid by default regardless, you guys just use more bigger words and stuph

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 15 March 2003 07:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally I think it's the opposite, I think computers are stupid and so they make you have to think stupid in order to operate them, so people who get into computers are just as likely to have wound up as possibly the stupidest people of all.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 15 March 2003 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Huh?

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 15 March 2003 07:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer Hand reveals HERSELF to be my wife!

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 15 March 2003 07:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha Tracer is a chiXor, rock.

Anyway, I used a bad choice of words, it's not "people who get into computers" et al, it's more people who use computers for such a purpose as to discuss literary, cultural, and artistic means of expression, and to get into debates and such. Also, I think the majority of ILX seems to have relatively normal social lives?

Whatever, I'm hammered and babbling when I should pay attention to my friends.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 15 March 2003 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

You ARE paying attention to us.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 March 2003 08:51 (twenty-three years ago)

the majority of ILX seems to have relatively normal social lives?

Yeah we're all rockcrits and IT professionals, just regular foax! I mean we're at home posting to chatboards at 4 in the morning but HEY that's REGULAR in the FUTURE where we LIVE and please let's not discuss AIM.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 15 March 2003 08:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Intelligence and being wise are not the same thing. Hey, I'm one of those smart kids who uses a computer for everything, but boy am I ever DUMB with a capital DUH.

kate (suzy), Saturday, 15 March 2003 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Cuz they insist on arguing with me even though I'm 100% right all the time

dave q, Saturday, 15 March 2003 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

ally, from yr first post - i think you may have a sad ilfe. sorry, but you're wrong.

Marika (marika), Saturday, 15 March 2003 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to Ilfe once. Nice shoeshops.

If you want something to blame for general stupidity then I'd be pointing a finger directly at the industrial revolution.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 15 March 2003 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Some of the most stupid people I've ever known have also been extremely well educated.

I've also known a couple of real whiz-kid computer geeks that were in almost every other way virtual imbeciles. Although they thought they were genuises.

I don't have any profound conclusions about this, though. I never assume *anyone* is stupid unless they provide some evidence of it. And since I'm pretty stupid myself in some respects, I don't even mean it as a criticism.

I don't have a normal social life, BTW. In fact, I don't have any. Well, I get up to London about once a year...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Saturday, 15 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

''I think the majority of ILX seems to have relatively normal social lives?''

good thing you put the 'majority' word there ally.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 15 March 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't suppose this applies to everyone, but I spend a lot of time online simply for want of anything better to do. I don't even get much interaction on here, but even if I did, I'd still consider it a piss-poor substitute for real-life stuff.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Saturday, 15 March 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Alright, so let me rephrase:

"I think, on ILX, that I have a relatively normal social life, and the rest of you are twisted freaks." Is this better for everyone?

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not a twisted freak. Not twisted, anyway...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

donna is everything ok?

i would smile with all the nuance that that has, but in its place i'm inputting this ridiculously foreshortened token:

:)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Good qwestion. A qwestion for the more intwelligwent indivwidwal. Obvwiouswy not for mwe.
