What's at home that you need to pick up next time you go back there?

This is the thread where we talk, not about the new stuff we are going to buy, but about things in your bedroom at home or crawl space or whatever that cause you think sporadically, "I need to remember to get that when I go back there."

cowboy hat
cheap plastic black-and-white checkered bangle
loose photos
Cigarettes Are Sublime (poss. lent to nabisco?)
vintage random mixtapes w/out cases
baseball mitt

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

my birth certificate and my mother's death certificate.

Marika (marika), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I live at home so nothing, there are lots of things outside I need to pick up next time I go back there.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd be interested in hearing opinions on at what point people drop this definition of "home"

i have some possessions (mostly garbage) at my mom's house, but consider it just that, her house. my home is where i live

ron (ron), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

to answer my own question, i don't think i felt at home in my parents' house after leaving for college, even though i moved back there at two different times after that

ron (ron), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

It took me a moment to work out what this meant: what, you only visit your home once in a while? How does that work? Anyway, once I worked it out the answer is nothing. Had I left anything there when I had an opportunity to shift it, my mother would have given it away or destroyed it, as she did my youthful comic collection.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

all my fishing tackle, though fuck knows where I''ll put it all

chris (chris), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

do you tie flies?

ron (ron), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

nah, I'm not posh

chris (chris), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha Chris goes places without his tackle.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry! I guess not soon enough, eh? Sad, isn't it? I had a vague sense this would be confusing but couldn't really figure out why. I guess I think of my apartment as my "house" and my parent's house as my "home." Maybe because my current apartment is full of my landfriend's stuff and I miss the shagbark hickories and bees at my parents' house and all.

So, to clarify, I guess "or whatever" could be your school locker/homey's crib/ex's house/orphanage/convent/locker/trailer/cardboard box/kennel, anything, just somewhere where there is something to which you have a claim of right and mean to go get! Could include people/animals.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I would get my centaur and my harpy.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

biker jacket

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry about your car, Dan. I guess the centaur would be useful this weekend.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin's post struck a chord with me! After Uni I went off to Australia to work for a year or so and the day after I left, my mother GAVE AWAY my entire record collection. I am not sure why she did this, and I am not sure I ever really found it in my heart to forgive her. Not really.

C J (C J), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan! that's no way to talk about yr wife!

chris (chris), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh, that's the worst. The summer after my freshman year in college I stored my vinyl collection at my aunt's house and she threw them away because they were in a flood. Because vinyl is not waterproof or anything like that. I try not to think about all the Cherry Red 12" and . . . ugh . . . anyway,

the other pink earring

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

My wife is not a centaur!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

therefore,

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I am willing to put my health at risk for the sake of a laugh.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why we admire you so. Where should we send floral tributes?

chris (chris), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Send them to her parents' house, then she'll have to go back there to get them and I will have my IRONIC REVENGE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

oh good! Maybe she will post to my thread!

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Joei knows perfectly well what Dan is up to on this board. She just lets him think otherwise. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i recently retrieved two boxes of records from my mom's house. other recent items include sorels and ski clothes. never made it to the mountains though :(

no other items currently scheduled for pick-up.

ron (ron), Sunday, 16 March 2003 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

not a thing.
i did bury a time capsule of sorts in the yard by the old tool shed, so, if i got wacky maybe id visit them with shovel in hand

kephm, Sunday, 16 March 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

it's why I can't bring myself to leave: I couldn't leave any of my stuff behind. Oh, and I can't afford to live anywhere else, possibly because I spent all my money on stuff. And, I'd miss my dog and cat terribly. Secretly, I'm stuck in a rut.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 16 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I might start storing my paintings and comics at this local storage warehouse.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 16 March 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Depeche Mode -- Greatest Hits
Lou Reed -- Street Hassle

Mary (Mary), Monday, 24 March 2003 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

In response to the thread question: 18 hours of sleep!!

rex jr., Monday, 24 March 2003 09:25 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
So I brought the cowboy hat and the bracelet. I forgot to look for photos. I couldn't find the book or the earring and there were no good tapes but I brought back a bunch of vinyl LPs:

Psychedelic Furs -- Psychedelic Furs
Psychedelic Furs -- Talk Talk Talk
Psychedelic Furs -- Forever Now
Howard Devoto -- Jerky Visions of the Dram
Felt -- The Splendour of Fear
Pete Shelley -- Homosapien
The Beat -- Wha'appen
The Beat -- Special Beat Service
Blancmange -- Mange Tour
The Cure -- Boys Don't Cry
some Billy Squire record
there are more, I think.

Surprisingly, they all play really well.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The mitt was an okay Franklin one but not the Rawlings Nolan Ryan one I wanted so I left it at home. I got a new mitt anyway.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

What is this "home" of which you speak? We moved from house to house when I was growing up, and my father currently lives in a retirement home. My home, unfortunately, is whatever apartment I happen to be living in.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

There's nothing left, I think my mother said anything I hadn't moved out when I left was getting thrown out. I think I had only left a couple of silly sentimental little things there anyway that I should have not forgotten in the first place.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

At one point, my mom had lots of my memorobilia growing up. But then she had to move around alot more - these times without us kids as we were all in college - and couldn't afford to store all of it. So, we met up at her house and went through boxes and boxes of things, only pulling out a few choice pieces each, and throwing the rest away. So now I have nothing left of mine at her house. My Dad never had anything of mine. When he moved in with his girlfriend/new wife, he didn't take any of my stuff.
