Ebay tycoons

Any on here? Currently without work, I am listing a bunch of old shit on the 'Bay, and pretending it's just another Data Entry job. A waste of my time, or do people really buy a buttload of X-Men comics and old Q and NME cds?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't played on ebay for quite a while now, but I like the new EBAY commercial with all the singing and dancing.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

do people really buy a buttload of X-Men comics and old Q and NME cds?

The scary thing is that they do. It's insane what people will buy.

Of course I am not one to talk, having contemplated paying around $50.00 for The Moviegoer. Common sense got to me at the last moment though.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to make buckets of money buying & selling beanie babies on eBay - but that was a few years ago, and it also involved having to go to beanie baby conventions and fighting over MWMT [mint with mint tags] 2nd generation Digger the Crabs with frightful housewives.

But, I met another guy who bought and sold records he found in 2nd hand shops in London, and made quite a bit of money... well, at least to supplement his unemployment check.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never not sold anything on ebay, and whenever I did sell stuff, I made some good money. I sold CDs and vintage clothes to people living in Bumfuck.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ebay, bringing hipster culture to the people of Bumfuck".

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Said it before, say it again -- I'm eternally glad that aside from one or two browses I've never gone to eBay with intent to buy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

my first auction ended yesterday. it's the start of an EMPIRE

ron (ron), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I make a fair few quid selling dance records that I buy as job lots from boot fairs,etc.Now I dont have to work weekends anymore!I wouldn't say I was an eBay tycoon,but it helps!Just look at it as profit from recycling....

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not a tycoon but i will offer this little nugget of wisdom...

if you sell more than ~$6,500 in auctions, prepare to be audited by your friends at the IRS.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i've sold heaps of stuff, often at good profit, but i always end up spending the money before i've sent the goods and then have to come up with money for postage..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 17 March 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
How are you doing on Ebay at the moment? For the past few weeks, I have managed to make what equates to an extra day's salary on ebay per week. It's great! Like the stock market but for crap!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you know that this thread is one of three ebay threads that I have started? These are the others:

No more kidding around, who on ILX actually has the biggest...
Ebay thief!!!

Every time I think I have a handle on Phil's amount of twee, it rockets up another couple of notches.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha actually I bet he was fucking vicious to those housewives.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

blah blah saint etienne blah fanclub cd blah £300

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Like the stock market but for crap!
That's almost as good as Rex Murphy (Cdn media dude) calling the stock market "bingo for the wealthy."

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the amount some people are prepared to pay for that st etienne cd boggle my fucking mind. it's just NOT THAT RARE.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm thinking about selling all my crap via eBay.

hstencil, Friday, 19 December 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too. What else is really desirable besides St. Etienne cds?

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

northern soul 45s, private pressed psych LPs, pre-war blues 78s, new wave of british heavy metal 45s, coloured vinyl Samhain LPs

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

filesharing has really eaten into the value of some things, also, things eventually get reissued and become less valuable (thinking here of Sylvian's Weatherbox, which, while a nice piece of design, is suddenly not worth nearly as much now that the albums have been remastered). All those early MBV records have been reissued, so those aren't worth much any more either.

The most money I've made: something like $270 for a Miracleman TPB (which, admittedly, I think I paid $100 already so it wasn't loads of profit).

I sell my books and cds through amazon now, you don't have to pay anything to list so you can just stick it there and forget about it until it sells. Great if you don't need money immediately. I have a friend who made about $600 off books over a few months.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

All those early MBV records have been reissued, so those aren't worth much any more either

all? nope.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

the biggest value drop i've seen when the Let's Active "Cypress/Afoot" cd was reissued. three figures to less than 2.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, all (ecstasy and wine and this is your bloody valentine; is there something I'm forgotting?)

I was pissed that they reissued all the Felt albums before I got a chance to throw mine on Ebay. They were going for stupid money for a while there ($40 a pop, $200 for Bubblegum Perfume!)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet the Lolita Nation (Game Theory) CD still goes for decent money.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

you're forgetting the three 12" EPs they released in between them, which all still tend to go for quite high figures. in fact, the most expensive record i've ever bought was a mint "The New Record By MBV".

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

$200 for bubblegum perfume?! time for selling up

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I sold the Silver Jews' "Arizona Record" for $45 when gygax! mentioned that they are reissuing it soon...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

it's only going for about 2 pounds now.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My brother once sold a FLYER for a David Bowie concert for £30!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you buy it, Kyle? ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i got a decent wedge for selling my copies of the first two Coral singles. money for old rope frankly but i wasn't complaining

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the biggest value drop i've seen when the Let's Active "Cypress/Afoot" cd was reissued. three figures to less than 2.

OOPS! Forgot about selling that off.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a HUGE market for old rope, Jim!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the best buy I ever made on ebay was for a hardback copy of Gravity's Rainbow (the reissue that Viking put out for a bit a few years ago, which is impossible to find now and worth upwards of $200) for $40; I offered that much to the seller as soon as he listed it and he accepted! FOOL!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

$200 for bubblegum perfume?! time for selling up

Yikes! Me too. Shame mine has always had a cracked spine (where the tracklisting is, bah). And (crosspost) that as ever, I've missed the boat.

I have a promo of the CD single of the first issue of Radiohead's Creep, with a PR release sticker. I've always thought that some idiot might pay loads for that.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My crap market tip : buy British indie 45s. Wait 3/4 months. Then SELL.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah that can work. don't hang on to them though. i have a pile three foot deep of mid 90s UK indie 45s that no store will touch. i will almost certainly end up throwing them in the bin to make space.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

like, 400 of them.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I also bought the first Vines 45 (blech!) and someone bid and paid just under £100!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

almost nothing from the last ten years holds a high value for very long. the only real perennials are Nirvana coloured vinyl "Bleach" LPs and the Lovebuzz 45. everything else tends to ebb and flow quite heavily.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

If I had got around to buying the Strokes' Modern Age 7" when it came out, any idea what that would be worth now?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

about 20-25 pounds

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the rough trade version, not the US one.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I had that! Sold it obviously...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah well, I suppose if I'd bought ten it would have been worth it.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I had the clear? colored? vinyl one as well.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

that one's worthless

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

relatively

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a copy of the coloured vinyl "Bleach" - I bought it when it came out - and lost it the same day.

I am going to go shoot myself now.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

how does one lose an LP?!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What other crap have I got that might be worth something?

hmm.. the Divine Comedy's Promenade with bonus 4-track CD?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I also sold the first Garbage single - the one in a metallic sleeve - for quite a bit too, I recall.

I like this game.

Check Ebay, N! You might be surprised...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I always fear that no one would buy anything off me though, cause I have no seller's history. I suppose you have to sell low value things first in order to get a good 'rep'.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

how does one lose an LP?!

I bought it at Impact in Canberra on me lunch break. Sat on a bench under a tree to eat lunch. Got up and walked back to work only to realise I'd left the rekkid behind - OH NO! So I ran right back there, but it was already gone... :(

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

a copy of that Div Co CD remained unsold for 50 pounds recently, so less than that!

i had that garbage single too, sold it for A$50 i think, quite a while ago.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim, are you my younger brother?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

no-one cares what your history is as long as it doesn't have negative feedback (or I don't, anyway)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i may have been once!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(xp)

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

here's my unexpected rarity story

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if anythign I own on vinyl would sell on ebay? Jim you've seen my stuff, is anythign worth it? The gold vinyl "Fools Gold" ep is the only one I can think is worth anything at all.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hey i had that SDRE single too, got it for A$6 and sold it for US$42 two days later

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the final elliott smith 7" goes for crazy money, or did, a month ago. but I am not crass enough to sell it.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think so trayce unfortunately. unless it's super super rare, anything with slight damage tends to be pretty worthless.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got the first Smashing Pumpkins single on Limited Potential, bought upon release. I'm not even that fond of them, but I've held on to it anyway for the kick of it. But I'm at the point where I'd unload it. Also a bunch of American funk 45s that have been reissued -- but which of course makes them more valuable, not less, silly trainspotters.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, try this link instead

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

the amount some people are prepared to pay for that st etienne cd boggle my fucking mind. it's just NOT THAT RARE.

Funnily enough, yeah, I actually sold two a year apart. The first I found at a boot sale for £20, the second was in MusicTapeExchange in Camden for £40. 1st went for £370, second for £320, both to the US..

(The first time I was actually selling a few rareish CDs and thought they would go for £40 maybe.. Imagine my surprise when I logged on the following morn and it was already £320...)

I would probably sell more and tons except
1) Ebay is a banned site at work
2) I have no scanner so am limited to stuff I can fing jpg's of on the web...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 December 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What's surprising is when something you don't think is that rare goes ballastic. I was selling some of my Factory cassettes - you know, the ones in the big boxes - earlier this year and they would regularly go for about £15 a pop after setting them at £2.99. Then I put on "Educes Me" by Wim Mertens, which eventually sold for £190. I was watching the last hour and it went from £90 to £190 in that time - stupid money for one tape. I can understand it for "I love to paint", but it was Factory harp music for heaven's sake.

And ESOJ - you were outbid on my Boyracer CD single, weren't you?

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 19 December 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I sold the Promenade Cd for £40 a while ago. Other one's I'd look out for are Eurocentric by the Associates, anything by Red Box, early Cud and Denim. And old school rave mix cd's, I sold a megabass cd for £44 last month and the Renaissance/Northern exposure cd's go for silly money too.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Denim?? I have Denim on Ice on LP - surely that's not worth anything?! Comes with genuine 50p price sticker!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Early Now CDs!! (UK edition) - everything from 4 to 8 is worth ££££s, CD only though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, dunno about the LP's but I've seen the cd's go for £50+. Now Cd's are a good one too, but anything up to the mid-teen's should go for at least £20+, but a warning; the value of Now CD's can go down as well as up.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to buy tons on e-bay back in 1996 or so, before it caught on. Banana album $40, "Mirror" single $30, buncha US beatles lps $20.

Now, good place to sell stuff and buy if no-one else is collecting it...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I know a guy who owns and operates a small recording and rehearsal studio. He mainly works weekends and evenings and says he makes more money buying stuff in junk shops/auctions during the day and flogging it on ebay than he does from the studio. He's obviously worked hard at find out what people will pay for. Rare sheet music and records among other things.

ArfArf, Friday, 19 December 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i was outbid on the boyracer single. i have the vinyl but i felt like upgrading..

i'm hoping ebay does me proud as i sell my 4000 vinyl records over the next couple of years. i am planning to rid myself of 95% of my vinyl.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like you and me are in the same position Jim - I've got a shedload of vinyl to offload over the next few years, I just hope some of it is 'buyable'.

What are the best places to sell non-rare CDs? books? clothes?

I am feeling the need to get rid of stuff but I have never done ebay before.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 1 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ebay is still the best place to do this. Be prepared to deal with morans.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 1 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

T, signing up for EBay is major easy, and is totally free. Is the best place to sell clothes----especially if tis vintage. (I got a tight mod dress made in 1965 off of there, actually.) You may get more buyers if you can upload pics of what you're selling, along with the description. (Today's lot like to see what they won't make the time to read.)

Try Half.com to sell CDs.

Also, Amazon.com for books. Selling my old textbooks on there after uni kept me away from the credit sharks for a long time.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 1 May 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Be prepared to deal with morans.

Clearly, "morans" are the uber-stupid bunch of idiots.

Also, T, be wary of fraud: be sure to list that you prefer to recieve payment BEFORE you send the item out to the buyer: you don't want to be out both the product and your cash.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 1 May 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)
