easy to not lose. anyone bought a decent camera lately ?
i haven't had a good one before, but have always managed to
take okay-ish pictures with disposables. not any more !

digital or film?

film

How seriously do you want to take your photography?

Ed (dali), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I was pretty happy with my Olympus Stylus non-zoom which I got for about $125 or so. It was portable enough and took okay photos, but doesn't have those extra-features which I probably wouldn't have used anyways. It was 2 years ago, so I'm not sure if the model still exists, but I'm sure the line still exists.

But I've always been jealous of the Japanese girls with cameras the size of a fingernail.

My aps ixus is nice and simple, cost about a hundred quid, and if you remember not to mess about with picture sizes etc then it takes smart photos. You'd prolly be able to get the zoom one now within your budget.

You could pick up a nice second hand SLR in your price range but they aren't small.

Get a Pentax K1000, on eBay if you can and make sure it's one of the metal-body models. It's a basic, extremely well-made manual camera which both amateur and professional photographers often swear by. I've had mine for years without a problem. On eBay and elsewhere on the web they can go for $100-$170, but in a specialty store you'll pay almost twice that.

Olympus OM1 or Nikon F1 would get my vote.

Ed (dali), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

K1000! K1000!

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

hey amateurist, that looks a helluva lot like my (non-aps)camera (which needs a really good servicing, it's knackered)

chris (chris), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

bah! to your pentax shenanigans.

Olympus OM1 With a most excellent lens.

Nikon FE2

Ed (dali), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

talking of which, can anyone recommend me a good old-school camera shop that'll take my pentax apart and make it sing again? It's getting very kronky.

chris (chris), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Harrisons, London Road, Sheffield.

Ed (dali), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

except you in London now. there's a chinese guy in a little arcade opposite the umpbrella shop on new oxford st that I've used a lot. No camera repair/service is that cheap though.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, anyone interested in developing their own photos, but need equipment? I have here a B&W enlarger, plus some trays and bits and pieces. Chemicals too, but I think they might be no good now. I don't want it any more, and I'd as soon give it to someone I know through here who was willing to come and pick it up, rather than try to sell it on ebay or something. Email me for further details if you might be interested.

Oh if only I had the space.

Ed (dali), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

If only I had the space too!

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

(although, thinking about it, I could do with one of those little film-developing tanks even though i don't have room for a whole darkroom enlarger setup)

Revive! My dear ILXors, I am about to take the plunge into quasi-serious photography. Being a poor student, price is definately an issue. So is everything else, of course. Anyone have any advice for a mostly-lurker, occaisional poster? Bring on your tales of woe and inspiration.

we were just talking about this today on an oddly named thread:

What are you, a nationalist?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Spend money on lenses over the body - as long as the body functions and you can get a good exposure, that's all that really matters.

The K1000 is a good suggestion. I never see Olympus OMs cheap, and I lust over an OM-4 with a set of fast primes.

If you want bells and whistles (autofocus and advance, fancy metering), all of the entry-level cameras from the major companies are workable, but avoid the cheapo zooms that get packaged with them. Every manufacturer has a good 50mm f/1.8 lens, rarely more than $70USD new.

I'm very happy with the Canon Elan 7E and 50mm f/1.4 that I bought when I first got into photography. I overpaid ($400ish for the body, $275 for the lens), because I was dumb and didn't know how much cheaper I could get them on the Internet. It's very quiet, not too heavy, I've never had a bad exposure (other than my mistakes metering) or a roll screw up. If you can float the 7E and the $65 50mm f/1.8, I highly recommend itt.

I'd sell body parts for this or this.
