Of all the Pac Men, which was your favorite?

How many of these actually found their way to Western word arcades?

Pac Man
Ms. Pac Man
Jr. Pac Man
Pac Man Plus
Super Pac Man
Pac Mania
Pac Land
Hyper Pac Man

It's funny for me because I remember when one of my city-born cousins came up for a visit and told me of this "other" Pac Man he "only saw once" where instead of fruit in the middle, there was a Coca Cola that prolonged your power pellet ghost hunt and turned them all invisible.... "and it was really fast", he said. Since I never saw such a thing in my home town, I eventually thought he was lying, as kids often do for no particular reason.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered, almost 20 years later, that this game did exist and is called Pac Man Plus! I've tried to play it. It's pretty fuckin' difficult to say the least, as if Pac Man wasn't difficult enough!

He also told me about Jr. Pac Man, which I discovered really DID exist about 8 years ago.

For some reason, Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man and Pac Land are the only ones I ever saw in arcades at the time. This probably has something to do with the extreme difficulty of the games.

Did you ever notice how ridiculous it is that you can only get through about 3 mazes TOPS on one quarter? I don't remember, but did most of these games have the "CONTINUE? 10,9,8,7,6..." option countdown? I can only imagine how ridiculously fast level 10 would be on standard Pac Man.

I'm casting my vote for Pac Man Deluxe as my favorite Pac Man game, even though it isn't an official Pac Man release. That game is pretty cool because I can go through about 12 to 15 levels before I die, plus it's all 3d looking and features the music of the Beastie Boys when the fruit appears and James Brown when the ghosts turn "blue" (though they don't turn blue, they just start bulging in the eye area).

Pac Man Deluxe: freeware/shareware w/level editor. Go get it if you're a bored classic gaming fool like I've become.

My second favorite is Gobble for the Palm OS.

Search: the video game museum in St. Louis, where they have one of every pac-man game ever made.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pac Man games are the best video games ever, I think, because as far as I know it is the only game that leaves you one free hand to drink beer.

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

It's funny that Ms. Pac Man is the only one you ever see around.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Pacman board game rulez, U R all gay if you said Ms Pac Man

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Pac Man Jr. is my favorite. Scaredy, you never saw that one when it came out? Weird. I used to see it all the time.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I really didn't see Pac Man Jr. for some reason. When I finally found it in some weird place, I remember thinking, stupidly, "Oh, they're trying to revive this tired old theme? Ha!" I'm stupid. It's pretty damn hard, though. Almost as hard as Pac Man Plus, which makes me wonder why it would be your favorite. Actually, it may be harder than Pac Man Plus, now that I think about it...

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Well it was my favorite 'cause it had more different mazes. Variety is the spice of life, etc. Plus the way they were bigger than the size of the screen and stuff.

I actually never saw any of the ones on yr list from Super Pac Man on down.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Pac Land is dismal!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

sure it is now but it wasnt 'back in the day'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Pac and Paint not really being "canon"

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Pac Man ever have a backstory?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

My life is a ruin cos of work. KTG's a ruin cos of her fucked back.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I've said this here before, I'm pretty sure: one of my lecturers at university claimed that Pac Man was very popular with women because it's just like hoovering. I saw one or two flaws in that argument, mainly a) no it bloody isn't, and b) what world is this where all women really love hoovering?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

My favorite was Pacri Monster, which was a cheap knockoff handheld version of Pac Man with it's own little joystick and everything. Pacri Monster was a cool silver teal, I always thought it nicer to look at than actual Pac Man.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Pac Man is more popular with cokeheads, obviously.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to like pengo, which was fairly pac-man inspired. There's a Java vesion of it here:

http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~d3rebas/creative/martinsoft/pengo.html

but it's not quite as much phun as I remember, I'm afraid.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, that's exactly as much phun as i remeber it being. Fuck.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

What was the Pac Man that was part video game part pinball machine?

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

There was an article about a guy who had played the perfect pacman game. That is, he'd done 256 levels and got every bonus and every ghost with each power pill.

On one life.

Here's the link:
http://www.twingalaxies.com/PR-Pac-Man_World_Record.html

And the pinball one was Mr&Mrs Pac-Man

Simeon (Simeon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The beautful part was that Billy Mitchell was just ahead of the pack. This gives me hope for the world (no, really).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Who moved my cheese?

That's not your cheese - its Pac Man!

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i could never get into Pac-Man. The only variant I ever liked was a game which looked pretty much the same as Pac-Man apart from your character was a bank robber, the dots were coins (i think), and you had to escape at the bottom of the screen.

My memory is not that good so a few details might be wrong, but does anyone know which game this is. I only ever saw it in the arcades.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite enjoyed Hungry Horace which was a Pac-Man rip-off for ZX Spectrum. The levels were meant to be parks and the ghosts were replaced by angry parkies, furious at Horace for scoffing all the fruit.

The Horace team followed up their success with Horace Goes Skiing which, remarkably, was a rip-off of Frogger.

robster (robster), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I never did like Pac Man much because I was rubbish at it. I don't like hoovering either, but the similarities are oblique...

ha ha at first I thought 'hoovering' was british slang for cunnilingus. I think I will continue to believe this.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Some gentlemen might lead you to believe that it is a euphemism for ‘blow job’ and they have the scar tissue to prove it.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, actually, I did sort of like Pac Land. I forget about that one. And Pacmania was... interesting.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

“And behold, a golden pixilated circle did appear upon the darkened screen; and onto the circle was given a mouth. And the circle did speak unto the world saying ‘wakka wakka wakka,’ and partaking of a dot and fruit until none remained.”

I took a look on the Killer List of Video Games and the only thing close was Ab$cam.

I do clearly remember a similar game called Bank Heist, it was for the Atari 2600 though.

Female Games (Pac man, bridge, etc.)

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I just say that Lara's link to the Church of Pac-man is superb? I have written to him to encourage the tattoo, I believe it will enhance his experience.

Simeon (Simeon), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I never liked eating the ghosts. I thought it was unnecessarily cruel.

B.Rad (Brad), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

For play, Ms. Pac-man, but for sheer fun, Puck-Man. That was the official name of the game when it first came out in Japan. They had to change it when it was released to American audiences cos they feared an army of cheeky kids with sharpies....

Adam Bruneau, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

What was the Pac Man that was part video game part pinball machine?

Baby Pac-Man

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh those ghosts deserved it, if you condider Pac Man losing a life as a DEATH from which he is granted a miraculous reprieve. Mr Burns put it pretty well on the Simpsons that time... don't actually remember which... it was cool, though. "The hunter has become the hunted!"

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I once heard a theory that pacman was some kind of spooked techno-allegory for the Japanese experience post-Hiroshima. Can anyone shed any lite on this?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't get it though. The ghosts are already dead, but when pac-man eats one it becomes a ghost of a ghost.

btw, the game i mentioned before might be Lock'n'chase. If i can find the rom I'll check it out.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

It is definately Lock'n'chase... I think I remember it on the Intellivision...

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
Has anyone played Pac Attack? It's an unholy mix of Pac Man and Tetris - double fun for the hoovering-inclined female player.
