I am looking for Conversations with Olivier Messiaen by Claude Samuel and translated into English by Felix Aprahamian.

It is sadly out of print and there is VERY little information about it on the internet. Indeed, so little that despite me having researched Messiaen for the past several years I was completely unaware of its existence.

So any help in obtaining it would be greatly appreciated.

Please.

are you going to all the dates on the uk tour?

i'm going to belfast, edinburgh (obviously) and both dates at shepherds bush.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to steal backstage passes at the Shepherds Bush Empire tomorrow night and try to sneak in when Radiohead play, mwah hah hah!

kate, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Radiohead tickets sold out in half an hour over here. Sometimes I don't understand the world.

I am going to try, but it will be quite difficult financially for me. If I could land the interview/feature I was originally going to do, I could get some (parental) funding, but without the feature I will have to pay for it all with my own money and I'm not entirely sure I have enough. I do have tickets for all the dates, though. And if anyone could help me to get a prominent magazine interested in this, or could help me get the access (afterparty, interview time, and such) necessary for such a pursuit, please do tell me! (Um, for anyone unclear on this, it's for Radiohead's UK tour coming up this May)

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate!! Steal passes for me!!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, if someone had an extra ticket to the Radiohead at Shepherd's Bush thing, I gotta coworker who is desperate to go. He's pretty cute if any ladies are interested...

If someone has a copy of this at their local library, you could check it out and then say it was stolen, and I will pay for however much the library fines you. I already checked every library around here, even in Chicago, and none have it.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you going to give it back after, or are you asking someone to commit an act of pure evil? I mean, obviously someone who has tickets to multiple Radiohead gigs when some of us can't get one is pure evil anyway...

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Act of pure evil! And also, it's not really an act of evil if the library is compensated for their loss, I think.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to offend any of the librarians here.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

''Radiohead tickets sold out in half an hour over here. Sometimes I don't understand the world.''

yeah.

I'll check it with my local library. and I could photocopy the book (I'm not gonna steal anything).

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The Library of Congress has it:
http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?Search_Arg=Conversations+with+Olivier+Messiaen+&Search_Code=TALL&PID=13575&SEQ=20030319105437&CNT=25&HIST=1

but I have no idea what it takes to access something at the Library of Congress...

If its like the british library then all you have to do is apply.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

(should explain that the British Library is the UK equivalen of the LoC and one of 5 places that copies books published in the UK must be sent)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

If you steal a rare book from a library you will get to read it, and also deprive generations of people from ever getting the chance to.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Heed the wise words above.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd really like to own the book, and the one person I know who has a copy close to him said he was the first person to check the book out in 15 years.

Not that this excuses it, but there seems to be a very limited number of copies of this book in the world, and an even tinier audience interested in reading it.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Melissa - I emailed you

Have you tried the Publishers? It's unlikely, but may be worth a try.

There's this:

but I'm not sure it's the same translator. It's also very pricey.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't mean to sound judgemental, but I've just always found it very frustrating/irritating when I go into a library looking for an obscure-ish older book only to find out the copy they own is now "missing" ie stolen.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Borrow the book & photocopy it, then give the thing back. That way you've increased the number of accessible copies in the world, not reduced it.
