I HATE AMERICA.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

jon perhaps you're listening to sports radio?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Depressing news in the morning or upbeat news in the morning.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, yesterday I was feeling kind of scared about everything and wanted to hear about what was going on and was really mad when every single station (even talk radio) was playing music.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

mark p: I'm listening to the local RAWK stations with morning shows. The other radio presets I have are playing music. One station leaves a cd changer playing during the day. They haven't changed the CDs in it in ages. So I've heard most of that The Cure "Best Of" album 3000x times and the new Cursive about as many.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Christ, WEEI Sports Radio here in Boston has done no talk of sports all talk of war. Im sick of hearing about it. Sarah have you tried NPR?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Jon cites one of the few things worth celebrating about American culture right now & then says "I hate America"? Holy f*ck, Jon, there's no shortage of war news right now. Turn on NPR f'r Chrissake and let us sports fans drown our sorrow in pre-season baseball and the eventual certainty of the Tampa Bay Lightning winning Lord Stanley's Cup.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

at least they're not postponing the NCAA tourney now?

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Here we go again with the Tampa Bay Lightning cup talk. John you clearly are mistaken. BRUINS baby!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

*chokes on bagel*

You're both delusional!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

wars come and go, but baseball is forever

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's it going to be then Mark? When we all know its really going to be Detroit. Or Ottawa.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

baseball as fine as long as they don't fucking sing "God Bless America" every 7th inning stretch. Fuck Selig.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, the Red Sox are finally winning the World Series this year. ;)

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

In my dreams: Toronto.

For real: Detroit.

(I think Ottawa's gonna collapse again.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

NO NO NO PLEASE GOD NOT ANOTHER GOD DAMNED DETROIT STANLEY CUP I DON'T THINK I CAN STAND IT

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris V. you realize you've just jinxed them? Dave R. is going to be PISSED.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

NCAA "March Madness" = Most of America too Distracted to Notice Baghdad's Obliteration

I like how America expects the rest of the world to be sympathetic about what happened on Sept. 11th '01, but then turns a blind eye to Babylon, er, Baghdad, just in time to blast it with hundreds of Tomahawk cruise missiles. But, y'know, in America, if it's not on TV, then it didn't happen.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I know John I can't stand it either but it looks more and more like the impending reality!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

The day Vincent Lecalvier is skating around with the Stanley Cup....is the day he gets traded to Detroit.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

9-1-0 in their last ten, Jesus Christ. Opposing Detroit any time after February is a perennially & depressingly pointless endeavor. It's like they go on auto-kill once the championship's in sight.

nevertheless this is the year that Tampa Bay SHOCKS THE WORLD

he asserted meekly & not altogether self-convincingly

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

John, Toronto will win the Cup before Tampa Bay will!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Stanley Cups are all that Detroit has, really... don't take that away!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

the eventual certainty of the Tampa Bay Lightning winning Lord Stanley's Cup

John, I was tempted to post this on the "this is the thread where you copy and paste whatever other posts on ilx made you laugh out loud" thread.

NPR has decent and comprehensive coverage of the impending war. Local rock stations are not the place to go for intelligent coverage of, well, anything.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the more pressing question, really, is "When does Paul Kariya get to play for a team that has a snowball's chance in Hell?" It really suX0rs to have a good & exciting player stuck down in Anaheim without even the compensatory oh-well-OK-that's-cool factor of the Karyia-Selanne line left.

*cue dreamy music*...now...if he were down in, say...Tampa...

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

As it stands now, first round of the playoffs my bruins get to play NJ.

1. We lose
2. The most boring playoff games ever...Burnsie's tight defensive style does not make for exciting games.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"Every morning radio show in the United States seems to be talking about sports not war"

And now so does this thread.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris would you rather play Philly?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the more pressing question, really, is "When does Paul Kariya get to play for a team that has a snowball's chance in Hell?"

I blame the hair. And hstencil.

I'm rooting for Toronto get the cup this year. My feelings for the Wings are very complicated.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

As it stands now, first round of the playoffs my bruins get to play NJ.

1. We lose

Boston beat the Teufels 4-3 just the other night! Where is your faith, man? WHERE IS YOUR FAITH?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

In a heart beat. We play well against the Flyers, plus it would be much more exciting to watch even if we did get smoked. I would also like to see them play Toronto too.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah Boston-Philly is an ace matchup

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I know nothing about hockey.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why it's your fault.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Contrary to popular belief, I don't approve NHL trades.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Detroit will repeat. Have you seen the box scores lately? They are out their mind right now. Yzerman's return really invigorated them.

That said, I can't find any joy in it. They should cancel the fucking NCAA's. I'm serious.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

That said, I can't find any joy in it.

Then you aren't drinking hard enough. Get TO it, man

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Contrary to popular belief, I don't approve NHL trades.

Shh, hstencil, don't try and play up your ignorance. Hockey fans are a violent breed and the only movie they ever ever watch is Slap Shot, and they light candles to icons of Don Cherry. Just learn the names of the teams and smile and play along, or you will face the wrath of an injured nation (and Michigan and Boston) marching upon you with banners of Guy LaFleur, Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzsky and Mario Lemieux leading the way, while Leslie Neilsen acts as strategic coordinator and Shatner diverts attention by throwing his toupee in the air, all to the music of the Hanson Brothers at full blast.

"Hey! You! Let's brew!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned's post is far too long for us hockey fans to finish reading

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry, the Cliff Notes version:

"Hockey GOOD! Not hockey BAD!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

they light candles to icons of Don Cherry

that's the only thing we sorta have in common.

Actually, I have Capitals and Penguins jerseys somewhere, and I have been to a few hockey games in my brief life.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Fear the hockey haircut!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

My theory of the world is based on Bob Probert.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Poor Probs...back in rehab again.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Right now I'm Brian Wilson but if I keep going without a haircut, I might be Jaromir Jagr.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

oh my god, i can't wait until thursday! ROUND ONE ACTION! WOOOOOOOOO

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Chairman Shatner now will divert people by saying "Turn Up The Heat!"

Leafs will dominate this playoff.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Excuse me, asshole.. It's March MAYHEM.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned spelt 'Gretzky' wrong = he is Amurkin.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Yee fuckin' haw. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yeahm Hee Haw, classic Amurkin.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Excuse me, asshole.. It's March MAYHEM.

Here where I live (Lexington, KY...home of University of Kentucky), it's been referred to as March Madness since the day I was born; maybe they're trying to avoid some copyright infringment or something.

If UK wins the tourny this year, I'm gonna take photos of the ensuing riot (yes, that's right, RIOT) and post them up here so you all can see how seriously fucked up this town gets over the tourny.

Asshole. :D

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's actually March Burzum now

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

first person to successfully Photoshop Varg in a UConn jersey gets a kiss

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

It's totally March Madness yo.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

The Illinois High School Association has a copyright on "March Madness", so it got changed to Mayhem a few years ago after the IHSA threatened to sue!

Anyways, have fun at the riots because Kentucky's going to win it all. [unfortunatly].

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

And Chicago high school basketball owns you all.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's called escapism. Try listening to NPR if you want war.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Not anymore it doesn't. Actually, it didn't own me when I lived in Chicago, either.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

oh! when i was in high school, it was like Kevin Garnett, Ronnie Fields, Michael Wright, Quentin Richardson, Bobby Simmons, Melvin Ely, Antoine Walker, Frank Williams, Aaron McGhee, Corey Maggette, etc, etc were all playing high school ball in the Chicago area! And they're all in the NBA! and Napoleon Harris and Antwawn Randle-El are in the NFL now, but were basketball stars... Donovan McNabb too.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever happened to Ronnie Fields? Gas station, perhaps?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, the Red Sox are finally winning the World Series this year. ;)

naw, keep dreaming. though the second most ridiculous baseball-oriented thing to say -- that the Phillies are finally winning the World Series this year -- is closer to the truth :-)

p.s.: i hate the nets -- i'm a knicks fan.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever happened to the guy who played for Kentucky that went to Kenwood? Did he ever make the NBA?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Phillies made some vast improvements that the Sox only wish they could have done. Thome, Rolen and Millwood. We get a bunch of 2nd rate utility guys. God, i love the Red Sox so much.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris you're a k-great guy but I despise the Red Sox even more than the Yankees, and as such, I hope they rot.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever happened to Ronnie Fields? Gas station, perhaps?

Ronnie Fields is my sports hero... I even had a website dedicated to him when I was like 14! Anyways, I think he's in the USBL or something.

Whatever happened to the guy who played for Kentucky that went to Kenwood? Did he ever make the NBA?

Nazr Mohammed? That bitch was supposed to go to Illinois. Anyways, he was drafted, and I think he's playing on the Atlanta Hawks still... Ironically coached by ex-Illinois head coach Lon Kruger...

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

oh wait, lon kruger got fired.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

ouch mark. How can you possibly hate the Red Sox more than the Yankees? Your in Canada correct? Expo's fan? Blue Jays? What do you think the Expo's are going to do next year?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I know it's been said, but I gotta say it again: I love the turn this thread took. (esp seeing as I'm on a stupid rock radio morning show. Sorry Jon.)

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Nazr Mohammed was drafted by the 76ers and traded to the Hawks in the Theo Ratliffe deal. The Lakers were trying hard to nab him before the training deadline, but couldn't get it done. He's a solid role player.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well the Bruins just fired Robbie Ftorek. Season over.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, depending on who they replace him with, that sounds like a smart move. Remember what Larry Robinson did for the Devils a few years ago?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

-"sounds like" +"could be"

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Kenwood got a mention in a Common Sense song... Something about having the "best hos" or maybe I misheard it.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

True, but right now Mike O'Connell is taking the reigns. Gulp....

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

:(

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

um Go Ottawa!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

NO

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Death To Ottawa!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Red Sox

Get in line, Boston, it's all about the Cubs this year

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)
