What's the best thing about Autumn?

Question for those of us in the southern hemisphere.

i like the sweet chill in the air, the way the days get shorter, and how everything starts to turn that little bit silver at night-time. hahaha and don't lets start on what fungi start to sprout at this time of year.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

makes me feel younger for some reason - i feel like a 2nd year again ('94). the days get really good at about 3pm here in wgtn, for the reasons you've detailed above. the nippiness makes me feel like drinking and misbehaving in the city and reminds me of drug-taking fun and all the good coats and shoes i wore through the 90s. (things you can't get in the noughts)

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

girls get cuter because they are wearing sweaters and glasses and cords and hats and such. that's probably not the BEST thing, but it is one thing i like

ron (ron), Thursday, 20 March 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

all those clothing items make people cuter - esp cords & hats.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The elm leaves in Royal Parade.

The sure knowledge I've survived another Melbourne summer without going completely troppo.

Fred Nerk, Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I miss Canberra autumns - the firey red and orange leaves all over the place and people burning off piles of leaves... *sigh*.

Autumn is my fave month - my birthday's just been, the weather is sunny but mostly mild (this years been a weird exception in Melbourne), and you get to wear jeans and things again. Hurray!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:26 (twenty-three years ago)

People seem less stressed. Probably because they're starting to sleep properly again.

Fred Nerk, Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

school supplies!

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Forget getting to sleep; now daylight savings is done I can actually wake up. Oh, and I love the Oscar-bait movies.

B.Rad (Brad), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Angel Pool

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

New back to school wardrobe.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

you can be suicidal and happy at the same time. it is something to do with the way the light is slanting.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 20 March 2003 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

that's EXACTLY it, rainy. you've hit the proverbial nail...

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Thursday, 20 March 2003 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I must admit, I do love the warm Autumn colours.

ali (ali), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The light's wonderful for photographs, colour ones anyway. Also the weather's more varied/interesting. Also my birthday's during it. I have some other thing, something to do w/cats, but I'm too tired to work out what I mean. Cats are nice.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

my life will be forever autumn, 'cos you're not here... :-(

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Central Park South still smells like horse manure.

hstencil, Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

.... I blame hstencil.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

man I walked right into that one.

hstencil, Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

and I need to find someplace to wipe off my shoe.

hstencil, Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Autumn is the best time of year. Come July, I'll be counting down the days 'til October.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

apple-picking in northern illinois! thats always fun... parking next to the general store, then taking the hayride over to the orchard... golden delicious!

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The trees look more interesting without all those stupid leaves.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Write that novel, learn that guitar, ask them out, take a break, whatever you gotta do, do it!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Cooling breezes to sweep away the Summer's heat and humidity....not that I can remember what that was like!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and dancing in the nearest pumpkin patch in the middle of the night.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I love wearing light jackets and crunching through leaves.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

kentucky so beautiful in the fall. halloween is the perfect holiday, there is cider and my birthday. everything gets sharper and more in focus. autumn is the best time of year to drink bourbon in mass quanities, which has to be one of its best qualities.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Wardrobe options really open up for one here in the hot hot south.

And the word itself: Ought--Uhm. It's fun!

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's prime snuggling weather.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Cute jackets!
Corduroy pants!
The fall color scheme!

And there's just something in the air that excites me.

AND it's my birthday season (well, my birthday is Sept 6th and Autumn starts the 23rd but it was always Back to School time growing up and so I always thought of it being Fall...blah ti blah ti blah...).

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The way the cool breeze smells like falling-in-love. The way the leaves kinda turn all fiery-looking. The sunsets! Dead leaves and the dirty ground. Cider fo shizzle! Harvest season in all it's faces. Harvest moons! The way some songs feel so much more right (I'm looking at you Bjork!). Everyone is strangely friendlier & more melancholy at the same time, and people look at you & smile on the street. Sweaters, get out of the closet and onto me NOW! That strange electricity between people, like a love catalyst. Did I mention the sunsets?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

What can I add to this besides, yeah, me too!

I do wish there was real autumn in Southern Callifornia, though - I'm jonesin' for some pretty leaves.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's what I meant to say. :-)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"dead leaves and the dirty ground"
nickalicious, did you just channel the white stripes?
you are otm about some songs feeling more right. as i already posted on a my morning jacket thread, i think they are perfect fall music.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Possessed by the spirit of I can tell that we are gonna be friends!

I think MMJ are totally great for autumn. I think White Stripes are too!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)
