Laughter In The Dark

Late last night: in a world where value has been pulverized and the media are apologists for barbarism, the television offers a brief shard of suspense, diebelief, amazement and joy.

Valencia 2-1 Arsenal / Roma 1-1 Ajax: Arsenal finish third in group and go out of Europe - again.

Even on days and nights like these, this vestige of molten glee survives.

I know, it was great wasn't it? I've always rated John Carew. His father was one of Oslo's most famous gamblers, you know.

I used to want any English club to do well in Europe. I still would want any club to do well.. except Arsenal. I don't know where this antipathy has come from. It's odd.

Is it too much to expect that we're 2/3rds of the way through a mirror-image of that little, damaging run the Arse had back in November? Everton defeat - Euro defeat - Blackburn defeat...

It's about time Rooney scored...

I want any UK club to do well in Europe apart from Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool, Spurs, Celtic or Rangers.

But the better English clubs do, the more places available in the two competitions for English clubs - it's because of their success that 4th place is worth a Champions' League slot, which might fall to your club this year, Dr C.

I am hoping that English clubs do so well that lots more teams get in, as Bristol Rovers are still not quite in contention for European football.

What's this about Celtic winning 2-0? I thought Scottish clubs were supposed to be rubbish?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

But Celtic are secretly Irish! So they should be k-rubbish.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

The Irish immigration into Liverpool has obviously rotted their football.

I thought this thread was going to be about the Nabokov book. Boy, was I ever wrong.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 21 March 2003 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Start talking about Nabokov, and we'll try to keep up.

The club I most want to do badly is Real Madrid, the smug wankers.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 21 March 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Hala Real! Can't wait for them to hammer those humourless bastards Man U

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 21 March 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

humourless?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 March 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Please note: I didn't know the draw before embarking on my rant. I still stand by it though.
