Staying up too late? Reading and posting at work? Are you comfortable telling your boss you missed a deadline because of this board?

COLD FUSION, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

no. in fact it's probably good for my productivity

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not as much as the grain alcohol.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know... maybe I using the board as an excuse for true writer's block.

COLD FUSION, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe i using the board as an excuse for not having a job

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:08 (twenty-three years ago)

so if you were offered one, you'd turn it down on the basis that it'd affect your time with ILx?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

yes. as well as my time a. sleeping b. eating c. building a little fort

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:12 (twenty-three years ago)

well at least you'd still have time for anal sex

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

you'd think

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll be trying to argue its part of my performance at work (not the anal sex...that's fucking with my productivity)

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:54 (twenty-three years ago)

work?...o sorry, what was i supposed to do again?

erik, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Unfortunately, work seems to be affecting my performance on this board. This can't be right. I must endeavour to rectify the situation forthwith!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

if it weren't this, I'd be avoiding my work with something else, so yes and no

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. Next question?

No, really. It only affects my performance because I was taken aside and given a Talking To about how much time I was spending on it. Which took up far more time than the board ever takes. I use it to clean my mind out between invoices. When you're juggling vast strings of numbers all day, you need to do *something* to make your mind fresh. I find that ILX is the least intrusive way of doing this.

kate, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

the thing is, I'm not sure *I* would, which gives a measure of my fondness for ILX and the amount of work I have to do...

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. Better not expand. Stuff to do.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i took today off and spent almost no time here.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

took today off work. spent no time ILX.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

this is the entire point of the board for me. i only post at work, and only started posting cos i'd lurked for ages at a time when i was deeply disillusioned with my job.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Entertainment for bored office workers! Hooray!

Speaking of which, I'm going to get myself some coffee and get to work.

kate, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

v recently i remembered that ILX was like a lame idea i had when i was given web space back in the day. I had a page called "Company Time Magazine", which was a space for people to submit things they'd done on company time - even just postit doodles. nothing ever happened, but i liked the idea.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd find other ways to waste time without the internet.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

no.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

ah but DV, I don't know what work is like for you, but for me, well, I'm supposed to be looking at a screen and occasionally clicking a mouse and typing some stuff. All day, every day. So if I started reading something on a piece of paper or writing stuff down or (God forbid) walking to other parts of the building *then* I'd arouse the suspicions of the bosses! As I know from bitter experience....

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not working.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I am broke.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Positively and negatively; I think it works out to be positive overall because I steal good stories/trends/links/information that I can use at work. Plus there's the mind-clearing factor.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh except now it's affecting my ability to get to work on time so see you later.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a bit of an addiction at work. Don't have a PC at home so I only read ILM during work hours. Try to 'have a life' after 5 and on weekends but I'm straight back onto ILM on monday mornings.

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

If I had any work to do, maybe. But right now I don't so ilxor is saving me from being bored to death.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course its affecting my work, but it also helps me relax from the hell that can go around sometimes. And even bigger performance factor is my pay or lack of it or even the rumours of a return to full suit and tie.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I don't look at it during work hours, except during my lunch break.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes.

hstencil, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

No -- it's a matter of balance.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I spend most of the day looking at and typing into a computer. I get enough work done so that it looks like I'm doing my job. So when I'm not working it still looks like I am to the bosses.

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was last working (earlier this year), it didn't affect performance at all: match days were usually on weekends, so I'd check the boards in the days before. (Besides, libraries only gave you a certain amount of time.)

In the other positions I'd had, I was working in front of a comp anyway, so I'd just wait til lunch.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I've managed to strike an invigorating balance of "do-a-task, hop-to-boards, do-a-task, read-some-news, do-a-task, hop-to-boards" which is weird 'cause it manages to encourage me to get more stuff done were I to only work straight-through the day, while at the same time sorta tricking my inner-slacker into thinking I'm still just goofing off.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

*ahem*

"...to get more stuff done than if I were to only work..."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i've always been a lurker with occasional trolly attempts to join in or start something...i'm on probation at my job...maybe i need to post more stuff here...oops...they're watching me again yikes!

jamelucas, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

my system administrator at work blocked access to the site and so i can no longer read or post. he also blocked every other site i regularly go to. asshole. when i try it sends up a message saying my attempt to access has been recorded. damn nz government.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
not blocked here, yet.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

If I didn't have this board, I probably would have already quit. It relives tension.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck work.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

why would you want to relive tension? the new tension isn't good enough for you?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That is so high school.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Leave me alone you mean Mann!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly thought it was an interesting typo though, I mean, I'm a tension-addict. Really. You should see the ridiculous situations I'm always creating for myself.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I guess in the end playing on ILX all day does put me under more preasure at work. Oh, well.

Sarah Mclusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, like I'll sometimes find myself doing a day's worth of work in about an hour thanks to ILX.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe ILX is responsible for the shitty US economy? All that productivity lost?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You guys who only look at it at work, has anyone noticed that you get less work done on a Monday when you have to catch up with weekend ILX?

Nick H, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, and if I really can't pull away from work to catch up I feel REALLY out of the loop when I get back to ILX the next day.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

with the new job it's hard to keep up w/ ilx

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh i gotta be at work in 6 hours, and im still awake on ilx.....

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

now that I have a job it affects my performance by keeping me sane enough to stay productive

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes I waste a whole hour or two on my day off chasing threads and I finally snap out of it and go, "Aaaaaaahh! Stop! Stop!! You're not being paid to do this right now!!!"

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say definitely yes. I still get most of my work done, but not all. bits & pieces are left for another time when they are not very important. Sometimes this means that i get so behind that some weeks I have to start early & work late to try to catch up!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 14 August 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"...a repo man spends his life getting IN to tense situations..."

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 14 August 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

k¸ (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 11:11 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, man. Although it is quite cool to know that by posting here we can influence business and payments all over the world.

StanM, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

oh dear she's coming down herself, even though with financial system thingummy it won't be ready til friday. she's right, of course, but oh boy cmon ppl let's all be cool

k¸ (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

ey the public sector is always terrible with finance ime, she should have known to expect nothing but disaster. I'm sure that relatively speaking you're a viking at finance.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 12:05 (fifteen years ago)

maybe so wbut this lady is p much a valkyrie at ass-kicking

k¸ (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 12:07 (fifteen years ago)

also also, yeah we have monthly payments that have regularly been 'delayed' by up to 3 weeks this past few months.

our local authority is out of money, in other words.

k¸ (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 12:08 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....

this kinda came to a head, with the result that i'll not be posting from work anymore. matter of fact, i'll not be doing anything at work except work, and lots of it, and hopefully, y'know, they'll overlook my internet usage the past few years.

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

Oh shit, what happened?

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

too late, he's gone in a puff of productivity, pffft

capitalism claims another

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

ha no i was doing the dishes. i've never gotten away with skiving on ILX at home, unfortunately.

eh, just went through a team meeting going through targets and areas of responsibilities for the next while, asked to wait back, was asked if i was having problems in the job/role, was informed that there were serious concerns over my output and internet usage (which had been checked on request by IT), and informed that it would stop effective immediately.

which, tbh, was as fair as it could have gone from my POV.

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

He/she (?) and I had a bit of a disagreement one morning about the need for internet acronyms. Darraghmac said they were important because he/she was always posting at work. I guess in the end, even acronyms weren't enough.

clemenza, Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

Never had much doubt over dara's gender tbh. Tough break amigo - the addict's way fwd would be to disconnect the iPhone wifi and go with 3G reception, but you may not want encouraging.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

If I'm honest I left work happier today than I've done in a while. I've had months/years of aimless dossing and I guess I'm one of those that needs a kick up the arse every couple weeks. Gonna get in early tomorrow and get cracking.

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

when i worked at my old job i used to be on here constantly eventually leading them to add ILX to the list of banned sites, effectively ending my posting. Now 4 years later, im back.

thebingo2010 (chrisv2010), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

xpost -- The Irish economic situation explained -- you got distracted by this place, the country went to hell, you'll do some cleanup work this week and everything's better. (Surely.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

EXACTLY!

thebingo2010 (chrisv2010), Thursday, 21 October 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

there's at least three people to blame for the state of ireland 2010, ned, thankfully i'm not one of them

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 21 October 2010 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

funny, i was just thinking about how i never noticed you much and now your posts are everywhere. guess it was true.

jeff, Thursday, 21 October 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

At my last work a round-robin came round requesting feedback on browser performance or somesuch - emailed only to the top 10 web users as identified by IT. Think was bona fide, but did get a shock to learn central monitoring was not only possible but actual.

Thank fuck I hadn't yet discovered ILX - would guess I can get through a hundred times the traffic on a determined day on here.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 21 October 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

yeah jeff i went supernova on ilx the past two years, since i figured i was invincible at work, and spurs got kinda good again. i'll be receding slightly from now on i reckon.

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Thursday, 21 October 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

RIP dmac, harsh call sir

what is he like? the guy's a juggalo, man (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 21 October 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

yeah had considered just posting 'darraghmac out' and never posting again, but sure the evenings are long and the gf is away so we'll not get overdramatic about it just yet
