Does anybody here have a criminal record? Or does anybody hang around with a known recidivist?

Somehow I've been pulled-over-and-harassed at least 10 times yet without actually being arrested.

*knocking on wood*

Your offences against the law.

My record was cleared once I turned 18.

Not I, but in college I spent a few months working for a landscaping company. I was the only one besides the boss-foreman-guy who could drive the trucks since everyone else was on work release from prison. After we'd finished for the day we'd have to drive them back to their halfway house and watch to make sure they checked in. One day I asked one of the guys what he'd done.

"Auto theft," he said, without hesitation.

"What'd you take?"

"Big Red Car Go Vroom [I don't know anything about cars and can't remember what he really said]. I didn't take it though. This woman had let me borrow it. She said I could borrow it and bring it back in the afternoon but I was a little late and she just flipped out."

"Wow, how late?"

"Not hardly late at all, she just wigged. She was nuts."

"They could convict you for that though? Didn't you explain what happened?"

"Yeah, but there was some other stuff too. She had some guns in the trunk, and I guess forgot she'd put 'em there, and I had no idea, and when the cop pulled me over, I couldn't explain it, 'cause I didn't even know what they were or why they were there."

"What were they, like hunting rifles or something."

"No, automatics. There was a [he named one or two scary-sounding people-killing models], and a 9mm. Oh yeah, that one was in the glove compartment."

"You didn't know it was there?"

"No way, I had no idea."

This guy I worked a few temp jobs with was in prison for murder for about 20 years...he spent 5 of them in solitary confinement. 5 fucking years without talking to another soul! I was amazed that he left w/his sanity intact. He was a really nice guy, and said that he was framed (his buddy shot the dude, buddy runs away, he stays and tries to help victim, cops see him and only him there...he was on leave from the Marines and was wearing his uniform at the time, so you'd think that might do something for him, but his being black did nothing to help)

Stopped, cited, never arrested, never been to jail.

Arrested three times I'm afraid. Don't care to go into it but at least one of those was for a "good cause."

four months pass...
This weekend, my grandmother was up from Texas visiting us as she does once a year during the time of her Eastern Star convention. Anyway, she, my mom, my sister, and NA and I all went out to get ice cream. As we're sitting there stuffing our faces, she asks, "Sarah, have you ever heard of something called Gangsta rap?" We start laughing immediately. "It's not Gangster. It's spelled G-A-N-G-S-T-A...?" And she was looking at us so seriously and innocently and none of us could answer 'cuz we were laughing too hard.
Apparently, she saw it on one of her crosswords.

In other news, I learned on NPR this morning that 1 out of every 36 Americans spent some time in jail in 2001.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i got arrested this year for taking pictures of the anti-war protests. i got caught in a sweep, was handcuffed on a bus for 8hours and had to pee like a racehorse the whole time. i just went to court for it last week and it was dismissed.
