woah that brings back some memories - i used to love the barbapapa books, but i remember nothing of what it was all about

now if someone could post pics of that book series about the multicoloured bear things that would be cool

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I was thinking this was going to be a riff on "Barbarella".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

the barba-family was grreat
essential part of me childhood

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

You just reminded me I had a fluffy Barbapapa thingy when I was a kid. The Womble I remembered, but this had flown from memory long ago... (I have a horrible feeling a v. filthy and battered version lies up in the attic. But I won't be looking.)

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Aww, I used to love them

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

why do i not remember this?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 27 March 2003 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was Dutch, not French. Bound to be something on google...

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

oh well I stand corrected. There's a Barbalala; definitely a precursor of the Teletubbies!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, almost forgot...

four months pass...
Best programme ever, apart from Homicide: LOTS. Is it going to become available on DVD, like Dogtanian, I wonder?

gobemouche, Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Gobemouche I was contemplating the Dogtanian DVD yesterday - is it a worthwhile purchase or would buying it be the act of a sadcase?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, it was a TV thing? This makes a whole lot more sense. I have a bunch of the books procured from a Corso op-shop for friends' kids to play with, and found them kinda disturbing. They go down well with the under-5s, though. Especially the one where they find a derelict boat and turn into its respective parts to sail back to shore.

petra jane (petra jane), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea what this is. Now Dogtanian on the other hand...'one for all & all for one, muskahounds(not sure about this word??) are always ready...'

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dogtanian DVD is an essential purchase and not sad in the least. It's enjoyable in a totally non-ironic way. Great characters, classic story, a joyful series.

Volume 1 has nine episodes, from the opener in Dogtanian's village ("Dogtanian's Journey") to episode 9 ("Juliette Kidnapped"). And Volume 2 is out on Monday!

Holy cow - Willy Fog is out on DVD too (sadly not as good as Dogtanian). Warning: contains Transfer and Tico the mouse.

gobemouche, Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes I saw the W Fog DVD too - only 5 episodes though as compared to 9 for Dogtanian at the same price.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think i could stand to watch Dogtanian again. it bugged the hell out of me as a kid (yet i still watched it so must've been some appeal)

i would probably buy a Cities Of Gold DVD tho - maybe even Belle & Sebastian?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a Cities Of Gold one too I think.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

barbapapa was incredible. i thought it was juts books. thats what i had. ned brought all the memories back when he posted a picture of this in that thread with 'bitches!' in the title.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe that Cities of Gold is available on DVD in French only - i.e. Les Mystérieuses cités d’or. There are also three volumes of Barbapapa in French. Francophiles should check out Amazon.fr.

gobemouche, Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to see Cities of Gold, if only to find out what the fuss was all about. I'm not sure why I didn't see it as many of my (near) contemporaries rave about it.

was it on ITV?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd advise those of you on a children's nostalgia tip to join your local libraries or video shops rather than shell out for what was, after all, badly animated 80s rubbish with an endearing plot.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Cities Of Gold was actually rubbish, but you accepted this because the idea of melding Aztec mythology with Jules Verne-esque sci-fi scenarios blew my tiny eight year old mind
